Vietnamese teenagers poison classmate with unknown liquid purchased online

March 25, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

A tenth grader in Can Tho City in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region was hospitalized this week after five of his classmates forced him to drink an unknown liquid which they had purchased online.

School administrators first became aware of the issues when T.H.L., a 16-year-old student at An Khanh High School in Ninh Kieu District in Can Tho, vomited in his classroom on Monday afternoon, according to the municipal Department of Education and Training.

His teacher immediately sent him to the school clinic where it was decided he needed to be rushed to the Can Tho Central General Hospital for emergency treatment.

The education department reported that a group of L.’s classmates had forced him to drink an unknown liquid that they had bought online during break time.

The group said they did not know what the liquid was.

All five of the students involved have been suspended while the school continues to work with Ninh Kieu District police to investigate the matter.

According to police officers and Can Tho Central General Hospital, all the five, as well as L., have tested negative for drugs.

L. is currently in stable health and is being monitored at the hospital’s gastrointestinal department.

An initial diagnosis declared that L. had suffered from unknown toxicity.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.

A necessary step back: Masan chairman defends VinMart purchase

March 31, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

The decision to purchase Vingroup’s subsidiary VinCommerce, which operates the VinMart grocery chain, had been met with opposition, even from investors who had trusted most in Masan, he said.

Quang acknowledged in the 2020 annual report released recently that investors had the right to be concerned as Masan acquired a loss of over $100 million via VinCommerce. The group also lacks first-hand experience in the retail business, he added.

However, the acquisition, announced January last year , is part of a plan to build a strong foundation for the future when modern retail companies will dominate and make substantial profits, he said.

The group has shut down over 700 underperforming VinMart+ stores and restructured the business with a focus on meeting customers’ demand, a move that helped VinCommerce break even at the end of last year.

Masan, which now operates over 2,300 VinMart outlets nationwide, is planning to build a retail ecosystem that can reach 30-50 million consumers in the next five years with a total of 30,000 stores.

Its retail business could earn revenues of $7-10 billion a year with double-digit profit growth attained by 2025.

The group’s final goal is to create a “one-stop shop” platform to meet all customers’ demand in finance, education, entertainment and healthcare, with both online and offline channels.

Masan, which also has interests in mining, food and meat production, is hoping to double its post-tax profits to VND2.5 trillion ($108.3 million) this year.

Vietnam grants $53 mln to purchase Covid-19 vaccines for mass inoculation

April 2, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

The Health Ministry has been assigned to use the money to buy Covid-19 vaccines in an efficient and economical way.

The move came as the Southeast Asian country aims to secure around 150 million vaccine doses to cover 70 percent of its population by 2022.

Vietnam received 811,200 doses of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine on Thursday, its first batch of vaccines under the global Covax scheme.

Vietnam’s vaccination campaign began on March 8 after a batch of 117,600 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine were delivered in February. So far, over 51,000 Vietnamese, mainly frontline workers in the Covid-19 fight, have received their first Covid-19 vaccine shots.

The country is looking to diversify its procurement from more sources in Russia, the U.S. and China.

So far, Vietnam approved AstraZeneca’s ChAdOx1 vaccine and Russia’s Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use.

Vietnam ordered 30 million Covid-19 vaccine doses developed by British-Swedish company AstraZeneca in collaboration with Oxford University. However, its price details have not been revealed.

The country has also received contributions from several businesses to its fund for Covid-19 vaccine purchase.

Vietnam adds US$54 million to Covid-19 vaccine purchase

April 2, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The funding for Covid-19 vaccines comes from the state budget and other sources.

The government has decided an amount of VND1.24 trillion (US$54 million) for the purchase of Covid-19 vaccines.

The money, which is sourced from the central budget reserve 2021, will also be used for the vaccination, which began in early March.

So far, some 50,000 people in frontline forces have been vaccinated in the country of nearly 100 million people.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) is responsible for the purchase and universal immunization in 2021 with the government’s initial plan of buying 150 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines.

Vietnam expected to get the delivery of 60 million doses in 2021, coming from British-Swedish AstraZeneca and COVAX Facility, the Covid-19 vaccine sharing scheme.

On March 23, Vietnam licensed Russia’s Sputnik V for the inoculation.

As the global supply is deficient, Vietnam is mobilizing different stakeholders for the import of vaccines.

The country is currently negotiating with Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and Gamaleya for the purchase of vaccines.
