The Ministry of Health has announced a plan to prioritize the country’s limited resource of Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine as follow-up doses to people who have already received one dose of AstraZeneca's viral vector vaccine. The direction was stated in a guidance document issued on Thursday by the Ministry of Health. It is considered an attempt to strengthen protection against the coronavirus for residents, considering the effectiveness of a mix-and-match approach to COVID-19 vaccines - using different brands for first and second doses - was reported in other countries, including Canada, Germany, France, Norway and South Korea. The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Science and Technology held a meeting on July 22 to review the outcomes of clinical trials of the vaccine, which is produced by Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology JSC based on recombinant DNA/protein technology. Based on the evaluation, the vaccine may be approved for emergency use. It went through the first phase trial from December 18, 2020, and the second phase from February 26, 2021. The third phase started on June 11, 2021. Results from the first two trial phases showed that all volunteers developed antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. A total of 1,228,500 shots of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, part of a 30-million-dose contract, arrived in Vietnam on Friday morning. The vaccine batch landed at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, according to Vietnam Vaccine JSC (VNVC). This is part of the 30 million jabs that VNVC has purchased from AstraZeneca with the support from the Ministry of Health. AstraZeneca has so far sent more than 3.1 million doses out of the 30 million shots to the Southeast Asian country in five shipments. The previous four batches arrived on February 24, May 25, July 9, and July 15. The largest ever vaccination campaign in history has posed both opportunities and challenges to the cold storage industry as tens of millions of vaccine doses need to be preserved at the same time. CDC Hanoi's cold warehouse At a working session with Deputy Minister of Health Truong Quoc Cuong recently, CDC Hanoi Deputy Director Nguyen Thi Kieu Anh said CDC Hanoi has one cold warehouse with the capacity of 40 cubic meters, which can contain an additional 150,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses, and one cold warehouse with the capacity of 16 cubic meters which can contain an additional 100,000 AstraZeneca doses. Hanoi also has six 3000 and 3000 AC refrigerators (the capacity of 126 liters can contain 10,000 doses each), and six cold boxes with the capacity of 44 liters each. This is the second batch of the vaccines to arrive in Vietnam this month, taking total donations from the U.S. to more than five million doses. These are part of 80 million doses that U.S. President Joe Biden has pledged to donate to various countries, more than half of it under Covax. Vietnam is a beneficiary of U.S. donations being made under Covax as well as under "regional priorities and other recipients." As of Sunday, Vietnam has received 7.49 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines through the Covax program - 5 million doses of Moderna and 2.49 million doses of AstraZeneca.
