Hanoi charity’s young volunteers spend nights rescuing homeless children

January 27, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

When Hoang Anh was cruising around flower gardens in Hanoi’s Tay Ho District at around midnight one day, he saw two boys in warm clothes and a middle-aged man sitting around a fire and decided to approach them.

At first glance the man looked like their father. But noticing that the boys seem tired, Anh and a friend decided to walk over and say hello.

“Can we sit here and talk to you guys?” he asked, and they looked up at him with suspicion.

Sitting down next to the fire, Anh looked at the two boys and said: “It is such a chilly night. Do you guys need any help?”

The boys, one skinny and the other chubby, remained silent while the man abruptly stood up, said he was taking his dog for a walk, and left.

Anh tried to make friends with the children and introduced himself.

“We belong to the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, which helps homeless children. I can help you guys find accommodation and a place to play football and get health checks. It is unsafe for you to be out this late at night since there are many bad people on the streets.”

He told them about some of the situations he had seen and warned them of the dangers lurking on the streets, and showed some pictures of the street children he had helped.

After seeing there were some kids they knew in the pictures and his friendly way of speaking, the boys gradually lowered their guard and opened up.

The skinny one said his identification papers had been stolen when he was sleeping in the garden a few days ago. Now he could not find a job, but still did not want to go back to his hometown. The other, who was 14 years old, said he was from the northern Bac Kan Province and his father was in prison.

Anh said: “I can help you guys find a safe place to sleep tonight. If you don’t like it, I can bring you back here.”

But they had been living on the street for long, and their survival instincts possibly kicked in, and they refused his offer immediately.

He then gave them some money to find a place to sleep and his contact information and told them to meet him at the same place the next morning.

The chubby boy turned up the next morning, and Anh took him to the foundation. He can decide to stay there with other similar children if he likes it or go and live with a foster family.

Anh, 27, is the captain of the street outreach team at the Hanoi-based charity that has been assisting children in crises since 2003.

The team goes out into the streets every night to look for destitute children under bridges and in parks, bus stations and other places.

It has seven members and a large support staff. In addition to its main task of finding homeless children, the team also helps children living at the charity’s boarding houses and organizes physical activities and health checks for them.

The team members also take street children back to their homes.

The main aim is to ensure destitute children are not dragged into committing crimes and are safe from bad influences.

Earlier that night Anh and his colleague had gone to four Internet cafes in nearby My Dinh in Nam Tu Liem District to look for children and told the owners to let them know if they come across children who need assistance.

Here they gave a jacket to a boy who had run away from home in another province.

“Many homeless children from other provinces show up around the My Dinh area, especially during summer and around Lunar New Year,” Anh says.

“They are easy prey for pedophiles and job brokers. Since they have just arrived in the capital and have a little money and tend go to Internet cafes to play games.

“We always try to reach the children before they encounter bad people.”

After three years as a member of the street outreach team, Doan Cong thinks he is doing a “meaningful” job.

One day late at night in August he and his colleague Minh Hai spotted two children sitting at a bus stop near the My Dinh bus station and a middle-aged man hovering over them.

Since the children looked tired and wore stained, tattered clothes, Cong decided they were not familiar with the city. He parked his vehicle and approached them.

He found out that the boys, aged 15 and 17, had left their hometown in Ha Giang Province and worked for half a month in Hanoi before their employer closed down due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Both had used up their wages of VND400,000 ($17.30) while searching for new jobs, but had not been lucky.

After roaming the streets for three days, they ended up at the bus station.

They looked at the man and whispered to Cong: “He told us he would give us each VND100,000 if we touch his genitals. We refused, but he was insistent and is waiting for us to change our minds.”

Cong and Hai took the boys to an Internet shop, got them food and told them to spend the night there. The next morning Cong returned, reassured that their families had promised to pick them up after he had informed them.

He gave the pair some money and his contact information in case they needed help.

The young social workers have had to confront dubious people to protect homeless children. Two months ago Anh had to fight off two pedophiles who were asking three boys to go home and sleep with them.

Minh Hai, who has been on the team for two years, shares a story from last winter. One night, on a curb behind the My Dinh bus station, he saw a boy with a backpack and a cap who looked he had little strength left. He got off his motorbike and slowly walked up to the boy.

He asked him: “You look tired. Have you had dinner?”

The boy looked scared, and his eyes kept darting around.

After he walked behind him for around two kilometers, the boy became less scared of him. Hai gave him a box of sticky rice and the boy gulped it down.

After eating he revealed that he had been lured into a debt collection gang about a month ago. He was instructed to work out to look strong and go collect debts.

He managed to escape from that gang, but was now afraid its members would catch with him and mete out punishment. He also did not know where to go or who to ask for help.

On average, the street outreach team helps around 100 children each year. Many of the children have returned to their families or have been put in school. Many of them now work at restaurants or hotels, in tourism and others.

About 10 percent of Blue Dragon’s workers were themselves children rescued by the charity. Having been there before, now they help children who are in a similar situation.

Anh says: “I think my job is like that of a filter: kids we rescue have the ability to rebuild their lives, but if we do not, they are easily caught up in bad situations.”

Recently the two boys from Ha Giang called Cong to say they had returned home and work in the fields with their parents, and are waiting until they are old enough to get proper works.

The team members say there are always children being pushed out into the streets for various reasons, and there are many traps awaiting them. That is why the team has been out on the streets for the last 17 years.

Blue Dragon has helped 607 street children reunite with their families, rescued 1,000 trafficked kids and helped 5,259 children go to school or get jobs.

12-year-old girl allegedly tortured by mother, raped by latter’s boyfriend in Hanoi

February 21, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

A Hanoi woman has been probed for torturing her own daughter, while her boyfriend investigated for raping the young girl.

Police in Ha Dong District, Hanoi on Sunday arrested and initiated legal proceedings against Hoang Thi Thu Huyen, 34, for torturing her daughter and Pham Thanh Tung, 31, for raping an under-16-year-old person.

The arrest was previously approved by the Ha Dong District People’s Procuracy.

Tung was taken into custody for four months to facilitate the investigation, while Huyen was released on bail to be able to raise her young child.

The woman was also indicted for illegal trade of narcotics in a separate case.

According to preliminary information, Huyen lives with her 12-year-old daughter H.H.B. and a younger son at their home in Ha Dong District.

Tung is Huyen’s boyfriend and has stayed at Huyen’s place since early 2020.

The two recently had a son, who is currently about one month old.

From May 2020 to January 2021, Tung forced B. to have sex with him on multiple occasions when Huyen was not at home.

The man threatened to beat the young girl if she tried to resist or tell other people.

B. also said her mother often hit her with water pipes, electric wires, or bamboo sticks whenever she was disobedient.

Huyen was aware that B. was raped by Tung, but that was just another reason for her to continue torturing B., the victim stated.

On January 25, B.’s aunt acknowledged the incidents and decided to take B. and her younger stepbrother home for further care.

The case was also reported to police officers.

According to B.’s aunt, Huyen has had five children with five different men. She was only legally married to the first man.

Further investigation is ongoing.

Young man and his splendid home-based antique exhibition

December 2, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

Mr. Nguyen Tan Hieu, 34, in Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city has acquired a collection of around 200 valuable vintage cassettes, radios, and over 100 old kerosene lamps.

The much-admired collection on display in every nook of Hieu’s house.

The vast array of antiques captures the attention of passersby despite the house being located in a little alley on Bui Huu Nghia street (Binh Thuy district).

The majority of cassette players and radios here date back to a few decades ago, even more than half a century, but are still surprisingly new-looking and functional.

To demonstrate, Hieu even switched on VOV1 (Voice of Vietnam) channel from a radio produced in the 1950-1960s, and the sound was strikingly smooth and clear.

The quirky perennial machines originating in Japan, the US … from big brands like National, Panasonic, and Sony were all manufactured between 1955 and 1975.

Many phonographs, vinyl records and other items. From all over the country also massively contribute to Hieu’s captivating collection which he has sweated blood for.

Mr. Hieu remarked that though modern electronic audio equipment is of very high quality, the retro style machines, particularly the signature sound produced from vintage cassette players, for ever has his heart.

Radio and cassette players obtained by the sweat of Hieu’s brow.

“I have been passionate about collecting cassettes since I was a school boy. Back then before the digital age took over, people listened to music via cassettes or radio stations, which I feel immensely nostalgic for. Even a simple dysfunction calling a halt to my contemplation could completely cast a shadow over my day,” Hieu recalled.

The devotion he has to classical cassette players burgeons every passing day, so handsomely that it became a part of him, making him expend his energy and effort into seeking further and further.

“I was initially only choosing ones with clear sound and durability, but later on set the bar higher to items of rarity and colour/model variations, ” he added.

Hieu prioritizes rare and even unused items.

Many machines in his home-based exhibition are original and neatly boxed. Some of them can be badly damaged, which may sometimes cost him the earth to get them overhauled.

Circuit error is the most common problem among the cassette players and radios when found.

Even when functional, maintenance, frequent cleaning, board waterproofing, and non exposure to direct sunlight are all indispensable for these items.

Inco Mica cassette radio manufactured between 1955 and 1963 is considered a one-off in Hieu’s collection.

“This is the most special cassette player that I could find across the whole nation. It cost up to VND25 million and is fully intact and operational. Its model is among the most exclusive and elite up to this point in the world of vintage cassettes,” Mr. Hieu said.

Hieu also owns more than 100 Kim Loi Hoa kerosene lamps. The lilac one is regarded as the rarest in the collection. Akai vinyl record players, old televisions, southern pottery …are all intriguing.

Hieu’s Kim Loi Hoa oil lamps.

Mr. Huynh Dang (35 years old, Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city): “I am also a cassette player and radio maniac. It’s undeniable how profoundly the collection left me bedazzled upon my first visit. It definitely is the finest in Can Tho.”

The land of statues

February 15, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

Daily at the cock’s crow, when everyone is still snuggled up in their cozy beds, a man is busy using well-worn wooden moulds and clay to make traditional Kitchen God statues.

Dia Linh village (Huong Vinh commune, Huong Tra town, Thua Thien – Hue province) has long been known as the traditional land for sculpting Land Genie and Kitchen God (Stove God) statues for Vietnamese Kitchen guardian day on the 23rd of December (lunar calendar).

Along the paths across Bao Vinh old town approaching Lunar New Year, there are many raw statues basking in the sun getting ready to be baked. The sound of knockings on the moulds rings out evenly, covering the whole village in a festive atmosphere. This sight is incredible to behold at the very entrance. Land genie and Stove God statues, after going through firing process, will then be colored by skillful hands, smoothly and rhythmically.

Sitting in a corner of the house is a 64-year-old man diligently putting the clay in wooden moulds of Land Genie and Kitchen God shape. To avoid concavity, the moulds need filling with a generous amount of clay. Any excess afterwards is wiped off the edge. Stickiness is avoided during the shaping process by sprinkling some ash on the templates rather than just placing the damp clay in. The man next settles the raw products on red bricks so that water can easily be drawn out before sun drying. At day’s end, the average number of statues he can produce is around 300.

His name is Vo Van Nhat, now already 70 years old. Time has flown since the day he started his father’s profession at the age of 25. Half a lifetime went by in just a blink of an eye. A young man until this day, he’s carried on the tradition as part of his means of living.

The village elders say the village in the past was renowned for its abundance of clay. During Nguyen Dynasty, the place specialized in manufacturing products to supply for the construction of mausoleums for kings in Hue. The profession of statue craft was then created.

The chief material of the process is clay which is obtained from the fertile fields behind the village or bought elsewhere. From March of the lunar calendar, craftsmen start to prepare clay by kneading it until smooth and flexible. A batch of statues becoming finished requires about two days in the kiln, and another two more days for cooling.

“The most significant and strenuous phase to make certain a successful outcome is clay processing and moulding. Clay with the least impurities is a must, the same with kneading it to a desired pliability and sufficient pressure whilst moulding to keep the statues neatly in shape later on.  Mould lining should beforehand be done with white ash,” Mr. Nhat shared.

Land Genie and Stove God statue making gets the most hectic during later months when Lunar New Year is on its way. There are countless products Mr Nhat has made on his own during around 40 years in this profession.

Keeping tradition alive

Opposite to Mr. Nhat’s house is Mr. Vo Van Nam’s family, the members of which also have over 30 years of statue crafts.

“The process of placing statues in the kiln requires meticulousness. More than a thousand statues are arranged in rows with proper gaps maintained for the fire to burn evenly, to avoid cracks when heated,” said Mr. Nam.

Previously, statues were barely decorated. However, to match consumers’ tastes nowadays, they after cooling are brilliantly colored or sprinkled with eye-catching glitter powder.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh (28 years old, Mr Nhat’s daughter-in-law) said that people do not earn much from this job since the products are sold at very low price ranging 500-2000 VND, which for craftsmen is just enough to make ends meet.

“VND100,000 is the average we make for a whole day. In comparison with other works, it is low-paid, but with burning passion, many families in the village still want to keep the tradition alive,” Ms. Linh said.

The elders in Dia Linh village shared that Land Genie and Stove God statue making was first present in Thua Thien – Hue including Dia Linh village and Sinh village (Phu Vang district). Sinh village later shifted to making only votive offerings.

More and more households in the village are leaving the statue making tradition and seeking new ways to make their living because it demands a long day work alongside low income. There are now only four households engaging in the occupation giving rise to a fading culture of statue craft.

The profession generally reflects traditional values of the past and cultural beauty that’s worth breathing life into.
