Ho Chi Minh City will organize meetings with the public to listen to their opinions before the city People's Council meeting in December, council Chairwoman Pham Phuong Thao said Thursday. City officials will hear about residents' satisfaction with a host of public services including health care, public notarization, garbage collection and education. The council will then discuss the issues with relevant agencies, Thao said. City officials say too many meetings are keeping them from the people's work. Le Minh Hue's busy meeting schedule means he can only be found in his office from 7 till 8 a.m. Being responsible for the district's urban planning and zoning-related issues, the Deputy Chairman of Binh Chanh District's weekly schedule has always been tight: sometimes four meetings a day, two during the morning and two in the afternoon. Hue said the meetings are eating away at his day, to the detriment of hundreds of residents who need their applications processed for home ownership certificates and complaints related to the district's zoning plans. Nguyen Trung Thong, deputy director of the city's public administration reform program, said too many of the meetings are superfluous, orchestrated by officials reciting lengthy reports and announcements. Local authorities in central Da Nang City Friday held an open public meeting with nearly 2,000 citizens, a record turnout for a forum between authorities and residents. It was held at Hoa Xuan Commune stadium, Cam Le District to discuss the construction of an eco-urban area at the commune. Approved in January for an area of 410 hectares, the project requires resettlement of 1,600 households. The meeting was hosted by: Da Nang Communist Party Unit chief Nguyen Ba Thanh; Vice Mayor Van Huu Chien; Chairman of the Da Nang Fatherland Front Committee Bui Cong Minh and directors of related departments. Thanh announced the clearance compensation rate and said the figure would be adjusted according to inflation. HAVANA - Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro has reappeared in public, meeting at a Havana hotel with a Venezuelan politician - quashing swirling rumours that the former leader was on his death bed.
