Vietnamese student wins People’s Choice award at international graphic design contest

August 4, 2019 by e.vnexpress.net

Tenth grader Nguyen Thanh of Nguyen Tat Thanh High School in Hanoi beat 200,000 rivals from 20 nations worldwide to win the prize at the contest between July 28-31.

During the ACAWC 2019 final round, contestants competed in three design categories, including making a design for an Instagram post, a banner for an email and a poster themed “Giving Tuesday,” often stylized as #GivingTuesday for the purposes of hashtag activism, referring to the Tuesday after U.S. Thanksgiving in the U.S.

Since its inauguration in November 2012, Giving Tuesday has become a global movement to create an international day of charitable giving at the beginning of the Christmas and holiday season.

The first, second and third prizes were won by contestants from Macau, Peru and Sweden. They were chosen by a panel of judges and received respective cash prizes of $7,000, $3,500 and $1,500.

Vietnam sent three representatives this year, the second time it has participated in this contest.

The other two are college students. Along with Thanh, they were chosen from a national contest organized earlier this year by Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and IIG, an English-teaching organization working in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Launched in 2013, ACAWC is a global competition that identifies the next generation of design professionals using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign.

Organized by U.S.-based Certiport, a provider of learning curriculum, practice tests, and performance-based information-technology certification exams that accelerate academic and career opportunities for learners, the award is held annually for students aged between 13 and 22 around the world.

Mini wind kit, bird strike prevention designed for wind power generator

Mini wind kit, bird strike prevention designed for wind power generator

By Takeaki Uchida

Takeaki Uchida, CEO of ICM COMMUNICATIONS CO., LTD

According to IHS Markit, Vietnam is among the top three nations with the fastest growth of shift to renewable energy in the Asia Pacific after Australia and Japan.

I have traveled to several SEA countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, and found that Vietnam holds high potential for developing renewable energy such as solar, wind, biomass and wave.

So far, the proportion of solar power investment in Vietnam is so big. Meanwhile, wind power projects and capacity are not significant.

For solar power, in developing countries like Vietnam, investors are not keen on the ESS system that stores electricity for night use.

Instead, the Government of Vietnam encourages investors by offering a nice purchase price of electricity, and grid connection from household and factories who install the solar system (without ESS system).

For the solar system, you can install for household and factory use, and you can install mega farms and connect to the grid to sell electricity to EVN.

But for wind power, you can only install wind farms to sell electricity to EVN. The good point of wind power is that it generates power 24/7, unlike solar.

However, the popular wind turbine in the world is quite big (more than 2 megawatts). There is almost no mini wind turbine for household and factory use.

During my business life, I have invented (with registered patents in Japan) a wind power system called “mini wind power generator,” which has a capacity of a few hundred kilowatts to less than a megawatt.

I also invented the system that prevents bird strikes (registered patent in Japan). Indeed, at wind farms, bird-strikes create severe damages to the whole system.

I am working hard now with my Vietnamese partner, Pacific Group, to set up mini wind power generators and a system that prevents bird strikes.

I hope that my invention and investment in Vietnam will help the country exploit wind resources more efficiently. More families and factory owners can afford wind power for their daily use 24/7.

Dung Quat Refinery operates at 108 percent of design capacity

Hanoi (VNA) – Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical JSC (BSR) has operated Dung Quat Oil Refinery at 108 percent of its design capacity in a safe and stable fashion in February to meet the domestic market’s increasing demand during the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

According to BSR Deputy General Director Bui Ngoc Duong, thanks to the sound operation, the company was able to take advantage of an increase in prices of global crude oil, and better crack margin.

Flexible adjustments have been made to the Dung Quat Oil Refinery’s operation so as to optimise the output of RON 95, RON 92 and diesel, while reducing the amount of Jet-A1 fuel since demand for the fuel remained weak due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Duong added, with the regular maintenance of the plant, the refinery’s Energy Intensity Index (EII) reached 103 percent in the first two months, helping cutting energy consumption and production costs.

With a view to diversifying input materials at competitive prices for the Dung Quat Oil Refinery, the BSR tested two new kinds of crude oil, Qua Iboe of Nigeria and Cabinda of Angola.

Duong said the company is going to export 250 tonnes of Homo PP Yarn T3045. Earlier, it shipped 150 tonnes of Homo PP Yarn T3050 abroad, helping improve efficiency of production and business activities./.
