Parts of China’s Hainan extend Covid lockdown, Lhasa in Tibet tightens curbs
Under the "dynamic Covid zero" policy that aims at quickly stopping each outbreak from spreading, local governments have imposed shorter lockdowns where people were barred from unnecessary movements for a few days or weeks until clusters were contained within narrower areas. Such lockdowns were less painful than the two-month virus battle fought by Shanghai in the spring, but the growing spread of Omicron across China may lead to more cities made subject to such measures along with the potential disruption to local businesses. In the southern province of Hainan, currently the worst-hit Chinese region, two cities, Dongfang and Chengmai, with a total population of around 900,000, said on Friday they would add days to the lockdowns on their residents, prolonging what were previously scheduled for three to four days to around a week. Hainan's provincial capital Haikou on Friday put its 2.9 million population in a lockdown between 0700-1800 local time, following similar restrictions … [Read more...] about Parts of China’s Hainan extend Covid lockdown, Lhasa in Tibet tightens curbs
Whales put on a show off lesser-known beach in central Vietnam
Vung Boi - De Gi, an unspoiled destination in Phu Cat District around 40 km from Quy Nhon Town, has become the center of attention after some of the giant creatures were spotted off the beach earlier this month. The beach is famous for its clear, blue waters. Lensman Nguyen Phan Dung Nhan of Quy Nhon said he and his friends hired a boat to reach the area where the whales are. Diving expert and local tour guide Tommy Toan said that he spotted the whales a month ago. Initially he saw eight whales but now there are only two left, a male and a female. Toan said he first encountered the whales on July 26 when he was taking tourists to Hon Trau Islet, about 8 kilometers from the shore. According to folklore, whales are auspicious creatures because fishermen have a good harvest when they appear. The two remaining animals are estimated to be … [Read more...] about Whales put on a show off lesser-known beach in central Vietnam
