Vietnam backs U.N.’s efforts to improve road traffic safety
The session adopted the “Political declaration of the high-level meeting on improving global road safety,” with the 193-member General Assembly committed to drive the implementation of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030, including the goal to half road traffic deaths in the next eight years. Speaking at the event, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Tra, Charge d'affaires a.i. of Vietnam to the U.N., affirmed that Vietnam totally supports the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021-2030. For the realisation of its goal, she said it is necessary to strengthen road safety legislation at global, regional and national levels to address current and emerging challenges. In addition, more investment is needed in developing infrastructure and road safety capacity in low- and middle-income countries, where 90% of traffic accidents are reported. Tra also emphasized the need to build a culture of traffic safety through education and awareness of obeying traffic laws such … [Read more...] about Vietnam backs U.N.’s efforts to improve road traffic safety
Thousands of Vietnamese flights delayed in June
The figure was up 15.9 percent year-on-year and up 9.4 percent from last month, according to a report from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam. The delay fights accounted for 18.2 percent of total flights operated by the country's six carriers last month, it said. Low-cost carrier Vietjet Air has the industry's highest rate of flight delays at 24 percent, followed by Vietnam Airlines (20.1 percent). CAAV said late-arriving aircraft was the main cause of delays in addition to other excuses like poor management and bad weather. The Ministry of Transport said the increase in flight delays has triggered public outcry among passengers and damaged the industry's reputation. It ordered airlines to ensure flights are punctual, especially during the peak summer travel season. In the first half of this year, the number of passengers going through Vietnam's airports reached 43.35 million, a pickup of 65.5 percent from a year ago and equivalent to 76 percent of pre-pandemic levels, … [Read more...] about Thousands of Vietnamese flights delayed in June

Illustration. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s economic growth accelerated faster than expected in the second quarter of this year, as a recovery in exports and manufacturing helped offset risks from coronavirus outbreaks and rising oil prices, Bloomberg reported. The US-based news agency cited data from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) saying the Vietnamese economy expanded 7.72% year-on-year in the April-June period, compared to 5.05% of the previous quarter. That was quicker than the median estimate for a 5.9% gain in a Bloomberg survey, and the highest level since at least the first quarter of 2013, it said. The performance helped lift growth in the first-half to 6.42% from a year ago, beating the GSO’s forecast for a 5.5% pace. The government targets full-year growth at 6%-6.5%. The gains in momentum coincide with Vietnam emerging as one of the alternative destinations for foreign investment amid trade disruptions from China’s lockdowns, … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s economic growth accelerates on back of exports, manufacturing: Bloomberg
