Le Thi Bang is taking care of her son, Mai Xuan Phuc, at the National Hospital of Rehabilitation and Nursing. She has brought him to various hospitals and incurred a huge debt. Bang said she couldn’t borrow anymore but her son has still not recovered.

Bang said she lived together with a man whose wife went overseas and didn’t return. When their son was six years old and their daughter was two years old, his wife returned so they separated.

Bang’s daughter is disabled and has heart disease. Bang puts all her hope on her son. But unfortunately, after an accident, her son suffers from brain traumatic injuries. He is now paralysed and not fully conscious. Bang worked as a bricklayer to earn money. When she becomes weak, she wanders the streets to sell toothpicks and other items.

“My daughter just had heart surgery last year. I encouraged Phuc to study hard to become a pillar for me and his sister. But after the accident, he has been bed-bound for over a year. I don’t know what to do next,” Bang said.

Dr Nguyen Van Duong said, “Phuc suffers from brain traumatic injuries and lumbar spine injury. He still can’t talk and can move his left hand a bit. The treatment is long and rehabilitation is difficult. The hospital is also planning on calling for help for the family.”

Mai Xuan Chien, chairman of Quang Luu Commune People’s Committee, said, “We were able to raise VND50m for them. However, her family still needs lots of help.”

HCM CITY — Well-known composer Nguyễn Văn Chung has released a music book of 50 hit songs which he has written over the last 20 years.

The book has three chapters featuring the themes of love, family and children.

It includes the composer’s famous love ballads, such as Vầng Trăng Khóc (Tears of the Moon), Chiếc Khăn Gió Ấm (Beautiful Scarf) and Chuyện Tình Dưới Mưa (Love in Rain).

The book also consists of popular children’s songs such as Gia Đình Nhỏ — Hạnh Phúc To (Small Family — Big Happyness), Bố Ơi Kể Chuyện Con Nghe (Dad, Tell Me a Bedtime Story) and Nhật Ký Của Mẹ (Mom’s Diary).

Nhật Ký Của Mẹ is about mother’s love. It was released in 2011 and quickly became famous in the country and overseas.

In 2014, the song was translated into Japanese by composer Yoshimoto Kayo and sung by Vietnamese-Japanese singer Hải Triều, which became popular in Japan.

In 2015, the song performed by pop star Hiền Thục ranked 10th on the CD The Best of Ballroom Music Vol. 36 produced by Casa Musica, a music company in Germany. The album features 45 works performed by popular artists and bands from different countries.

It has had more than 18 million views on YouTube since its release with the voice of singer HiềnThục in 2013.

Chung’s music book includes beautiful pictures and sheet music to help readers study singing.

It also comes with photos featuring pop stars such as Khánh Phương and Bảo Thi who performe Chung’s songs.

Chung began his career in 2003 after working for Nhạc Xanh Studio, one of the city’s private music agencies.

His music styles are pop and R&B, with Vietnamese folk elements.

He has composed about 700 songs, including 300 for children.

“I have worked hard to bring more suitable songs for children, containing lessons on life and family,” said Chung, 34, who recently received a copyright certificate for his 300 songs given by the Copyright Office under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. VNS

HCM CITY — A cultural festival celebrating Hùng Kings, known as the country’s founders, began yesterday in HCM City and Thủ Đức City.

The event opened with a series of traditional games and sports, and cooking competitions at the Hùng Kings memorial area located in the Park of Culture and National History in Thủ Đức City.

The main ceremony commemorating the anniversary of the kings’ death will be organised on the 10th day of the third month of the lunar calendar, which falls on Wednesday this year.

It will include incense-offering rituals dedicated to the Hùng Kings, the National Father Lạc Long Quân and National Mother Âu Cơ, hosted by officials from the People’s Party Committee, People’s Committee and Motherland Front Committee.

A special exhibition of pictures and ancient objects featuring the country’s history and culture in different periods is being held.

Folk music and martial arts performances, staged by artists of leading traditional art troupes in the region, will be organised during the ceremony.

Vietnamese songs and instrumental music pieces will be performed. Patriotism, peace, love, youth and spring will be the shows’ themes.

In HCM City, a youth camp called Tự Hào Nòi Giống Tiên Rồng (Proudly Our Legends) with university students will open at 8am on Thursday at the Tao Đàn Cultural Park in District 3.

As per tradition, Suối Tiên and Đầm Sen parks in districts 9 and 11 will hold events for visitors to pay tribute to the Hùng Kings.

The HCM City Book Fair will also open on Nguyễn Văn Bình Street on Tuesday and Wednesday. The fair will display several thousands of book titles from four local major publishers and book distributors, including the HCM City Book Distribution Corporation and Phương Nam Books.

Many books will feature topics on Vietnamese history and culture.

“I always visit Tao Đàn Park on Hùng Kings Memorial Festival every year to offer flowers and incense to commemorate the kings. I wish good health for my family members and prosperity for the whole country,” said Lý Văn Chung, a resident of HCM City.

According to Vietnamese legend, Lạc Long Quân, the son of Kinh Dương Vương, married Âu Cơ, the daughter of King Đế Lai. Âu Cơ then gave birth to a sack containing 100 eggs from which 100 children were born.

The couple then decided to separate in order to populate the land. Half of the children followed their mother to the highlands, while the rest went with their father to the sea.

The first child went with his mother Âu Cơ to Phong Châu, now Phú Thọ Province. He then became King Hùng I and founded Văn Lang, the first recorded state in the history of Việt Nam.

Ruling the country for 18 generations, the Hùng Kings taught the people how to grow wet rice. They chose Nghĩa Lĩnh Mountain, the highest in the region, to perform rituals devoted to rice and sun deities to pray for lush crops.

In Phú Thọ, the annual Hùng Kings Memorial Festival or Hùng KingsTemple Festival, hosted by the province’s government, is organised from the 6th to 10th day of the third month of the lunar year.

The event consists of various ceremonies and entertaining activities for tourists and pilgrims nationwide. VNS
