Heat overhauls roster as ABL season loomsBy Harry Hodge The Saigon Heat holds a press conference in HCMC on Monday to announce their roster for the new ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) season - PHOTO: COURTESY OF SAIGON HEAT HCMC - “Out with the old, in with the new.” This phrase couldn’t be more appropriate for Saigon Heat fans. With the Vietnamese squad entering its seventh ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) season, Canadian bench boss Kyle Julius has completely turned over his roster from last year’s 10-10 squad. Gone are fan favorites like Vietnamese-American David Arnold, the face of the franchise since its third season, as well as Vietnamese-Swedish star Stefan Nguyen, who’s plyed his trade in the Vietnam Basketball Association (VBA) in Hanoi and Danang the last two seasons. With the league revamping its rules on import players and what constitutes a “heritage” player, with ties to the country they play in through family lineage, a … [Read more...] about Heat overhauls roster as ABL season looms
Spain's defender Marcos Alonso (left) jumped for the ball with England's defender Ben Chilwell (centre) and England's defender Kieran Trippier during the UEFA Nations League football match. (CRISTINA QUICLER/AFP) Raheem Sterling scored twice as England delivered one of their finest victories of the modern era by beating Spain 3-2 in Seville on Monday (Oct 15). Away from home, and against a Spanish side in scintillating form under their new coach Luis Enrique, this was certainly England's best win under Gareth Southgate and, perhaps, their most impressive since thrashing Germany 5-1 in Munich in 2001. Marcus Rashford was the other scorer in a breathless opening 45 minutes here, which witnessed Spain conceding three on home soil for the first time in their history. "To play the way they did, this should be a great reference point for this team for the future," Southgate said. Paco Alcacer, on as a substitute, headed in before the hour to spark hopes of a comeback but England were home … [Read more...] about Sterling shines as England beat Spain in Nations League
Viet Nam News By Paul Kennedy I’ve an old mate back in England, goes by the name of Russell Beale. Nice lad, smart, good laugh and about to become a father for the first time. He lives in a small town called Stroud in the South West of England but reading his Facebook page this past week or so and you would be forgiven for thinking he’s from another planet. Russell genuinely believes England will win the World Cup. His profile picture is decked out with patriotic colours and his posts and updates read like a motivational speaker employed to lift the entire nation. Before the Panama game, Russell predicted England would win 10-0. He wasn’t far off. I laughed at first at this ridiculous idea that my home nation actually stands a hope in Hell, but after giving it a little more thought I started to come around to his way of thinking. England’s squad for the World Cup is a young team of solid individuals who have … [Read more...] about Can England really win the World Cup?
England ended a 22-year win drought against the Netherlands thanks to Jesse Lingard's strike for a 1-0 triumph after a performance of composure and quality in a friendly on Friday. Jesse Lingard celebrates with Kieran Trippier. (Photo: AFP/Emmanuel Dunand) Gareth Southgate's World Cup-bound England side were superior for much of the match, organised and in control even before Manchester United midfielder Lingard's 59th minute goal secured their first win over the Dutch since Euro '96. The Netherlands, still smarting from missing out on this year's finals in Russia after a second straight failure to qualify for a major championship, were left with little to cheer at the start of reconstruction under new manager Ronald Koeman. The home side got lucky soon after halftime when a clear foul on Marcus Rashford in the penalty area was waved away. But the visitors were soon rewarded for their control and some neat passing movements when a loose ball fell to Lingard, who swept it home … [Read more...] about Impressive England break Dutch drought with 1 0 win
