Vietnam’s shrimp exports expected to face fierce competition in next 3-5 years

CAN THO – Vietnam will face tough competition over shrimp exports from rivals such as Ecuador, India and Indonesia in the next three to five years if the shrimp farming and processing technology is not improved.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the VietShrimp Aquaculture International Fair on April 14 in Can Tho City, Le Van Quang, chairman of Minh Phu Seafood Corporation, often referred to as “the shrimp king”, said that over the past few years, despite modern technology applied to shrimp farming, the prices of Vietnamese shrimp had remained uncompetitive compared with those in Ecuador, India and Indonesia. The export price of Vietnam’s shrimp is 30% higher than that of the three countries.

Quang said that though Vietnam’s shrimp price was higher than that of these countries, Vietnam’s shrimp exports could compete with them, driven by modern shrimp processing technology.

However, the advantage of the technology might gradually fade as Ecuador, India and Indonesia are also improving their technology and can produce value-added products and instant food just like Vietnam.

As such, in the next three to five years, these countries will catch up with Vietnam in terms of the shrimp industry.

Besides, the salary of workers active in the shrimp sector in India is one third of that in Vietnam, resulting in the lower price of its shrimp.

If Vietnam does not improve its technology and adopt new solutions and access methods, the country’s shrimp sector will face fierce competition in the next few years, said Quang.

Nguyen Viet Thang, chairman of the Vietnam Fisheries Society, said that shrimp was the main export product among Vietnam’s seafood, with export revenue reaching US$3.8 billion last year. The shrimp sector has significantly contributed to the growth of Vietnam’s agriculture industry and created jobs for millions of workers in Vietnam, mainly in the Mekong Delta region.

In 2021, the shrimp sector targets to farm shrimp on an area of 740,000 hectares, obtain a shrimp yield of 930,000 tons and fetch a revenue of US$4 billion from shrimp exports, Thang said at the fair, which is set to wrap up on April 16.

CAAV proposes installing night lighting at Con Dao Airport

CAAV proposes installing night lighting at Con Dao Airport hinh anh 1 At the Con Dao Airport (Photo: VNA)

Hanoi (VNA) – The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has sent a document to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) proposing that research be made on the possibility of installing lights at Con Dao Airport in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau , to improve operational capacity.

The Con Dao Airport is located on Con Dao Island and investing in lighting for night operations is difficult due to weather and environmental conditions. As the airport is not permitted to operate 24 hours a day, flights only take off and land during the daytime.

According to the CAAV, this affects operational capacity at a time when Vietnamese carriers are opening more flights to Con Dao – one of the most beautiful and pristine islands in Vietnam.

A lighting system would therefore help the airport increase capacity, facilitating travel and promoting local socio-economic development.

FLC Group, the owner of Bamboo Airways, has proposed Ba Ria-Vung Tau province and the ACV approve funding for the installation of lights at the airport to allow it to increase flight capacity at night.

Two Vietnamese airlines currently conduct flights to Con Dao – Bamboo Airways and VASCO, an affiliate of Vietnam Airlines. Bamboo Airways conduct flights linking Con Dao with Hanoi, Hai Phong, Vinh in Nghe An province, and Ho Chi Minh City, while VASCO operates HCM City-Con Dao flights./.

Semiconductor crisis forces top-level action

The world’s semiconductor industry sales hit $40 billion for the month of January – a rise of 13.2 per cent on-year, revealed the Semiconductor Industry Association.

Now, consumers are having to deal with price hikes and a lack of products from automobiles and videogames to TVs and smartphones as a global shortage in semiconductors grows.

The shortage in chips, the so-called “brain” within every electronic device, has been slowly getting worse since last year, according to The Guardian. Temporary delays in supplies as factories shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic caused initial issues. However, although production is somewhat back to normal, surges in the demand driven by new habits stemming from the pandemic is causing the situation to worsen.

Mainly, a boom in sales of TVs and computers, the launch of brand new videogame consoles, and arrival of 5G-enabled mobile phones have all driven the demand.

The crisis has even affected Apple, the biggest buyer of semiconductors at $58 billion annually. It was forced to delay the launch of the iPhone 12 by two months last year as a result of the shortage.

“Chips are everything,” said Neil Campling, media and tech analyst at Mirabaud. “There is a perfect storm of supply and demand factors going on here. But there is a new level of demand that can’t be caught – everyone is in crisis and it is getting worse.”

In possibly the most shocking development, Samsung – the world’s second-largest buyer of chips – last month said it might have to postpone the launch of a high-end smartphone, despite also being the world’s second-largest producer of chips.

“It is incredible that Samsung sells $56 billion of semiconductors to others, and consumes $36 billion of them itself, finds it may have to delay the launch of one of its own products,” said Campling.

Ford meanwhile recently cancelled shifts at two car plants and said profits could be hit by up to $2.5 billion this year due to chip shortages, while Nissan is delaying output at plants in both the United States and Mexico. General Motors also said it could face a $2 billion profit hit.

In February Sony, which along with other console makers has struggled with stock shortages over the last year, said it might not hit sales targets for the new PlayStation 5 this year. Its rival, Microsoft’s Xbox, forecasts supply issues continuing at least until the second half of the year.

In a bid to unblock the jam, governments are now getting involved. CNBC reported a fortnight ago that US President Joe Biden is looking to place $37 billion into the sector in an attempt to lower America’s reliance on overseas supply chains. Biden said at the end of March, “We shouldn’t have to rely on a foreign country to provide for our people. We need to sharpen America’s competitive edge by investing here at home.”

But countries including the US and Germany have also reached out to Taiwan to help remove bottlenecks in production. Along with the pandemic, the new administration believes the semiconductor shortage was exacerbated by the previous president’s actions against China.

“Manufacturing of microelectronics in the US has reached a historic low, and this is a big problem for us,” said Terry Halvorsen, IBM’s general manager for Client and Solutions Development.

Taiwan dominates the outsourcing of semiconductor manufacturing. Its contract manufacturers together accounted for more than 60 per cent of total global revenues in the field in 2020, according to Taipei-based research firm TrendForce. Much of its dominance is due to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (TSMC), the world’s largest foundry. TSMC accounted for 54 per cent of all revenues via outsourcing of semiconductor manufacturing globally last year.

Dan Wang, a technology analyst at research firm Gavekal said, “Looking at market share, TSMC manufactures around 50 per cent of all semiconductors in the world – and I think that still understates how important it is because these are some of the most advanced chips out there.”

At the start of March, TSMC said it plans to invest $100 billion over the next three years to increase capacity. The move came after Intel Corporation’s announcement to spend $20 billion on the expansion of advanced chip-making capacity.

“Ultimately, securing the microelectronics supply chain of the US and its allies is a challenge they need to face now,” Halvorsen of IBM noted. “It’s the only way we can ensure sustainable long-term capability in this critically important area.”

The last big supply shock for the industry was a decade ago after the Fukushima earthquake damaged operations at Renesas Electronics, the number three supplier of auto chips.

National governance, public administration improve: PAPI report

April 14, 2021 by en.qdnd.vn

Since 2018, PAPI has been co-funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australia, the Embassy of Ireland and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Vietnam.

The report, which assessed citizen experiences with national and local government performance in governance, public administration, and public service delivery, showed that the Control of Corruption in the Public Sector dimension has improved significantly each year since 2016.

The dimension on Vertical Accountability Towards Citizens also steadily improved during the 2016-2021 term, mainly because an increasing number of citizens have contacted local officials, in particular village heads and People’s Council delegates.

Dimensions posting declines included Participation at Local Levels and Public Administrative Procedures.

“New features of the 2020 PAPI Report include insightful findings on the performance of local governments across two terms (2011-2016 and 2016-2021); experience of internal migrants with accessing services in receiving provinces; and voter perception of women in leadership roles,” UNDP Resident Representative in Vietnam Caitlin Wiesen said in her opening remark at the report launch.

“As the Government embarks on a new term, PAPI provides rich and deep datasets on citizens’ perception of local government achievement in each of the 63 provinces and important metrics to review and further improve their performance across eight key dimensions of governance,” she noted.

Analysis in the 2020 PAPI Report shows that citizen engagement and anti-corruption efforts have a positive correlation with Vietnam’s ability to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Robyn Mudie, acknowledged an improvement in provincial governance and public administration performance, which may have contributed to Vietnam’s successful response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Findings from the 2020 PAPI Report show that there is a correlation between good governance and effective pandemic responses, she added.

Nguyen Huu Dung, Vice President of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front said he hope that PAPI will continue to serve as a reliable policy monitoring tool that helps promote government accountability and reforms, thereby furthering modern governance.

Over 14,700 citizens were interviewed for the 2020 PAPI Report. This is the largest number of citizens to participate since the survey was first conducted nationwide in 2011. For the first time, the survey also gathered responses from citizens with temporary residence registration status. Nearly 300 migrants were surveyed in six centrally governed municipalities and provinces (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Bac Ninh, Da Nang, Dong Nai and Binh Duong).
