Pacific economic cooperation
After 15 years of accession to the Asia-Pacific Cooperation (APEC), Viet Nam has confirmed its stride on the path of international and regional economic integration. Benefits that APEC has brought about to Viet Nam have contributed to its external economic relation expansion, industrialization and modernization and national development. On the other hand, Viet Nam has made active contribution to the forum's rigorous growth and considerably strengthened its voice and status in the international arena. APEC - the primary regional economic "playing field" Established in 1989 as an initiative of Australia, APEC initially constituted 12 economies in the Pacific rims with a modest objective to create more favorable environment for trade and investment cooperation. Recently, high-level officials from 21 member economies of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) and the Experts Group on Illegal Logging and Associated Trade (EGILAT) of APEC have held a meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia. Chaired the meeting, Indonesia has urged the member economies to promote their commitment to environmental protection, including the protection of forest and marine ecosystems, to support sustainable economic growth since APEC accounts for 55% of the world's forest area. EGILAT also stated the importance of managing and protecting forest and marine ecosystems for the development of a sustainable and green APEC economy. In his statement at the official Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum trade ministers meeting on June 2nd Morning, Vice-Prime Minister Vu Khoan frankly shared the thoughts of the host country: "APEC is facing the urgent need for reforming, perfecting itself and affirming its position in the world economy" According to Vice-Prime Minister Vu Khoan, the task of the Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) is to map out an action plan for implementing the Busan Roadmap toward Bogor goals that is to say "towards a dynamic community and a sustainable development" like the 2006's APEC topic. The ninth meeting of the Vietnam-Australia Joint Trade and Economic Cooperation Committee was held in Melbourne on June 25 under the chairmanship of Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc and Australian Minister for Trade Simon Crean. The meeting covered a broad range of bilateral, regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest, focusing on key areas of potential growth in the bilateral commercial relations, including education and training, infrastructure, and resources and the environment. The ministers welcomed the establishment of the Australian-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership in September 2009 that elevated the bilateral relationship. The ministers noted the encouraging five-year trend growth in two-way goods and services trade, notwithstanding the decline in goods trade in 2009.
