Woodland vegetables: The esoteric delicacy of central Vietnam’s Cham Islands

April 12, 2021 by vietnamlife.tuoitrenews.vn

The secret ingredient that spices up local dishes with unmistakable aromas, ‘forest vegetables’ are nature’s gift from the robust woodlands of Cu Lao Cham, or Cham Islands, which are located just 15 kilometers away off central Vietnam’s Quang Nam Province.

Little bags of vegetables are the most sought-after souvenirs when tourists visit the small islands.

The Cham Islands constitute a group of eight small islands which form the Cu Lao Cham Marine Park, but only one island is inhabited by people.

This tourist route is strictly monitored by Quang Nam administrators who fear that an influx of visitors will affect the Cu Lao Cham Marine Park.

Specialties that the place offers include abalones, sea urchins, crabs, and edible bird’s nests, which all prove much more appetizing than what is offered in the restaurants along the well-trodden tourist shore of Hoi An.

Fresh seafood on the islands is highly sought after by tourists; however, the forest vegetables, the true star ingredient there, are not known by many since they are only offered in limited supply.

Often called ‘forest vegetables’ or ‘island vegetables,’ they are actually a mishmash of various leafy varieties found in Cham Islands’ forest, traditionally cooked with prawns and crabs caught in the area.

Among the most fastidious eaters of Vietnam, food connoisseurs in Hanoi have a soft spot for the exotic flavor of greens on Cham Islands.

In a Hanoian’s cookbook, leafy greens from the islands with crabs harvested on the central shore make a bowl of soup with succulence matched by none.

Visitors looking for the latter ingredient must take a boat trip from the shore of Vietnam’s tourism hub Hoi An City to the islands, which may not be available during days of rough seas.

According to Le Thi Bich Cong, a public servant-turned-restaurateur on the islands, forest vegetables are the hidden gem that is treasured by epicures all over Vietnam.

The product has managed to charm many customers from the very first taste, inviting them to come back for more.

Local residents take pride in their home being a plastic-free island, where no traces of synthetic packages can be found in sight.

For this reason, the bags that come with forest vegetables are all recyclable ones, with some pieces handcrafted by locals.

However, as the resource is limited, there is a set quota for the volume of vegetables to be sold, which makes the packets of greens from Cham Islands more of a specialty.

“Local harvesters only go pick the vegetables in the early morning,” Cong said.

“They will pick the freshest buds out of a variety of greens, then store them in hand-sewn bags before bringing them home.”

The products are not brought to the market, but only sold to family members and acquaintances.

“[The vegetables] are good partly because they’re exclusive,” Cong said, adding that she named herself ‘Rau Rung’ (Forest vegetables) on Facebook as they are the ingredient that nurtured her through her childhood years.

Medicinal values

Leafy greens from the woods of Cham Islands have more than one use: a certain assortment of leaves, branches, and roots of herb trees can be used as tea when dried properly.

There are some 80 varieties of herbs and greens considered edible from the forest, but around 35 make up the essential repertoire of Cham Islands vegetables, according to senior citizens.

Some of the greens are plants that are frowned upon by people from the mainland, such as the pungent Ageratum conyzoides flower.

Before the arrival of tourism, the treasured greens were only circulated and consumed by islanders.

As supply is finite, households would take turns harvesting to ensure the trees are able to regenerate.

Locals believe that vegetables on their islands are not merely food, but also medicine which helps cleanse the body, detox the liver, and control blood sugar levels.

In a normal meal of Cham Islands people, both leaves from woody trees and herbaceous stems can be found, which creates slight notes of tartness when combined together.

Besides providing a kick of flavor for crab soups, the woodland vegetables can also be served blanched with fish sauce as a dipping condiment and the blanching water on the side as a refreshing soup.

Set at a rather high price of VND50,000 ($2.17) for a tiny bag, Cham Islands vegetables are not available to everyone, as only a few who have the connection can buy them.

The veil of esotericism, in a sense, is what makes each small bag of greens a soulful delicacy that leaves an unforgettable experience to those who have the privilege to taste it.

Farmers in Southeast provinces have bad crop of cashew

April 11, 2021 by sggpnews.org.vn

Cashew productivity mainly depends on the weather

Binh Phuoc Province is considered as the cashew capital of the country, with about 170,000 hectares and an output of 243,000 tons per year, mainly concentrated in Phu Rieng, Bu Gia Map, Bu Dang, and Dong Phu districts. This place creates jobs for about 50,000 workers in rural areas.

Mr. Dieu Thanh, a farmer in Dak O Commune in Bu Gia Map District, has two hectares of over-20-year-old cashew trees that are developing well and not damaged by cashew stem borer as in previous years. He spent VND10 million for fertilizing and spraying nourishing agents for cashew flowers. His cashew trees were blooming more flowers than the previous year.  Unfortunately, after the Lunar New Year, there was a prolonged period of hoar frost, causing cashew flowers to dry, and young cashew fruits to fall a lot. During this time in the previous year, his family collected 2 tons of fresh cashew, but up to now, only about 100 kilograms of fresh cashew have been collected. Many households in the commune also suffered from lean harvest in this crop.

On the contrary, Mr. Nguyen Van Long, a farmer in Tien Hung Commune in Dong Xoai City, has three hectares of cashew trees that are giving high yield. Currently, Mr. Long’s family is entering the second phase of the harvest season, with a yield of 2 tons per hectare. Cashew prices are stable at VND24,000-VND27,000 per kilogram of fresh cashew, after deducting expenses, his family earns more than VND1 billion. Mr. Long said that cashew trees give a good harvest or not, it depends a lot on the weather, fertilization, and care. Right from the beginning of the year, his family pruned branches, removed old cashew trees with low productivity, and spend nearly VND20 million to fertilize and spray plant protection drugs, so the garden is clean and free from pests and diseases.

A survey in many cashew plantations in localities with large cashew areas such as Bu Dang, Dong Phu, and Bu Gia Map districts shows that if the cashew plantations are taken care of well, the trees have fewer pests and diseases and give an average yield of 2 tons per hectare. Many cashew plantations are close to each other, but there is a quite large difference in productivity because the care and cultivation capacity of each household is different.

Because cashew trees give fruits late this year, the 250-hectare organic cashew plantation that meets the European standards of Mr. Dung Quy Dong in Tan Hung Commune of Dong Phu District has just been harvested for half a month this month. According to Mr. Dong, organic cashew cultivation is not affected by weather and pests, so the yield next year is higher than the previous year.

Mr. Dong shared that last year, in the first harvest with nearly 100 hectares, his family collected more than 200 tons of cashew. It is expected that his cashew plantation would produce about 500 tons of cashew this year. With the current price, he would earn more than VND10 billion. However, because of the large harvest area, he was worried about a labor shortage.

Currently, he needs 150-200 workers every day, but he has just been able to hire 100 regular workers at the price of VND250,000 per person per day, higher than the previous year.

Taking care of the cash crop

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Phuoc Province admitted that this year due to the high-temperature difference between day and night, it had negative impacts on the flowering and fruiting of cashew trees, but well-cared-for cashew plantations have fewer harmful pests and diseases and cashew yield is still high. The Department recommended that farmers need to take care of their cashew plantations regularly and should not abuse pesticides. Especially, they should use the right drugs and dosage, choose safe plant protection drugs for the trees, ensure health for people, and reduce care costs.

Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan, Director of the Statistics Office of Dong Nai Province, said that the whole province has about 36,000 hectares of cashew trees, down nearly 14,000 hectares compared to 2010. Farmers continue to chop down cashew trees to switch to other crops with higher economic efficiency, due to low cashew prices and its dependence on the weather.

According to the agricultural sector of Dong Nai Province, cashew can be grown in sloping areas, especially in ethnic minority areas and remote areas. Cashew is still considered as a crop for hunger eradication and poverty alleviation and key crop. The industry will carry out solutions to remove difficulties for farmers, such as finding and expanding the consumption markets, supporting and encouraging people to apply scientific and technical advances in production to improve productivity, quality, and promote deep processing.

Binh Phuoc Province is facing the situation of selling young cashew in the ethnic minority areas. If there were only 482 households selling young cashew, with a total area of 683.75 hectares for VND28.8 billion in 2017, there were 663 households last year, with a total area of 1,161.13 hectares for more than VND37.5 billion, concentrated in Bu Dang and Bu Gia Map districts. To stop this situation, the provincial People’s Committee has instructed authorities to focus on propaganda about the forms and tricks of the subjects who buy young cashew to raise awareness for farmers to prevent frauds that lead to debts, foreclosure, and loss of cultivation land.

Ngoc Ha flower village makes effort to keep its scent

April 12, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

Hanoi’s ancient Ngoc Ha flower village no longer grows flowers but recently the nice colors are seen and pleasant odors of flowers scented once again here, thanks to green projects of the residents.

Hanoi’s ancient Ngoc Ha flower village no longer grows flowers but recently the nice colors are seen and pleasant odors of flowers scented once again here, thanks to green projects of the residents.

The Women’s Union of Ngoc Ha Ward (Ba Dinh District) has successfully implemented greening models that not only bring back the image of the thriving flower village of the yesteryear but also benefit the community.

Flowers in the street

Ngoc Ha village was such a small place and so densely populated that the land was not enough for growing rice but only flowers, according to the elders in the village.

The village was then known as the capital’s kingdom of flowers where every one came to find the right variety for each occasion as well as enjoy the glamourous landscape.

In the rapid urbanization nowadays, with the increase of the population from all walks of life, the traditional flower trade disappears.

Moreover, the poor awareness of some people who litter anywhere, spontaneous dumps appear all over the place, blocking the way to visit relic sites in the area as well as disfiguring its beautiful image and polluting the environment.

Seeing the issue, the Women’s Union of Ngoc Ha Ward embraced the idea of reviving the alley a few years ago. After being approved by the local authority, the project of turning the dumps into a painting exhibition known as “Ngoc Ha in the past and today” and building a community garden known as “Flowers in the street” was carried out.

The project was supported by everyone in the place, only women but people of different ages and  occupations, according to Ms. Cu Thi Kim Thuan, Secretary of the Residential Area No. 5 of the alley.

The alley profile has changed totally since then. Dumps in the alley have been eradicated. In their places, pots of flowers and plants bring a charming scene to the old village-turned-urban neighborhood.

Furthermore, thanks to the exhibition, visitors to Ngoc Ha village can learn not only about the flower village but also history of the place, especially Huu Tiep Lake where the local people shot down B52 bomber during the American air raids in Hanoi in 1972.

Great efforts

The model of “Flowers in the street” has been replicated in other alleys of the area. Following the success of the previous one, another project, “Green streets”, has been also executed, creating more green spaces with trees, pots of flowers and bonsai, and mural paintings.

“At the beginning, no one believed that the garbage dumps could be removed. However, we make an effort to persuade and mobilize people to take action. Gradually, they see the benefits of keeping their own place green, clean and beautiful,” said the Chairwoman of the union Chu Thanh Loan.

The fund for the project is raised from both the support of the local government and the contribution of the residents.

According to Head of the Women’s Union in the Residential Area No. 7, Ngoc Ha Ward, Pham Thi Xuyen, local women and residents are encouraged to sort out recyclable waste such as paper, bottles, boxes, and sell to raise fund for the model “Collecting scrap, keeping green”.

The money is used to buy pots for plants and flowers to build “hanging” gardens in the alleys.

Seeing the efficiency of the model, more and more people have joined to build up more “flower gardens” in the area for “green, clean and beautiful” streets.

Obviously, it also educates the people about dumping garbage in the right place, protecting the environment and keeping the public space clean and beautiful.

Besides these green and beautiful projects, another campaign promoting “Good Conduct” is also launched by the Women’s Union of Ngoc Ha Ward. It supports members of the union through giving health insurance cards, supporting school expenses of poor people’s children and house reparation, among others.

These efforts contribute to make Ngoc Ha Village an interesting destination for those who want to learn about the beauty and cultural values of the thousand- year-old city.
