Dong Thap is proud to offer hundreds of local products to the wider world. According to Pham Thien Nghia, Chairman of Dong Thap People’s Committee, the event will be held provincewide to promote the cultural identity of Dong Thap people and honour lotus flowers, as well as promote cultural and economic values for products made from Dong Thap lotus plants. The festival, titled “The New Day Lotus”, is also aimed at enhancing lotus farming in association with tourism development. This will help the province build its image and develop local products to attract more tourists and contribute to local socioeconomic development. According to the organisers, the festival will feature a variety of cultural and tourist activities, including art programmes, a workshop on improving the value chain of Dong Thap products, and a “Lotus in Me” art performance. Hanoi-headquartered Techcombank recorded another year of stellar financial performance and growth in 2021, while continuing to support its customers, employees and communities in Vietnam, especially those impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, the bank recorded VND37.1 trillion (over $1.6 billion) in its total operating income, up 35.4 percent year-on-year. The bank’s profit before tax (PBT) rose to VND23.2 trillion. The company has achieved double-digit PBT growth for five consecutive years, at a compound average growth rate (CAGR) of 50 percent between 2016 and 2021. The bank’s performance remained resilient despite Covid-19 casting its shadow on the local markets and causing disruption to businesses and people’s lives. The aviation market in Vietnam is vibrant and recovering with the number of international visitors increasing five-fold, according to experts. VNA/VNS Photo According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), in April, Vietnam's airports handled 6.6 million passengers, down 14.3 per cent compared to the same time last year but the number of foreign visitors reached more than 230,000 in April, an impressive increase of 502 per cent over the same period last year when COVID-19 was developing in a complex fashion. CAAV said Vietnamese airlines transported 3.28 million passengers, including 80,000 foreigners. Compared to the same period last year, the number of international passengers choosing services of Vietnamese airlines rose 214.7 per cent, while the number of domestic passengers dropped 18.2 per cent. As Vietnam reopens its borders to tourism, attracting, developing and retaining a quality workforce has become the top priority for this industry. With borders reopened and tourism promotion campaigns launched in Vietnam, hotels, tour operators and ancillary service providers across the country might be facing a major problem: shortage of qualified labor. Dr Nuno F. Ribeiro, RMIT University Vietnam During the worst period of the pandemic in 2020-2021, many tourism organizations had to reduce their (experienced) workforce. A report by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism revealed that tourism businesses cut staff by 70-80% in 2020. In 2021, the number of full-time tourism employees was down to 25%  of the 2020 level, and about 30% quit their jobs or had their contracts terminated. All state firms should further shift their investment activities towards using green technology with lower carbon emission levels.
