Tet Holidays: Four reasons for a shopping staycation in Saigon

August 2, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

Tet is coming. Where is the best accommodation for shopping trips on the year’s biggest sales season in Saigon?

An unprecedented year deserves an unprecedented shopping experience. Have you ever thought of a shopping staycation to contemplate over an authentic Saigon as local migrants are coming home for Tet? If so, where could be the ideal destination?

On the occasion of the Lunar New Year, some hotels in Ho Chi Minh city have promotional prices for their room rates. Centrally located in the District 1, the Odys Boutique Hotel is offering a special price for its Superior room at only VND800,000 (US$34) per room per night with breakfast.

Saigon Tourist offers an accommodation voucher program for Tet at a preferential price of only VND899,000 (US$35) per room for two people including breakfast. The voucher can be redeemed to one-night-stay at three 5-star hotels of Majestic, Rex and Grand or two night-night-stays at 4-star hotels of Kim Do and De Nhat (The First) hotels.

Shopping

Talking about shopping is talking about District 1 – where all the popular shopping malls gather. From the most high-end brands to outlet goods and limited local boutique brands, just one stroll across District 1’s biggest shopping malls - Sai Gon Centre – Takashimaya, Saigon Garden on Nguyen Hue Walking Street, Vincom Dong Khoi, Diamond Plaza and Saigon Square – is enough to update your Tet wardrobe with all the latest fashion trends of the year.

Eats & treats

A shopping spree can quickly empty both your wallet and stomach. Since it was founded, District 1 has always been Saigon’s  tourist magnet.

If the current restrictions bother your inner wanderlust, try a trip around the world’s cuisine around Saigon, from authentic Chinese restaurants, Japanese ramen restaurants along Le Thanh Ton street, to Korean BBQ restaurants Q, Italian Pizza and Pasta restaurant and all the affordable Vietnamese street food at the underground Asiana Food Town. The world is right at your front door.

Exploring

District 1 is not only a shopping and eating destination. Do you know that Ben Nghe area – the Ben Thanh market – is the heart of Saigon since the Indochina era?

This South-East Asia cultural and historical journey can be wrapped up within a convenient half-day walking tour starting from the centre of the district. Being the international trading port over the last 300 years, District 1 inherits many remnants of the cultural melting pot which mixed together Vietnamese, Chinese, Khmer, Champa, Indian, and of course, French cultures through all the colonial architectures scattering across the city.

Relaxing

Right at the heart of District 1 is a “resort oasis” where you can loosen down and step right into a state of tranquility. A living-art retrogressing experience back to a Vietnamese affluent life during Saigon’s Indochina past.

The hotels which are located in the heart of the district are the perfect choices of accommodations for a year-end shopping staycation.

Located at the heart of District 1, only 5-minute walk from the shopping malls and Bitexco Financial Tower, you can pass by the hotel to rest or leave your shopping bags amid the exhilarating Tet shopping spree.

The Bitexco cafe at the 52nd of Bitexco Financial Tower is also a good choice for your staycation holidays in Saigon. Photo: Bitexco Financial Tower.

Another 10-minute walk to the underground Asiana Food Town and Bui Vien Walking street, you can explore the world’s cooking  and content your stomach.

Not a fan of long walks? Guests who stay at the hotels in District 1 might order dinners right at the hotels they stayed. One of the good choices would be an exclusive fusion menu that is prepared by 5-star Chef at Bup Restaurant & Sky Lounge.

Tet is a time to reconnect with Saigon. And the peaceful city during Tet is perfect for travellers and their families to plan a staycation during this season.

Singapore swap shops offer alternative to fast fashion

February 15, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

Singaporean Sue-Anne Chng used to wear a different outfit on all 15 days of the Lunar New Year, when it is customary to don new clothes to symbolise a fresh start.

But this year she will wear second-hand items exchanged for her old clothes at a store catering to people concerned about the impact of fast fashion on the environment.

Several swapping initiatives, from permanent shops to pop-up events, have appeared in the affluent city-state in a bid to encourage consumers to make the most of what is already in their closets.

The fashion industry is responsible for up to a tenth of global carbon emissions, according to the United Nations’ environment programme.

Clothes cause emissions in a wide variety of ways — from their manufacture to transportation and washing by the consumer.

On a recent trip to her favourite store, The Fashion Pulpit, Chng took along several dresses and a matching blouse and skirt, which a staff member assessed before crediting points to her account.

She spent her points on 17 items, including a yellow and green dress to wear for the first day of the new year as it looked like “an auspicious pineapple”.

The fruit, seen as a symbol of prosperity, is typically given as a gift or displayed during Lunar New Year in Singapore.

‘Insane consumption’

“I’ve always been brought up by my parents to have a new set of clothes every [Lunar New Year], and I fell into that behaviour of consumerism,” the 35-year-old told AFP.

“In the past I probably made sure I have 15 days of outfits even if I’m not visiting (relatives), which is too much.”

But now, “as long as the item is new to me, I think it’s good enough,” added Chng, who works for a tech company and is married.

Chng first learnt about clothes swapping at a work event five years ago, and decided to change her ways after realising her wardrobe was filled with unworn items.

“Prior to switching over to swapping, my consumption habit was insane,” she said.

“I realised I had more than 50 percent of my wardrobe unworn, but I still felt like I didn’t have anything to wear.”

She pays Sg$599 (US$450) for a yearly membership at The Fashion Pulpit, which allows her unlimited swaps and visits — about 80 percent of her wardrobe is now from the shop.

“Swapping allows me to be like a chameleon when it comes to fashion but allows me to be environmentally conscious as well,” she said.

Tiny Singapore alone produced 168,000 tonnes of textile and leather waste in 2019, according to authorities — the weight of more than 400 Boeing 747 planes.

‘Not dirty, not dusty’

Filipino clothes designer Raye Padit founded The Fashion Pulpit nearly three years ago after learning about his industry’s impact on the environment and poor treatment of garment workers.

“In Singapore, the problem is overconsumption and waste,” he told AFP.

“We want to provide a platform where you can still dress up, express yourself… through clothes. But at the same time, it’s not damaging to the planet and to your wallet.”

His company now has more than 1,500 members and has started turning a profit. It also holds workshops where customers can learn how to mend or upcycle used clothes.

People have swapped everything from casual clothes made by high-street brands to top-end items such as Prada bags and Louboutin shoes, Padit said.

One-time swap events are also popping up in the city-state while a group of volunteers host monthly swap gatherings.

“When I join a clothing swap it reminds me to consume consciously because when I give away clothes, I think about whether I’m still wearing them,” said Nadia Kishlan, a 30-year-old participant at one clothing swap.

Challenges remain in persuading Singaporeans to swap rather than shop, however, and the city’s industry is still in its infancy.

Second-hand shops are not as popular in Asia as in the West, in part because many believe used clothes from strangers could bring bad luck, or be unhygienic.

But Padit said attitudes in Singapore were changing, driven by rising environmental awareness and a wave of trendy new thrift shops marketing their goods on social media.

“It’s slowly changing the perception of what second hand is all about,” he said.

“It’s no longer dirty, it’s no longer dusty — it’s a cool thing.”

Hanoi develops outlet malls to promote trade and tourism

December 17, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – The capital will pay attention to developing outlet malls and promote investment in large-scale outlet centers.

Developing large-scale outlet malls in Hanoi would boost manufacture and sale in the context of the stagnant economy and trade activities as the results of  Covid-19, according to Hanoi authority.

Though factory stores are popular to shoppers in the US, Europe and other countries. Hanoi, home to major garment and textile businesses, has still not seen any large outlet mall. Hanoi Party Secretary Vuong Dinh Hue recently asked the city’s authorities to consider developing factory stores and lure investment in large-scale outlet malls.

Being of the same opinion, President of the Vietnam Association of Retailers Vu Thi Hau, said that factory stores would benefit both businesses and consumers. “Although the items sold at the point of sale are mainly outdated or with minor defects, they are from well-known fashion brands and could be sold at prices between 30% and 80% cheaper,” she said. “Many customers still prefer defective items sold in factory stores because of their cheap price but good quality.”

In Hanoi, the first outlet stores were open in 2012 but then closed after the short time in operation. Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, owner of an outlet shop in Chua Boc street, Hanoi, who had given up selling defective branded fashion said that most of the items were 50% to 70% cheaper than the price of the fine items. However, he had to struggle to compete with other fashion stores by offering many promotion programs such as discounts and gifts, leading to no profit.

The reason why the outlet stores could not survive is the lack of diversification. The outlet shops only sell items of one or brands and such poor offer is not appealing to customers, Deputy Director of the Domestic Markets Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade Le Viet Nga said. In addition, misunderstanding about the outlet business model has led to loss of interest among Vietnamese consumers, she added.

Local retail expert Vu Vinh Phu added that Vietnamese people prefer to buy fashion brought from abroad, although the origin and quality are sometimes not as verifiable as that of outlet products sold in Vietnam.

Managing Director of CBRE Vietnam Marc Townsend said that for outlet stores to be successful, there should be large outlet malls with cheap rental space.

“If businesses choose to invest in small outlets in prime locations of Hanoi, it will reduce business efficiency and it is difficult to stay firm,” Mr. Townsend said.

Covid-19 boosts online shopping for Tet

February 7, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – E-commerce floors have pre-stocked goods and integrated new technology for online shopping activities.

Covid-19 has beefed up online shopping for the Tet holiday as it is the time when Vietnamese consumers spend the most throughout year.

Ms. Thu Hang, an accountant from Techcombank in Hanoi, is busier than usual with financial settlements at the end of the year, and online shopping on e-commerce sites is a salvage solution for her to prepare for Tet , especially in the context of the outbreak of Covid-19.

Tet on e-commerce sites

This year, Tet items such as kitchen guard meat, dried bamboo shoots, mushrooms, sausages, and clean food are more available on e-market than the previous year at the convenience of local consumers like Ms. Thu Hang. Many retailers have offered more promotions and diverse products with reasonable prices.

In order to meet the demand of online shopping during the Lunar New Year, e-commerce floors have pre-stocked goods and integrated new technology for online shopping activities.

Compared to the previous Tet holiday, Tiki, a Vietnamese online marketplace, increased at least its goods supply by 30%, focusing on packaged food, beverages, nutritional products, milk, spices.

“We expect sales in this year’s Lunar New Year at Tiki will grow up to 70% over the same period last year”, a representative from Tiki said.

Shopee, owned by Singapore-based tech group Sea, has worked with its vendors, brands and shipping partners to launch a new program for Tet delivery during the Lunar New Year.

Traditional retailers go online

Brick-and-mortar retailers such as Saigon Co.op, Big C and Megamarket have turned to their websites and apps to stimulate consumption . Co.opmart supermarkets saw an increase of 30-40% in online orders in recent days. Sales of Tet gift baskets through e-retailing have increased by 200% compared to the same period last year.

Hanoi Trade Corporation (Hapro) in cooperation with BRG Retail has promoted online shopping channel through its BRG Shopping app and Facebook fanpage, according to Deputy General Director of Hapro Do Tue Tam.

According to a representative of BigC/GO!, the supermarket chain also receives orders via Zalo and offer free delivery during this Tet season, in addition to receiving orders by phone and website as usual.

“Covid-19 has created an opportunity for businesses to boost the process of digital transformation, including online sales. We believe that this year’s Lunar New Year will see a boom in online shopping,” Mr. Nguyen Anh Duc, General Director of Saigon Co.op, said.
