Readers of Dantri/DTiNews have donated a total VND125 million (USD5,434) to a poor family in the central province of Nghe An which needs urgent help to provide treatment for three ailing children. The donation granted for the family Bui Van Hong, 36, and Tran Thi Phuong, 34, have an eldest child Bui Thi Ngoc Tram, eight, who faces blood disorders, causing poliosis. The third child Bui Van Luyen, four, has been diagnosed with kidney and hearing problems. Meanwhile, the four-month-old child Bui Van Khanh suffers from a cleft palate which troubles him in eating. The couple only depends on farming and a modest income of the husband who works as a builder. They have incurred a big debt following the third child’s treatment. Over 40 million poor families receive direct assistance
The Government issues diverse policies assisting poverty reduction among ethnic minority families. (Photo: baoxaydung.com.vn)Throughout 8 years of implementing Decision 102/2009/QD-TTg, over 40 million people from poor families in disadvantaged regions were assisted. However, because of changes in policies and the development of the economy, the decision’s support is not suitable with reality anymore. Specifically, direct assistance is more suitable for a short term effect without bringing long-term and sustainable efficiency, as some groups of people rely on the assistance and do not make efforts in escaping poverty themselves. The previous assistance was not high enough for boosting production and eliminating poverty in disadvantaged regions. Meanwhile, other policies in support of production, including the national target programs and policies carried out by the Ethnic Minority Committees make actual effect of the decision less significant. The district disbursed capital from the poverty reduction fund giving loans to 575 poor and nearly-poor families, thus creating jobs for 863 people. Additionally, nearly 2,000 poor and nearly-poor families accessed loans from organizations and unions worth more than VND20 billion. In 2017, 10,606 medical insurance cards were distributed to poor people. While the fund for the poor helped build 48 charitable houses using VND2.4 billion, repair two others using VND58 million and give assistance worth over VND290 million to 57 extremely disadvantaged families, the district budget provided support to 14 poor and nearly-poor families with VND35 million, and assisted more than 1,600 poor families with VND717 million in power fees./.
