A Vietnamese private investment group has told the Ministry of Transport it wants to buy Phu Quoc International Airport in the southern province of Kien Giang. Phu Quoc International Airport T&T Group has proposed to either buy the airport outright, with a guarantee not to sell it for five years, or acquire the operating rights to it, depending on the preference of the ministry. The airport, with investment of VND3trn (USD142.85 million), started operations in December 2012. It has an annual capacity of 2.6m passengers. Phu Quoc Island is seen as a big eco-tourism centre in the Southeast Asian region. It is home to a national park and a marine reserve. The island has attracted many big investment projects. Located 80 kilometers away from mountain resort town of Sa Pa, the domestic airport will have nine aircraft parking slots, and will be used for both civilian and military purposes. Its single runway will be able to receive aircraft similar to the narrow-body Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-700. A six-lane road will be built to the 371 hectare airport with the existing Hanoi – Lao Cai Expressway. Authorities in the northern highlands province of Lao Cai, where Sa Pa Town is located, had said that they would need VND3.09 trillion ($133 million) from the state to build the airport. The central government’s proposed contribution would amount to 52 percent of the airport’s total investment, which is estimated at VND5.9 trillion ($254 million). Police in Phu Quoc Island off the southern Vietnamese province of Kien Giang have arrested a man for allegedly raping a nine-year-old lottery ticket seller before robbing her last month. The provincial Department of Police confirmed on Tuesday they had apprehended Nguyen Van Hai, 37, as he was hiding in a tenanted house in Cua Can Commune, Phu Quoc. At the police station, Hai admitted to having raped T., a nine-year-old girl who earns a living by selling lottery tickets on the island, and robbed the victim of VND1 million (US$43) last month Local residents spotted T. crying on a street in Phu Quoc, wearing blood-stained clothes at around 10:00 pm on October 29. She was brought to a local hospital, where doctors discovered that her genitals were damaged and bleeding, so they treated the young girl.
