Vietnam stock market watchdog to provide support for businesses

March 11, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – The head of Vietnam’s stock market watchdog urged players to trust the internal strengths of the economy and the resilience of Vietnam’s stock market.

The State Securities Commission of Vietnam (SSC), the country’s stock market watchdog, is considering a number of solutions to help investors and securities firms overcome negative impacts of the Covid-19 epidemic and global turmoil, according to the SSC’s Chairman Tran Van Dung.

Chairman of the SSC Tran Van Dung.

Among them are lowering fees for some brokerage services and easing regulations on margin trading, Dung told Vietnam Financial Times.

At the close on March 9, the benchmark Vn-Index plunged 6.28% to 835.49, the biggest tumble since May 2014 when the standoff between Vietnam and China occurred after China moved an oil rig into Vietnam’s waters.

Dung, however, noted the liquidity of the Hochiminh and Hanoi stock exchanges remained abudant with nearly VND6.5 trillion (US$278.69 million) traded, indicating investors were buying in battered stocks.

Besides, foreign investors remained net sellers but at a moderate amount of VND230 billion (US$9.85 million) on March 9, Dung added.

Dung said the freefall of the stock market was a common situation globally, especially as “all bad news came at one time” that directly impact investor sentiment, including the sharpest decline of oil price since 1991, prompting Goldman Sachs to predict Brent oil could drop to US$20 per barrel this year.

On early March 9, the Japanese government issued lower-than-expected economic data for 2019, heightening fears the global economy may come to a recession under the growing impacts of the Covid-19 epidemic.

The Federal Reserves (FED) on March 3 cut interest rates by 0.5% in an emergency move, prompting 65% of traders to expect the FED to continue lowering interest rates by 0.75% in the upcoming meeting on March 17. If it happens, the cut in the federal funds rate would take the borrowing cost in the short-term markets down to a range of 0.25% – 0.5% and raise concern over the US and global economies going to slow down.

For the Vietnamese stock market, new cases of Covid-19 infections were the main reason for shares going downhill, Dung said. However, Vietnam’s successful containment of the epidemic is just a matter of time, given strong determination of the government and the public.

Moreover, in the mid- and long-term, credit and fiscal support packages from the government will no doubt help enterprises recover, Dung added.

Dung urged enterprises, intermediary financial institutions and investors to trust the internal strengths of the economy and the resilience of Vietnam’s stock market.

Such confidence would help the market to rebound sooner and avoid unnecessary sell-offs, Dung stated.

In the coming time, the SSC would continue to closely monitor the market and only intervene out of necessity, Dung added, stating the authority would strictly punish cases of market manipulation or providing false information for unfair gains.

Vietnam willing to offer optimal conditions for foreign investors

March 3, 2021 by vov.vn

The Minister made the affirmation during separate receptions held on March 3 in Hanoi for Lee Kang-woo, general director of Lotte Properties Thu Thiem in Vietnam, and Horst Geicke, chairman and CEO of Ho Tram Sanctuary Company.

During the reception held for Lee Kang-woo, Minister Dung congratulated the Korean Government on its recent success in containing the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and on producing COVID-19 vaccines, materials, and goods. In addition, there was plenty of praise for the RoK’s support in helping the nation combat the pandemic.

Mutual co-operation has continued to enjoy steady growth across multiple fields in recent times, Minister Dung said, adding that the Vietnamese Government greatly appreciates the RoK’s efforts to maintain its position as the largest foreign investor in the country. At present, the nation is still striving to meet the dual goals of combating the COVID-19 pandemic and boosting socio-economic development.

Expressing great appreciation for Lotte Group’s successful investment in the country over recent years, Minister Dung affirmed that the Vietnamese Government is ready to offer support and provide the best possible conditions for both domestic and foreign investors. Indeed, this includes Korean investors such as Lotte Group who are looking to either expand their operations or make a presence in Vietnam.

Upon describing the Lotte Thu Thiem project as an important highlight for Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnamese Government official expressed hope that Kang-woo would help to speed up construction progress to ensure that products are on the market immediately after the COVID-19 pandemic is brought under control.

As part of the occasion, Kang-woo also sent a letter of thanks from the CEO of Lotte Group to Prime Minister Vietnam Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Minister Dung.

Furthermore, Kang-woo praised Vietnamese pandemic containment efforts, while stating that the RoK is also carrying out the task of fighting the pandemic and ensuring socio-economic development moving forward. Indeed, firms from the RoK, including Lotte Group, will continue to pay attention to investment in the Vietnamese market, he added.

During the meeting held with Geicke, Minister Dung emphasized that the Government remains ready to support the company’s plans to expand investment and business activities locally, believing that Geicke will help to develop the Ho Tram project into a famous tourist and resort destination.

Sharing the difficulties facing the company due to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Minister Dung stated that amid the global pandemic, tourism represents one of the most affected industries, therefore it needs to time to recover.

In response, Geicke told his host that despite suffering difficulties in terms of project implementation, the company has been striving to devise a plan to upgrade cuisine areas, villas, and hotels at Ho Tram resort. This will allow tourism products and services to be available immediately once the pandemic is fully contained globally.

Minister Dung said that the country has established a working group to promote foreign investment co-operation led by Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh. This will allow companies and investors with specific recommendations regarding policies on investment attraction to directly contact the Government Office and the working group in order report to the PM and the Government.

Coach Park Hang Seo: Vietnam needs 6 points to move forward

March 3, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

Coach Park Hang Seo has set a goal for the Vietnam national football squad: to win at least six points in the remaining three matches of Group G, the second qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup in Asia.

HLV Park Hang Seo: 'Tuyển Việt Nam cần 6 điểm để đi tiếp'

“The goal is so that we can get a card to the final round of the 2022 World Cup in Asia,” said the head coach.

Currently, after five matches, the Vietnamese team has 11 points, ranking first in Group G. It is likely that the Korean coach and his players are aiming to defeat Indonesia and Malaysia.

Of these two rivals, if Indonesia has been eliminated, Malaysia will no longer have the home advantage because the remaining matches of Group G will be held in one place, perhaps in the United Arab Emirates or Thailand.

According to the schedule announced earlier by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the Vietnamese team will face Indonesia on June 7, Malaysia on June 11 and the United Arab Emirates on June 15.

“In 2021, the Vietnamese football team will play in some important tournaments and they are great challenges. Our success is in the past, but now the team must look to the future,” the coach said.

“This is a busy year, so we will have to allocate strength in major tournaments such as the World Cup qualifiers, the Asian U23 qualifiers, the SEA Games and AFF Cup,” he added.

The Korean coach admitted that he and his team would do their best to fulfill the goals.

Regarding the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Asia, if the United Arab Emirates is chosen as the host, Vietnam and three other Southeast Asian teams in the group will have to play in extreme weather conditions. Their matches will take place in June, the peak of the summer heatwave in the Middle East. In 2020, there were days when the temperature there reached 43 degrees Celsius.

In another development, the Vietnamese team will not have to be isolated when they arrive at the place where the remaining three matches of the second qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup will be held. However, the players will be regularly tested for Covid-19 before and during the tournament.

HCM CITY — The fifth edition in a series of chick-flick movies will be released in cinemas nationwide next week, after being delayed due to the COVID-19 resurgence earlier this year.

Gái Già Lắm Chiêu V – Những Cuộc Đời Vương Giả (Camellia Sisters – Living Like Royalty) will premiere on March 12, a month after the original date of February 12, the first lunar day of the Year of the Ox.

With the pandemic controlled in much of Viet Nam , the producer MAR6 Pictures feels ready to release the movie in cinemas safely.

“Changing the film release date was a difficult decision because it disturbed the original plan, but we want to keep the audience safe and decide to delay until the viewers can safely go to the theatre to enjoy the movie,” said director Bảo Nhân.

Gái Già Lắm Chiêu V – Những Cuộc Đời Vương Giả is the fifth edition of the chick-flick series called Gái Già Lắm Chiêu (The Tricky Ladies) that was launched in 2016 by young directors Bảo Nhân and Nam Cito.

The third edition on the relationship between a woman and her mother-in-law, played by Lê Khanh and Lan Ngọc, recorded revenue of VND165 billion (US$7 million) and is one of the top 10 highest-grossing Vietnamese films of all time.

The fifth edition features late actor Hoàng Dũng in the role of wealthy Vĩnh Nghị. The film was the last he took part in before dying on February 14 from blood cancer.

Director Bảo Nhân said during the filming period, Dũng endured pain to complete the scenes. His first segment in the film was on Thiên An Hill, requiring Hoàng Dũng to ride a bicycle for many hours at night. After the filming was done, he gasped due to exhaustion.

The main filming location was a white tea garden within an ancient villa and cost more than VND2 billion ($87,000) to set up the European-style garden.

The movie was also filmed in many famous destinations in Huế in an effort to promote the beauty of local culture, tourism as well as the history of the city.

Other well-known artists also contributed to the movie, including famous designer Đỗ Mạnh Cường who worked as the fashion director and singer Bùi Lan Hương who performed the soundtrack.

Camellia Sisters – Living Like Royalty focuses on the three Lý sisters belonging to the Huế aristocracy. Three famous actresses, Lê Khanh, Hồng Vân and Kaity Nguyễn, play the three sisters.

People’s Artist Lê Khanh plays Lý Lệ Hà – the scheming eldest sister in the family with a long history of collecting antiques. To look different from her role as the mother-in-law Thái Tuyết Mai in the third edition, she cut her long hair that she had grown for more than 20 years.

People’s Artist Hồng Vân, as the second eldest sister Lý Lệ Hồng is talkative, seemingly carefree but knows a lot of family secrets. She also starred in the third edition.

Kaity Nguyễn, after the big success of Tiệc Trăng Máu (Blood Moon Party) is the youngest sister, Lý Linh.

With such a lineup of big names on the silver screen, the movie is anticipated to be a bit hit and possibly surpass the success of the third edition. — VNS
