Authorities of Phu Quoc island district, the southern province of Kien Giang, plan to employ a wide range of measures to invite more domestic and foreign investors into the locality this year. Located on the Vietnam-Cambodia-Thailand marine economic corridor, Phu Quoc district covers more than 593sq.km with a population of over 100,000. It comprises 27 islands with Phu Quoc being the largest and dubbed the Pearl Island. Local administration is making the best use of special mechanisms and policies given by the Government along with stepping up investment promotion programmes and tackling administrative and infrastructural difficulties. The district is overhauling detailed development plans for functional areas and putting into use critical infrastructural facilities. The Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved adjustments to the general plan through 2030 for the development of Phu Quoc island district in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang. Under the modified plan, the tourism, service and entertainment complex, including casinos, will be moved from Da Chong beach in Bai Thom commune, to Bai Dai beach in Ganh Dau commune. The new plan also adds a cable car line from An Thoi town to Hon Thom Island in Hon Thom commune and a tourism and entertainment area together with a golf course across 2,090 hectares at Dong Cay Sao and the area to the north of Cuu Can River in Cua Can commune. In addition, 142ha of agricultural land to the north of Vung Bau canal will be turned in to a resort and sports area while the originally-planned golf course at the Cua Can area will be converted into an eco-tourism area. How gross economic pursuits are plundering one of Vietnam’s most precious resources. Last month, visitors to the Mango Bay Resort on Phu Quoc Island lounged on a pristine beach dotted with tropical plants. Rivulets of fresh water carried the previous night’s rain into the sea from a lush hillside dotted with airy cabins built without televisions or air-conditioners. In the waves below, rice sacks, plastic bags and crisp packets bobbed up and down while Mango Bay’s ground crew patrolled the sand. An employee at the eco-resort attributed the detritus to recent storms, a new riverfront market and tour boats that periodically anchor off shore and dump their garbage overboard. “All of the trash is from Vietnam,” he said, adding that on bad days, the entire staff drop what they’re doing to comb the shore. VietNamNet Bridge - A recent report by Cushman & Wakefield says that Vietnam’s largest island of Phu Quoc (Kien Giang province) and the central city of Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa province) will be the top choices of foreign investors, as they are expected to be tourist paradises of Vietnam in the near future. According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Kien Giang, the province now has 243 tourism projects, including up to 189 projects in Phu Quoc, with a total area of 6,804 hectares. In 2014, two big projects in Phu Quoc were put into operation, the 5-star Vinpearl Phu Quoc Resort & Spa and Salinda Premium Resort & Spa.
