Malaysia to stop building coal plants from 2040

Ilustrative image (Photo: Malakoff Cooperation) Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - The Malaysian government will stop building coal power plants starting in 2040, and shift its focus toward clean and renewable energy , according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s department in charge of economy Mustapa Mohamed. Speaking at a question and answer session of the Malaysian Parliament’s second meeting, Mustapa said the ongoing global energy crisis will accelerate the transition to cleaner energy, adding that Malaysia will improve its renewable energy capacity to fulfill the set targets. A number of renewable energy sources identified for development include hydroelectricity, solar energy, biogas and biomass, he said, noting that battery energy storage technology will also be introduced to ensure quality and guaranteed power supply. PM receives outgoing British ambassador

The PM commended the ambassador’s active contributions to promoting the Vietnam-U.K. strategic partnership in all fields, diplomatic channels and people-to-people exchange. Mentioning the U.K.-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKFTA), Chinh said the deal has played a role in forging the bilateral economic and trade ties, with two-way trade standing at nearly 6.6 billion USD last year, up 17.2% year-on-year. Vietnam always attaches importance to its relations with the U.K., he affirmed, suggesting the two sides step up the exchange of delegations at all levels, particularly the high level, and organize diverse activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the bilateral diplomatic ties in 2023. The two sides should closely coordinate to optimise commitments of the UKFTA in order to enhance the economic, trade and investment relations, he continued. Malaysia, EU hold 8th Senior Officials’ Meeting

Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia and the EU held the 8th Senior Officials' Meeting at the premises of the EU delegation in Kuala Lumpur on August 1. The meeting covered a broad range of issues of mutual interest. They welcomed the upcoming EU-ASEAN Summit as an opportunity to enhance, besides the regional, the bilateral EU-Malaysia relations as well. The sides agreed to step up cooperation notably in the areas of trade and investment, security, human rights, economy, climate change, environment and forests, energy security and renewable energy and sustainable supply chains. They also welcomed the progress towards the signing of the Malaysia-EU Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA), aiming to sign the agreement within the framework of the EU-ASEAN Summit in December in Brussels. Foreign Minister holds bilateral meetings on AMM-55 sidelines

At their meeting, FM Son and his New Zealand counterpart Nanaia Mahuta agreed on the need to increase delegation exchanges and the promotion of annual mechanisms, striving for 20% growth in annual two-way trade to match the bilateral Strategic Partnership. Environment sector asked to harmonize economic development-environmental protection relations

Addressing a plenary session of the 10th National Environment Conference in Hanoi which drew 600 delegates, Thanh pointed to great challenges in the current environmental protection, including severe environmental pollution in many places and the degradation of biodiversity. He asked the environment sector to continue diversifying resources for environmental protection activities, while paying more attention to the environmental factor in the value structure of goods and services, strengthening the law enforcement in environmental activities, and increasing the use of mechanisms, tools and State management measures for environmental protection.
