Fake police detained in Ho Chi Minh City
Police in HCM City have detained several local men who fraudulently passed themselves off as police officers while participating in protests last week. Tran Quoc Tuan, 23, was arrested on Sunday when joining a group of people who gathered at some areas in the city's centre to protest against the draft Law on Special Economic Units and the Law on Cybersecurity. Tran Quoc Tuan Tuan was found wearing police uniform and possessing a fake police identity card. He and 140 other protestors were taken to the police station for causing public disorder. A day earlier on June 16, police also detained 100 protestors including three fake police officers who carried knives, screwdrivers, tear gas spray and leaflets voicing opposition to the two controversial laws. Police in southern Vietnam’s Binh Duong Province arrested two men on Sunday for "organizing protests illegally," disrupting security and order. Police said Tran Minh Hue, 37, and Nguyen Dinh Thanh, 27, were caught making documents and encouraging others to join a rally on Sunday to protest controversial provisions of a current draft law that would allow foreign investors to lease land in Vietnam's three Special Economic Zones (SEZs) for up to 99 years. The men are accused of taking undue advantage of the National Assembly's ongoing discussion on the provisions to print flyers "with distorted content," the Vietnam News Agency reported. Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Le Thanh Liem said he has directed police to investigate the case. In December 2017, the committee issued a document directing the management and settlement of cryptocurrency and e-money in the city, he said. Cryptocurrency is considered an illegal non-cash payment method in Vietnam.
