Around 20 kilometers from downtown Saigon, a street less than two kilometers long has around 100 big holes, each about four meters wide, forcing people and vehicles to move around them and through. "It's the rockiest road on the planet. All vehicles passing through here slow down to a crawl, people often break their limbs (after falling off their vehicles) and get taken to the hospital," said Thai Van Tong, a local. A motorbike goes through one of the muddy water filled holes on Nu Dan Cong Street in Binh Chanh District. Local Tran Van Hung falls off his motorbike while trying to get through one of the holes on the street. "Hiking through jungles and streams is easier than traversing this hellhole. If I'm dead or injured, who will compensate me and my family...?" he said, angrily. A merchant receives assistance from another man as he prepares to take on another challenge. The condition of the road has left several businesses hungry for customers, with some saying they are "on the verge … [Read more...] about Saigon lays claim to ‘rockiest road on the planet’

An international team of scientists has developed a diet it says can improve health while ensuring sustainable food production to reduce further damage to the planet. It's based on cutting red meat and sugar consumption in half and upping intake of fruits, vegetables and nuts. And it can prevent up to 11.6 million premature deaths without harming the planet, says the report published Wednesday in the medical journal The Lancet. The authors warn that a global change in diet and food production is needed as 3 billion people across the world are malnourished -- which includes those who are under and overnourished -- and food production is overstepping environmental targets, driving climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. The world's population is set to reach 10 billion people by 2050; that growth, plus our current diet and food production habits, will "exacerbate risks to people and planet," according to the authors. "The stakes are very high," Dr. Richard Horton, editor in … [Read more...] about New global diet can save lives and the planet, major review suggests
By Reuters  September 20, 2018 | 07:51 am GMT+7 Alibaba Group co-founder and executive chairman Jack Ma attends the WAIC (World Artificial Intelligence Conference) in Shanghai, China, September 17, 2018. Photo by Reuters/Aly Song Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma said the company can no longer meet its promise to create 1 million jobs in the United States. This was due to U.S.-China trade tensions, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported on Wednesday. Ma had met U.S. President Donald Trump two years ago and laid out the Chinese e-commerce giant’s plan to bring one million small U.S. businesses onto its platform to sell to Chinese consumers over the next five years. “This commitment is based on friendly China-U.S. cooperation and the rational and objective premise of bilateral trade,” Ma told Xinhua. “The current situation has already destroyed the original premise. There is no way to deliver the promise.” Ma said on Tuesday that trade tensions … [Read more...] about Alibaba’s Jack Ma says can’t meet promise to create 1 million US jobs: Xinhua
Former English teacher Jack Ma, 54, has become a globally recognised figure through his constant travel and playful antics (Photo: AFP/JORGE SILVA) On the morning of Sep 10, China’s most famous billionaire announced plans to step down as head of the company he founded. Jack Ma revealed he would leave his role as executive chairman of Alibaba Group, the e-commerce and internet behemoth he has led for its entire 19-year existence. In a letter to the 86,000 employees of Alibaba, Ma stated that he would remain as executive chairman for a transition period of one year, at the end of which he will hand the reigns to Daniel Zhang, who has served as CEO of the firm since replacing Ma in that role three years ago. Ma also announced in the letter that he intends to continue to serve on the company’s board of directors until its annual meeting in 2020. In a heartfelt and eloquent letter characteristic of the charismatic entrepreneur, he expressed gratitude for, and confidence in, … [Read more...] about Where next, Jack Ma?
He is set to concentrate on philanthropy and education, passing on the reins to trusted lieutenant Daniel Zhang. Ma, who turned 54 on Monday, has long flagged plans to step back, insisting that Alibaba management should be relatively young and his retirement is not expected to affect the running of the company. But it is still extremely rare for a founder of big and transformative tech firm, especially one with a cult-like status like Ma, to retire so early. "There's only Bill Gates who has done the same. No other tech founder in the world has just resigned like that at the top," said Rupert Hoogewerf, Shanghai-based founder of the Hurun Report, which publishes an annual influential list of China's richest people. Hoogewerf added that in China, Ma was a figure like no other, with friends ranging from movie stars to billionaire moguls, though he often outshone them all. "He's the big one, he's the one that brings them together." Ma will give up the chairman role in exactly one year on … [Read more...] about Alibaba’s Jack Ma to step down in one year, hand baton to CEO Zhang
