Vietnam confirms seven new Covid-19 cases

All five local cases, numbered 2478-2482, were already quarantined when detected with the novel coronavirus.

The two imported cases, patients 2476 and 2477, are women aged 23 in Ho Chi Minh City. They had been quarantined February 28 on entering the country via the Ha Tien International Border Gate in the southern province of Kien Giang.

With three cases in the morning, Vietnam recorded 10 new cases Wednesday. The number of community transmissions since January 28 is now at 870, led by Hai Duong with 689 cases, followed by Quang Ninh (61), HCMC (36) and Hanoi (35).

Ten of the localities have gone nearly 20 days without any local transmission, including HCMC and Quang Ninh, and the latter reopened its Van Don International Airport Wednesday.

The national Covid-19 tally stands at 2,482, with 1,898 recoveries and 35 deaths. Among the active patients, 216 people have tested negative for the virus at least once.

Covid-19 has claimed nearly 2.5 million lives globally.

Seven French movies screened in Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese audiences will have an opportunity to enjoy seven classic and modern French movies to be screened in Vietnam from March 1 to December 31.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has granted permission for the screening of the French movies throughout the country.

The films will be screened in 10 cities and provinces nationwide, including Hanoi, Hai Phong, Thai Nguyen, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Lao Cai, Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat, and Can Tho.

The Ministry noted that screening s will only take place once the COVID-19 pandemic has fully been brought under control in localities. Relevant preventive measures must also be observed./.

Royal sisters movie gets release date after pandemic delay

HCM CITY — The fifth edition in a series of chick-flick movies will be released in cinemas nationwide next week, after being delayed due to the COVID-19 resurgence earlier this year.

Gái Già Lắm Chiêu V – Những Cuộc Đời Vương Giả (Camellia Sisters – Living Like Royalty) will premiere on March 12, a month after the original date of February 12, the first lunar day of the Year of the Ox.

With the pandemic controlled in much of Viet Nam , the producer MAR6 Pictures feels ready to release the movie in cinemas safely.

“Changing the film release date was a difficult decision because it disturbed the original plan, but we want to keep the audience safe and decide to delay until the viewers can safely go to the theatre to enjoy the movie,” said director Bảo Nhân.

Gái Già Lắm Chiêu V – Những Cuộc Đời Vương Giả is the fifth edition of the chick-flick series called Gái Già Lắm Chiêu (The Tricky Ladies) that was launched in 2016 by young directors Bảo Nhân and Nam Cito.

The third edition on the relationship between a woman and her mother-in-law, played by Lê Khanh and Lan Ngọc, recorded revenue of VND165 billion (US$7 million) and is one of the top 10 highest-grossing Vietnamese films of all time.

The fifth edition features late actor Hoàng Dũng in the role of wealthy Vĩnh Nghị. The film was the last he took part in before dying on February 14 from blood cancer.

Director Bảo Nhân said during the filming period, Dũng endured pain to complete the scenes. His first segment in the film was on Thiên An Hill, requiring Hoàng Dũng to ride a bicycle for many hours at night. After the filming was done, he gasped due to exhaustion.

The main filming location was a white tea garden within an ancient villa and cost more than VND2 billion ($87,000) to set up the European-style garden.

The movie was also filmed in many famous destinations in Huế in an effort to promote the beauty of local culture, tourism as well as the history of the city.

Other well-known artists also contributed to the movie, including famous designer Đỗ Mạnh Cường who worked as the fashion director and singer Bùi Lan Hương who performed the soundtrack.

Camellia Sisters – Living Like Royalty focuses on the three Lý sisters belonging to the Huế aristocracy. Three famous actresses, Lê Khanh, Hồng Vân and Kaity Nguyễn, play the three sisters.

People’s Artist Lê Khanh plays Lý Lệ Hà – the scheming eldest sister in the family with a long history of collecting antiques. To look different from her role as the mother-in-law Thái Tuyết Mai in the third edition, she cut her long hair that she had grown for more than 20 years.

People’s Artist Hồng Vân, as the second eldest sister Lý Lệ Hồng is talkative, seemingly carefree but knows a lot of family secrets. She also starred in the third edition.

Kaity Nguyễn, after the big success of Tiệc Trăng Máu (Blood Moon Party) is the youngest sister, Lý Linh.

With such a lineup of big names on the silver screen, the movie is anticipated to be a bit hit and possibly surpass the success of the third edition. — VNS

UNESCO-recognised Hue relic site attracts visitors on Lunar New Year’s Day

Due to the complicated developments of the fresh coronavirus outbreak, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center has postponed several royal court games, along with cultural and artistic activities. Coming to the site, visitors are required to abide by COVID-19 preventive measures such as wearing face masks and washing their hands with sanitiser.

As part of the occasion, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center is free to all domestic guests who visit Hue’s relic site from the first to the third day of the Lunar New Year.

A local visitor to the Hue Imperial Citadel (Dai Noi) notes that it is common for people to visit traditional places such as pagodas or temples during the opening days of the Lunar New Year. The Hue relic complex is one of the favourite destinations for visitors, especially young people who want to get to know about the country’s traditional culture.

HCMC – The Health Ministry has confirmed seven fresh Covid-19 patients, including two imported cases quarantined in Kien Giang Province and five locally-infected ones in Hai Duong Province, sending Vietnam’s caseload to 2,482 as of this evening, March 3.

The two imported cases are local residents of HCMC, both aged 23. The two women entered the Ha Tien international border gate in Kien Giang on February 28 and were quarantined upon their arrival. They are under treatment at the Ha Tien City Medical Center in this Mekong Delta province.

The five cases in Hai Duong, which is now the country’s biggest coronavirus hotspot, were linked to previously confirmed Covid-19 patients and had been placed in quarantine before. They are being treated at Covid-19 field hospitals in the northern province.

Up to now, the country has reported 1,566 locally-transmitted cases, with 873 recorded since January 27.

Data from the ministry showed that 1,898 coronavirus patients in the country have fully recovered, while fatalities stayed at 35.

HCMC – The consultant of the national airport development plan in the 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2050 has proposed that new airport projects should not be added to the airport system by 2030 already approved by the prime minister as too many provinces have proposed developing airports.

By 2050, the consultant proposed developing only Cao Bang airport, the local media reported.

Based on the economic efficiency of the operational airports and the experience of other countries, the consultant has listed out six main criteria for the necessity and feasibility of new airports, comprising demand, contribution to socioeconomic development, national defense and emergency, natural conditions and their distance to central urban areas and adjacent airports.

Based on these criteria, the consultant concluded that with 28 airports approved by the prime minister, 96% of Vietnam’s population can access airports within a distance of 100 kilometers, higher than the world’s average of 75%.

The Ministry of Transport is consulting other relevant ministries, agencies and localities over the plan.

Over the past few months, Binh Phuoc and Bac Giang have suggested developing their military airports into those used for both civil and military purposes, while Ninh Binh and Ha Giang have suggested building new airports.

In 2020, the Ministry of Transport also received proposals to develop airports in Cao Bang, Ha Tinh, Ninh Thuan and Bac Lieu provinces which argued that the airport development would serve the socioeconomic development and ensure national defense.

At present, the residents of these provinces use the airports of neighboring provinces within a distance of 70 to 150 kilometers. For example, it is some 120 kilometers from Ninh Binh to the Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi and nearly 100 kilometers to the Tho Xuan Airport in Thanh Hoa and the Cat Bi Airport in Haiphong.

The distance from Binh Phuoc to the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in HCMC is also nearly 130 kilometers.

Associate Professor Nguyen Thien Tong from the HCMC University of Technology said provinces should develop small airports for small aircraft with less than 20 seats for rescue, national defense and tourism. They can take advantage of old military airports and call on private firms to get involved in these projects.

However, policies to encourage air carriers to operate small aircraft should be issued first.

Among the 22 operational airports across the country, only six airports have reported profits, including Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat, Danang, Cam Ranh, Lien Khuong and Phu Bai.

According to Tran Quang Chau, chairman of the Vietnam Association on Aviation Science and Technology, compared with other countries in the region and the world, the number of civil airports in Vietnam is small and provinces’ proposals to develop airports are legitimate.

However, the development of new airports should be based on many criteria and suit the country’s airport system.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nguyen Bach Tung, an aviation expert, said most of local airports have yet to reach their full capacities. Therefore, the investment in new airports should be weighed carefully. The competent agencies should consider many factors before deciding if new airports should be built.
