(Photo: SGGP) After five days of trial, the People's Court of Binh Thuan Province, on the afternoon of August 19, gave sentences to nine accused related to the largest petroleum smuggling case in Binh Thuan Province, with a total value of more than VND2.03 trillion from Singapore to Vietnam. Of these, the accused Luyen Xuan Trang, 49, a resident in Hung Yen Province, considered the leader of the largest petroleum smuggling ring in Binh Thuan Province, worth more than VND2.03 trillion, was given a 14-year jail sentence for smuggling. Vietnam sees rise in Covid-19 infections and deaths

Vietnam has seen a recent rise in the number of Covid-19 infections and deaths due to the appearance of new Omicron sub-variants. On Thursday, Vietnam recorded 3,295 Covid-19 cases, the highest figure for the past three months. The country also reported a total of around 15,000 Covid-19 infections over the past three days. The number of Covid-19 patients with serious symptoms in the country increased to 208. Over the past week, Vietnam has witnessed seven Covid-19 deaths. ITE HCMC, the largest and most established travel event in the Mekong Delta region, will be held under the theme of “Growing Forward Together” as part of the efforts to revive inbound tourism. 40 Vietnamese arrested at border after fleeing forced labour in Cambodia

According to their testimony, a total of 42 people tried to escape from a casino in Sampeou Poun commune, Kaoh Thom district, Kandal province in Cambodia and swam across Binh Ghi River to return to Vietnam. They said they had previously fled to Cambodia to work at a casino. Their job was to make online games and go to social media websites at the instruction of the people at the casino but they were constantly forced to work overtime without any payment. Vietnam’s COVID-19 daily count hits 3-month high

Vietnam recorded nearly 3,300 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the highest daily count in more than three months, with the Ministry of Health attributing the resurgence to the new fast-spreading Omicron sub-variants. The health ministry documented 3,295 COVID-19 patients on Thursday, raising the national tally to 11,376,571, with 10,049,215 recoveries and 43,103 deaths. The country has so far detected four Omicron sub-variants including BA.4, BA.5, BA.2.12.1, and BA.2.74, which are more transmissible than the original strain, according to the General Department of Preventive Medicine under the health ministry. At Hanoi’s COVID-19 treatment hospital, the number of patients has bounced back in the past week. The facility is providing treatment for about 35-37 patients, most of whom have underlying conditions.
