Revised rice export target still hard to obtain Trung Chanh CAN THO – The 5.4-million-ton rice export target for this year is tough to achieve even though it has been revised down. Le Minh Truong, deputy general director of Vietnam Southern Food Corporation (Vinafood 2), said the Government originally aimed for total rice export of 6.5 million tons via formal channels this year, which matched the goal of the Vietnam Food Association (VFA). However, the VFA brought the target down to 5.4 million tons, Truong said on October 5 at a review conference on the autumn-winter crop and preparations for the winter-spring crop of 2016-2017 in the south in the Mekong Delta of Hau Giang. “But VFA said at its recent meeting that local exporters may fail to ship abroad 5.4 million tons this year,” Truong said. There were many reasons for the rice export forecast cut, including the lack of a strong national rice brand, low quality and high production costs. But the proportion slid to 53% last year and 47% in the first half of this year. A Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development report showed that Vietnam shipped abroad US$2.6 billion worth of more than 6.2 million tons of rice in January-November. China made up 34% of the total volume though it is still the biggest importer of Vietnamese rice in the period.
