Vietnamese, Tanzanian boxers to vie for IBA World Championship

March 25, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

The event is scheduled to take place at Trigger Boxing Gym in HCMC on July 18.

Thao, 28, said Majiha will be his toughest rival to date. The 27-year-old Tanzania boxer has competed in 44 professional matches with 26 wins, 14 losses and four draws and won the WBA Pan African Bantamweight championship in 2018.

The “Vietnamese Mayweather” has pocketed 13 wins and one loss.

After deciding to move up from super flyweight (51-52 kg) to super bantamweight (54-55 kg) to compete for World Boxing Council Australasian, Thao failed to defeat Australia’s Billy Dib to bring home the title in late 2019, marking his first loss after 12 consecutive wins.

He managed to rebuild from this loss by beating Filipino boxer Aries Buenavidez at the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific match held in Cambodia during February last year.

Thao is the first local fighter to make his name internationally. He shot to fame after defeating Indonesia’s George Lumoly to become the first Vietnamese boxer to win a World Boxing Council (WBC) Asia title in November 2017.

But he couldn’t compete in the 2018 WBC championship after sustaining injuries from a traffic accident. Since he couldn’t defend his title, organizers decided to strip him of the title.

Tien Minh bags 1st world medal despite semi defeat

August 10, 2013 by tuoitrenews.vn

Vietnamese badminton star Nguyen Tien Minh could not play his way through the semifinal of the ongoing world championship in China, but the bronze medal is more than enough for the 30-year-old.

Minh, the world’s number 7, was today defeated 0 – 2 by China’s Olympic champion Lin Dan after a thrilling semifinal during the 2013 BWF World Championships in Guangzhou, China.

The Vietnamese fought sensationally at the first set, but was eventually beaten 17 – 21, before being brushed 21 – 15 at the second game.

Lin Dan thus earned the first place at the final, and will face the winner of the clash between arch-rival and world No.1 Lee Chong Wei and Du Pengyu of China.

Nguyen Tien Minh took home the bronze medal, a trophy he said before the semifinal is a “lifetime achievement.”

On Friday, Minh wowed millions of his fans back home by defeating Jan O. Jorgensen of Denmark during a breathtaking quarterfinal, where he took a 1 – 0 lead before settling the final game at 22 – 20 with a powerful smash.

“I was overwhelmed by happiness,” Minh, who was once standing at the #5 post of the world tally, told reporters after the very match.

This is the first time a Vietnamese badminton player advanced into the semifinal at a world championship, and Tien Minh is “pleased with the first-ever world medal,” he said before the semi.

The World Badminton Championship is the most prestigious tournament of the sport, where players will be competing as individuals in five events, Men’s singles, Women’s singles, Men’s and Women’s doubles and Mixed doubles to win the title of World Champion.

The first edition was held in 1977 as a biennial event. But since 2003, it has been held every year except Olympic years.

Top flight: South Korea’s 18-year-old world drone champion

March 30, 2021 by dtinews.vn

In a South Korean rice field, the teenage world drone-racing champion is preparing to defend his title in one of the planet’s fastest and highest-tech sports.

Mr Kang Chang-hyeon fears he is quickly passing his prime to compete at top flight levels.PHOTO: AFP

But at all of 18 years old, Kang Chang-hyeon fears he is quickly passing his prime to compete at top flight levels.

On the starting signal, Kang and his three teammates send their craft buzzing furiously into the air and hurtling around an obstacle course set up on the bare earth in Hwaseong, south of Seoul.

The only human movement was the twitches of fingers on handsets, which the pilots use to control the aircraft while wearing virtual-reality goggles that give them a drone’s-eye view of the route.

Three laps and around one minute later, the race was over and the technical analysis began in a dedicated tent, with pilots, coaches, technicians and parents poring over flight data.

Like Formula One, drone-flying depends both on precision engineering and pilot skill.

Racing drones are custom-built by competitors and their teams, and reach speeds of up to 170 kilometres (105 miles) per hour. But races are so close, with timings measured in thousandth of a second.

And it is a young flyer’s game.

Lightning-fast reflexes, visual sharpness and hours of training are the key to success, according to Kang.

He says he is already facing physical decline as a new generation of younger rivals arrives, some of them still in primary school.

“Those qualities are the best in your early- to mid-teenage years,” said the still pimply-faced pilot.

Kang said his reflexes were “inevitably” slowing with each passing year, and he was not ruling out retirement before turning 20.

It will be “pretty tough to compete against them in my adult years,” he said.

“I think I may not make it past this year.”

One 12-year-old girl already has him in her sights.

“When I first met Kang Chang-hyeon, I was in awe of him and it felt like a dream,” said Jeong Ryeo-won, after taking part in a league round in the southern county of Hadong.

But now she “really wants” to beat him: “He is my role model, so I hope to compete against him at the world championships, but win.”

– Split second –

Only three years after first flying a toy drone, Kang, at age 16, took the world title at a 2019 championship in China, where South Korean pilots dominated.

“Maintaining composure is key to winning because a split-second decision can determine the outcome of a race,” he said.

“Minimising your mistakes while staying calm regardless of who’s ahead of you is critical.”

Kang’s high school in rural Hongseong county has sought to capitalise on his success by promoting itself as a specialist drone school — with Kang as its ambassador — offering lessons in piloting to attract more pupils.

But the coronavirus pandemic deprived him of the chance to defend his crown at the peak of his abilities, when the Swiss-based Federation Aeronautique Internationale, the world governing body for air sports, was forced to cancel the 2020 world championships.

“I could have competed really well last year,” he said.

– Military mission –

Like other young South Korean men achieving global success, from pop stars BTS to Spurs striker Son Heung-min, compulsory military service weighs on his path.

South Korea remains technically at war with nuclear-armed North Korea, and all able-bodied South Korean males must spend around 18 months in the forces before they turn 30.

The only exceptions are for Olympic medallists and Asian Games champions, along with the winners of some international classical music competitions.

But Kang’s skills could be of “great value” for the armed forces, said his coach Kim Jae-hong, who led the national team at the 2019 world championships.

South Korea’s 555,000-strong military is heavily outnumbered by North Korea’s 1.28 million troops.

But the South enjoys technological superiority including, according to the defence ministry, a fleet of around 800 drones for training and experimental combat purposes.

“The drone units’ monitoring mission is basically based on controlling a drone with a camera live feed, which is the same for drone racing,” the coach said.

“Kang and other racers can contribute greatly to its mission while maintaining their drone-control skills.”

The 200km journey of a world chess champion

March 22, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

Nguyen Thien Ngan, 10th grader at Chu Van An High School, Thai Nguyen Province, has earned people’s admiration for winning nearly 180 medals after nine years of competition.

Ngan receives the U14 Women’s World Cup at the 2019 World Youth Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship in Spain organized by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

Ngan is the owner of the two gold medals for the rapid and blitz chess content of the 2019 World Youth Chess Championship organized by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

At that time Ngan was a 9th grader. At this tournament, Ngan was evaluated by the Vietnam Chess Federation to have made an important contribution to the national flag team to win the first place in the delegation. This was the first time that a Vietnamese player had won the highest chess position in the world.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Ngan’s father said: “I never thought she could get such an achievement.”

“At the end of the 5-year-old kindergarten year, the teacher asked whoever liked to play chess. At that time, Ngan did not know what chess was, but still raised her hand. After about one to two weeks, the teachers said she exceled at quickly remembering the pieces, the board and some basic moves. In the first grade, Ngan joined the school chess team. After the first semester, the teachers at Thai Nguyen Sports and Physical Training School for Gifted Students told the family to send her to chess classes”.

At that time, Cong’s family refused because the family was not financially stable.

“However, the teachers said that the girl is qualified and temporarily exempted the tuition fee for her,” Mr. Cong said.

When she came to chess class, Ngan was the youngest. At that time, other classmates knew how to play and compete, and Ngan was too young. So Ngan kept watching and when the chess pieces fell, she picked them up for others. Somehow, it was through those days that she remembered and learned a lot of moves.

When she was just a first-grader, Ngan was on the team of excellent students to join Thai Nguyen’s Phu Dong sports championship and unexpectedly won first prize in the age group 6-9.

In the second grade, Ngan continued to win the first prize in this age group at the chess award for students in Thai Nguyen province. At the National Phu Dong Championship 2016, Ngan won a silver medal and a bronze medal in the advanced group.

In the summer of the first grade, Ngan spent 20 days away from her parents to practice chess in preparation for the National Young Chess Championship. That year, Ngan did not win any prize and was ranked 30th. However, Ngan was even more motivated.

Professor Ngo Bao Chau watched the game of young player Nguyen Thien Ngan at the chess tournament organized by Talinpa Talents Nursery. At this tournament, she won the championship.

200km to the chess class

Ngan’s family lives in the city of Thai Nguyen, nearly 100km from Hanoi. Since Ngan was in the first grade, Mr. Cong took his daughter to Hanoi to practice chess and compete at chess tournaments.

In the third grade, Ngan was instructed by her father how to ride a bus by herself from Thai Nguyen to Hanoi to practice chess.

“For six years, every weekend, she traveled nearly 200km alone. I asked some friends and relatives in Hanoi to pick up Ngan to the chess class. Later, parents of Ngan’s classmates invited her to their home,” Cong said.

Ngan tried her best to fulfil her study at school while still practicing chess in Hanoi at weekend. For 10 consecutive years, Ngan won the title of excellent student.

At the age of 11, Ngan was given the Southeast Asian grandmaster title after winning the U12 Southeast Asia Championship. At the age of 12, she won the World Bronze medal. At the age of 14, she was qualified and promoted to the FIDE master title.

Within 9 years of competition (2011-2019), she competed at about 60 major domestic and international prizes and won 179 medals of all kinds and many certificates of merit. Ngan’s goal is to become an international grandmaster before the age of 20.

Mr. Cong said that through playing chess, Ngan has been trained in bravery, independence and discipline.

“She has a mindset, a specific plan for each day’s tasks, like playing a game of chess. Chess also helps her to improve her independence because she is accustomed to solving problems herself. Only when something is so difficult, she asked for support. In addition, chess helps Ngan learn how to control her emotions,” Cong said.
