FRANKFURT AM MAIN — The EU's new economy commissioner Paolo Gentiloni said the bloc should consider loosening its strict budget deficit rules to respond to climate risks and weak growth, echoing a similar call by French President Emmanuel Macron. The rules, which aim to enforce budgetary discipline among European Union members, were born out of the financial crisis and needed to be updated, Gentiloni told the Monday edition of the daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung. "We have different challenges now: the fight against climate change and the danger of having low growth and low inflation for an extended period," he said in comments translated into German. The EU's so-called Growth and Stability pact limits budget deficits to three per cent of gross domestic product and overall debt to 60 per cent of GDP in member states. Vietnam strives to join upper middle-income countries
While growth in most regions has slowed down, Vietnam’s economy is recovering strongly with GDP expanding by an average 6.84% during the 2016-2020 period, beating the set target and marking the highest figure in the past three five-year periods. The EVFTA and CPTPP could increase Vietnam’s GDP by 4.3% and 1.3% respectively by 2030. Such an impressive performance will lay a solid foundation for Vietnam to become a upper middle-income country by 2025. A meeting of the United Nations Security Council. — THX/VNA PhotoViet Nam News NEW YORK — Việt Nam was selected as the only candidate of the Asia-Pacific region for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for 2020-21 tenure at a monthly meeting of the Asia-Pacific Group at the UN on May 25. Under the chair of head of the Samoa Mission to the United Nations Ambassador Ali’ioaiga Feturi Elsaia, who is the group’s chairman in May, the 54-member group agreed to nominate Việt Nam as its only candidate for the position. The voting will be held by the UN General Assembly in June, 2019. Ba Ria-Vung Tau conference promotes regional and international trade potentials
The conference, held in Vung Tau City on November 29, attracted the participation of many trade representatives and foreign trade promotion organizations in Vietnam.
