The art of motorbike repairs in Vietnam
Well you got caught with a flat? Well, how 'bout that Well babies, don't you panic By the light of the night, it'll all seem alright I'll get you a Satanic mechanic (Lyrics from the Rocky Horror Show) You hear that chunk and feel the dump and know you’re in trouble. Yes, it’s that wonderful time when you get a flat tire and need to find the repair shop pronto. Murphy’s Law (anything that can go wrong will go wrong!) applies here: 1) it nearly always happens when you are the furthest away from a repair shop; 2) it will happen when you are in a hurry to get somewhere; or 3) just when you’ve achieved that perfect mood to get through the day… (A note for English learners – ‘tire’ is used in America and Canada, however most of the rest of the world spells it ‘tyre’ – the rubber outside part of a wheel.) Vietnam visa policy rebuffs foreign retirees’ love
Peter Zimmermann from Germany said he and his wife have been coming to Vietnam for 5-6 months every winter since 2013 and they always rented a house or a large apartment in the beach town of Nha Trang. "Vietnam is really an excellent place to live as a retiree as local people are open and very friendly. There are good hotels, resorts, restaurants, cafes and apartments. Great beaches by the sea and lots of culture and history to discover," he told VnExpress International . However, current visa policies remain a major barrier for pensioners looking to settle down in Vietnam because the country has not resumed its pre-pandemic visa policies. Apart from granting visa exemption to 24 tourism markets for stays of 15-30 days, Vietnam only issues a one-month single-entry e-visa to visitors from other countries, instead of the three-month multi-entry visas it used to issue. "It is not reasonable for pensioners like us to leave the country every 30 days and return with a new … [Read more...] about Vietnam visa policy rebuffs foreign retirees’ love
Pot-smoking tourists not welcome in Thailand, says health minister
Thailand's health minister on Wednesday discouraged tourists from visiting the country only to smoke weed, just two months after new laws were passed that have largely decriminalised the drug. "We don't welcome those kinds of tourists," Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters when asked about recreational marijuana use among foreign visitors. In 2018, Thailand became the first Southeast Asian country to legalise cannabis for medical use. In June, the entire plant was decriminalised, leading to widespread recreational use. Despite the government's pleas against getting high, cannabis businesses with special smoking rooms have been a hit with locals and visitors. But those smoking in public risk facing a three-month jail sentence or fines of up to 25,000 baht ($705.82). Anutin's comments come even as foreign arrivals start to pick up in the tourism-reliant country. Southeast Asia's second-largest economy expects 8 million to 10 million arrivals this year, above an earlier forecast … [Read more...] about Pot-smoking tourists not welcome in Thailand, says health minister
Vietnam chess ace takes down world champion
After losing the first two rounds against the world top six including Levon Aronian and Alireza Firouzja, Liem finally got his first win. Duda, the 2021 FIDE World Cup champion, let Liem claim victory in two games and only managed a draw. In the first game, Liem played white and lost a pawn in mid game. But he was able to trap his opponent’s queen and gain the upper hand, then converted his advantage to a victory. Duda went all out in the second game when he put his knight on the line from the opening. But Liem used it to his advantage and won again after 53 moves. By the third game, Duda couldn’t create an advantage because of Liem's solid defensive style. This game ended up in a draw, with Liem winning 2-1 without needing the fourth game. This victory will be a motivational boost for Liem as he will play chess king Magnus Carlsen in the fourth round on Thursday night. Carlsen is one of only two players to win all games so far at the tournament, alongside Indian prodigy … [Read more...] about Vietnam chess ace takes down world champion
