Hanoi – Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi has been awarded a five-star rating – the top level of recognition from Forbes Travel Guide in its independent assessment of luxury hotels, restaurants and spas.

This is the second consecutive year Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi has had its name in the rankings.

In Forbes Travel Guide’s review for 2021, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi was praised as “a supremely beautiful hotel, inside and out”.

Every corner is a compelling photo opportunity, especially in the gleaming historic wing and all-white inner courtyard, the review said.

According to the review, Metropole Hanoi has a strong sense of pride in its Vietnamese heritage. Its staff dons an eye-catching array of ao dai costumes, walls glow with local art and ceramics, and detailed explanations of Vietnamese culture are sprinkled throughout the luxury hotel.

Situated at 15 Ngo Quyen street in Hanoi since its opening in 1901, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi draws deeply from a century of stories to weave a rich, nostalgic guest experience in the heart of the Vietnamese capital.

Over the years, Metropole Hanoi has checked in many an illustrious character, including novelist Graham Greene, writer Somerset Maugham and movie star Charlie Chaplin.

Forbes Travel Guide, established in 1958, is the oldest travel guide in the US, and is the creator of the original Five-Star rating system for hotels. The guide’s ratings are among the most highly respected in the hotel industry.

Its five-star rating is meant to designate “outstanding, often iconic properties with virtually flawless service and amazing facilities”.

Teenager Quang moves towards SEA Games glory, one step at a time

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam have never won a gold medal in the men’s walking event at the regional Southeast Asian (SEA) Games despite having previously qualified for the Olympics in the sport.

Phùng Kim Quang is on a mission to change that.

Walking was little more than a blip on the Vietnamese sporting radar until siblings Nguyễn Thị Thanh Phúc and Nguyễn Thành Ngưng pocketed gold and bronze in the women’s and men’s races at the 25th Games in 2011.

Since then, with better support, Việt Nam have dominated the women’s discipline with four titles. However, the men’s crown is still out of the reach despite three silver medals.

Teenager Quang is the big Vietnamese hope in the sport after recording some outstanding performances at recent domestic competitions.

He is the record holder of the junior tournament and in the top three of the national championship.

Fate

Quang was born in Ba Vì District, in the outskirts of Hà Nội, in 2003.

The naughty little boy loved and played well in all sports such as badminton, shuttlecock, football and track-and-field. After dominating school competitions he became a member of the district athletics team.

Two years later, Quang was among several boys introduced to the walking event, a new sport in the city in 2015. His coach Nguyễn Văn Toản did not pick him at first but when the team did not have enough athletes, Quang was recruited after a second trial.

But Toản, who coached Phạm Thị Thu Trang to the SEA Games women’s title in 2019, gradually found the thin boy was suitable for the sport in which posture is of prime importance while arm, shoulder and leg actions must be well controlled to ensure balance.

After four years in the sport, Quang grabbed his first gold at the National Youth Athletics Championship and a bronze in the National Athletics Championship in 2019.

A year later, the 17-year-old defended his title at the junior 5,000m event and set a new record of 23min 14.21sec, 11 seconds than the old record of 23:14.32 by Dương Hữu Tín of Nghệ An Province in 2013.

“It is a record but I was not very happy. I expected to walk under 22 minutes but the result was more than 23 minutes. I considered it a failure because I could not do it again as I am overage next year,” Quang told Việt Nam News .

A month later he finished third with a time of 1:37:03 at the National Athletics Championship’s 20km walk.

Despite his strong effort, Quang who suffered a leg injury, could not surpass senior athletes Nguyễn Thành Ngưng and Võ Xuân Vĩnh at the finish line.

“I was really nervous when competing against such experienced rivals although it was my second time. Ngưng and Vĩnh are my seniors and idols. They have won national and international medals,” said Quang.

“However, I have learnt many things from them. From what they knew, they told me how to get better. Ngưng used to tell me ‘effort does not make success immediately, but if you try hard you will make it’. I have pinned it in my mind and will work harder to get better. I will find success by the end of the road,” he said.

Despite the third-place finish, Quang has been tipped for a big future.

“We will invest in Quang with an expectation that he will bring home regional and continental victories and even further he could reach world level if possible,” said Lại Phúc Lộc, deputy director of the Hà Nội Sports and Training Centre.

“We have set plans to send athletes including Quang to compete in open events in Thailand and Singapore (when the COVID-19 pandemic is controlled). Our goal is that Quang will secure a berth in the national team and have a high result in the coming SEA Games,” he added.

It is a huge job for Quang to vie for the national team slot against tough opponents. Ngưng has won the national title for 11 years in a row along with a SEA Games bronze and became the first and only Southeast Asian walker to win an Olympic berth in 2016. The Đà Nẵng-based athlete has vowed not to retire until he wins a SEA Games gold.

Vĩnh is also a big challenge he has finished behind Ngưng many times. He has even outperformed Ngưng in the SEA Games with three silvers in 2013, 2015 and 2019.

The only thing that Quang has on his side is his youth. He will be 18 while Ngưng 29 and Vĩnh 30 at the coming Games.

“My current result does not push me to the national senior team. But it will be my target now. I will have to improve my strength and technique. I also have to decrease my time because I want not only to be part of the coming big tournament but also win a medal,” Quang said. VNS

Coach Park worries about weather condition at World Cup qualifiers

March 3, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, group G teams competing in World Cup Asian qualifiers will play their final matches at a centralized venue. United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Thailand are both candidates to host the remaining matches, with a high chance Asian Football Confederation would choose the former, which can fulfill all requirements pertaining to stadiums, training locations, accommodation as well as Covid-19 prevention measures.

At a meeting with assistant coaches on Wednesday, Park said: “We must prepare right away. First we must analyze our opponents Indonesia, Malaysia and UAE. Second, we mush research weather conditions in UAE. I will ask Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) to select a training location with similar weather as UAE.”

In summer, the weather in UAE is known to be very hot and humid. Playing football under such conditions could drain player stamina at a fast rate.

The national team is expected to gather for training in May. They will play Indonesia on June 7, before clashing with Malaysia on the 11th and UAE on the 15th.

Vietnam is topping group G with 11 points in five unbeaten games. The Golden Dragons need at least seven points in their last three games to secure a place in the next qualification round.

Coach Park Hang Seo: Vietnam needs 6 points to move forward

March 3, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

Coach Park Hang Seo has set a goal for the Vietnam national football squad: to win at least six points in the remaining three matches of Group G, the second qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup in Asia.

HLV Park Hang Seo: 'Tuyển Việt Nam cần 6 điểm để đi tiếp'

“The goal is so that we can get a card to the final round of the 2022 World Cup in Asia,” said the head coach.

Currently, after five matches, the Vietnamese team has 11 points, ranking first in Group G. It is likely that the Korean coach and his players are aiming to defeat Indonesia and Malaysia.

Of these two rivals, if Indonesia has been eliminated, Malaysia will no longer have the home advantage because the remaining matches of Group G will be held in one place, perhaps in the United Arab Emirates or Thailand.

According to the schedule announced earlier by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the Vietnamese team will face Indonesia on June 7, Malaysia on June 11 and the United Arab Emirates on June 15.

“In 2021, the Vietnamese football team will play in some important tournaments and they are great challenges. Our success is in the past, but now the team must look to the future,” the coach said.

“This is a busy year, so we will have to allocate strength in major tournaments such as the World Cup qualifiers, the Asian U23 qualifiers, the SEA Games and AFF Cup,” he added.

The Korean coach admitted that he and his team would do their best to fulfill the goals.

Regarding the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Asia, if the United Arab Emirates is chosen as the host, Vietnam and three other Southeast Asian teams in the group will have to play in extreme weather conditions. Their matches will take place in June, the peak of the summer heatwave in the Middle East. In 2020, there were days when the temperature there reached 43 degrees Celsius.

In another development, the Vietnamese team will not have to be isolated when they arrive at the place where the remaining three matches of the second qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup will be held. However, the players will be regularly tested for Covid-19 before and during the tournament.

Vietnam stock market watchdog to provide support for businesses

March 11, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – The head of Vietnam’s stock market watchdog urged players to trust the internal strengths of the economy and the resilience of Vietnam’s stock market.

The State Securities Commission of Vietnam (SSC), the country’s stock market watchdog, is considering a number of solutions to help investors and securities firms overcome negative impacts of the Covid-19 epidemic and global turmoil, according to the SSC’s Chairman Tran Van Dung.

Chairman of the SSC Tran Van Dung.

Among them are lowering fees for some brokerage services and easing regulations on margin trading, Dung told Vietnam Financial Times.

At the close on March 9, the benchmark Vn-Index plunged 6.28% to 835.49, the biggest tumble since May 2014 when the standoff between Vietnam and China occurred after China moved an oil rig into Vietnam’s waters.

Dung, however, noted the liquidity of the Hochiminh and Hanoi stock exchanges remained abudant with nearly VND6.5 trillion (US$278.69 million) traded, indicating investors were buying in battered stocks.

Besides, foreign investors remained net sellers but at a moderate amount of VND230 billion (US$9.85 million) on March 9, Dung added.

Dung said the freefall of the stock market was a common situation globally, especially as “all bad news came at one time” that directly impact investor sentiment, including the sharpest decline of oil price since 1991, prompting Goldman Sachs to predict Brent oil could drop to US$20 per barrel this year.

On early March 9, the Japanese government issued lower-than-expected economic data for 2019, heightening fears the global economy may come to a recession under the growing impacts of the Covid-19 epidemic.

The Federal Reserves (FED) on March 3 cut interest rates by 0.5% in an emergency move, prompting 65% of traders to expect the FED to continue lowering interest rates by 0.75% in the upcoming meeting on March 17. If it happens, the cut in the federal funds rate would take the borrowing cost in the short-term markets down to a range of 0.25% – 0.5% and raise concern over the US and global economies going to slow down.

For the Vietnamese stock market, new cases of Covid-19 infections were the main reason for shares going downhill, Dung said. However, Vietnam’s successful containment of the epidemic is just a matter of time, given strong determination of the government and the public.

Moreover, in the mid- and long-term, credit and fiscal support packages from the government will no doubt help enterprises recover, Dung added.

Dung urged enterprises, intermediary financial institutions and investors to trust the internal strengths of the economy and the resilience of Vietnam’s stock market.

Such confidence would help the market to rebound sooner and avoid unnecessary sell-offs, Dung stated.

In the coming time, the SSC would continue to closely monitor the market and only intervene out of necessity, Dung added, stating the authority would strictly punish cases of market manipulation or providing false information for unfair gains.

Accountability sought in e-commerce

A draft decree amending 2013’s Decree No.52/2013/ND-CP on e-commerce, which will see comments collected from businesses and consultant firms, has recently caused concern for e-commerce operators if the draft is adopted.

Nguyen Chi Linh, representative of an e-commerce platform which is a subsidiary of the Chinese tech giant Alibaba Group, noted her criticisms to VIR about an adjusted article which orders a searching tool for state authorities to manage all information of their traders to check and inspect any violations or complaints.

“This regulation is unnecessary and can seriously impact the convenience of traders. Even if traders do not violate or make any complaints, they don’t want private information to be monitored by state management agencies. They could jump to other social platforms, and hamper e-commerce development,” said Linh.

She added that the platforms are assisting state management agencies in investigating illegal business acts, saying that providing registration information, transaction histories, and other documents on the issue on the e-commerce trading platform should be enough.

In addition, new regulations related to joint responsibility on goods and services on the platforms has caused headaches for e-commerce operators. The draft decree has added responsibilities in Article 36.11.d, and the representative of the Chinese e-commerce platform said this is impossible for them, which plays a commercial intermediary role only.

Without a legal framework, the role and responsibilities of e-commerce platforms continue to be highlighted. At the end of 2019, sneaker and sports apparel giant Nike ditched its deal with Amazon after two years, after noting its concerns about third-party sellers offering counterfeit products on the marketplace. Many brands are unhappy with how Amazon operates, with fake goods running rampant.

According to Bloomberg, the e-commerce giant is also notorious for identifying popular products sold by third parties on its website and then selling its own similar products at lower prices.

In Vietnam, e-commerce platforms like Shopee and Sendo are used to inspections for massive violations and complaints related to bad service or fake and prohibited goods.

Nguyen Minh Long, director of Dragon Law Company, said that e-commerce platforms should not shirk their duty to provide a management tool for state authorities, and take the joint responsibilities to improve themselves.

“In order to enhance the efficiency of these regulations, we need some sanctions strong enough to ensure owners of e-commerce platforms improve accountability and compliance, ensure good performance of online trading, and protect local consumers,” said Long.

He agreed with new provisions, saying, “In the context that online trading is increasingly developing, especially during the pandemic, strengthening the state management for the sustainable development of the retail market is necessary to maintain both benefit of businesses and consumer protection, and avoid e-commerce platforms developing as a place for trading illegal goods,” explained Long.

The draft decree amending 2013’s Decree No.52/2013/ND-CP on e-commerce is being compiled by the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The draft adds provisions on managing e-commerce activities involving foreign factors, and those on social networks. It also revises several regulations on the responsibility of both e-commerce platforms and their operators.

Some popular e-commerce platforms in Vietnam are backed by Chinese technology giants, or funded by regional venture funds. However, results often fail to match investment, and competitiveness increasing. In 2020, Lazada.vn fell behind Shopee and Tiki, according to Malaysian shopping aggregator iPrice Group, with a sharp month-by-month drop of its traffic, while that of the leading player Shopee has tripled Lazada and Tiki.
