Five essential Vietnamese hip hop tracks to bump during social distancing

April 2, 2020 by vietnamnet.vn

We all have plenty of time on our hands to explore new things, so why not dive into the rich world of Vietnamese hip hop?

With social distancing in full swing in Việt Nam amid the coronavirus pandemic, we all have plenty of time on our hands to explore new things, so why not dive into the rich world of Vietnamese hip hop?

From hugely commercially successful stars like Suboi to more underground MCs, Việt Nam has a rich hip hop scene, so we’ve put together a list of five tracks to introduce you to it.

So read on and turn up the volume and hopefully by the time social distancing ends and house parties return you’ll have some fire Vietnamese beats to play when it’s your turn with the aux cable.

Mấy Con Mèo – Datmaniac

Datmaniac is one for the hip hop purists and this song is pure fire.

The video was filmed in (appropriately as the title translates as ‘Some Cats’) a cat shelter in HCM City’s District 8, which at the time housed about 200 of the furry felines.

Famed for the speed of his rapping, this song has Datmaniac in something of a contemplative mood, rapping over a slow, chilled beat. No wonder it was a huge hit upon its release in 2017.

N-Sao? – Suboi

If you don’t know who Suboi is, which rock have you been living under?

The queen of Vietnamese hip hop has risen to become one of the country’s biggest celebrities, performed at a showcase run by the iconic South By Southwest in the US and even spat some bars for US President Barack Obama when he visited Việt Nam in 2016.

Born and raised in HCM City, the video for N-Sao? features the city’s vibrant streets at night, with lights and people everywhere as Suboi raps over a jerky beat, asking “Now I’m happy, so what?”

Itsabet – Kimmese featuring Andree Right Hand

If HCM City has Suboi repping it, Kimmese is holding it down for the capital.

Rapper, singer, songwriter and equally as comfortable in English as Vietnamese, Kimmese is nothing if not versatile.

The video for Itsabet features Kimmese and pals cruising around her native Hà Nội with a few scenes that will be familiar to anyone who’s lived in the city, including some kids loitering outside a Circle K.

Itsanewday – SMO

SMO has one of the most distinctive voices in the Vietnamese rap game and this video is certainly distinctive.

The video is split into three different tracks, but it’s the beginning that stands out as the young man from Buôn Ma Thuột City in Đắk Lắk Province hangs out with and rides one of the elephants native to his home province.

Đỉnh Núi Tuyết Của Nuối Tiếc – Datmaniac

We’re unapologetically going back to the well with Datmaniac.

The man can do no wrong, and this 2019 track has him in full form, showing his technical ability and skill at crafting a rapid flow alongside his trademark introspection.

The music video Việt Nam ơi! Đánh Bay Covid (Dear Việt Nam, Let’s Win the War on Covid-19), a music project endorsed by the Ministry of Heath, was released today.

The song is another version of composer and singer Minh Beta’s Việt Nam Ơi! (Dear Việt Nam), a motivational song for the national football team.

The new lyrics call on Vietnamese people to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nguyễn Đình Anh, head of Emulation and Commendation Department under the ministry, said that Việt Nam ơi! Đánh Bay Covid “is one of the best motivational songs to call for citizens to be together with the health sector to win the war against the pandemic.”

The MV features Minh Beta, veteran actor Trung Dân, choreographers Quang Đăng and Khánh Thi, model Hà Anh and YouTubers Pom and Quỳnh Anh Shyn.

In the MV, the artists encourage people to wash their hands, wear face masks, and report about their health.

They also asked people to stop reporting fake news, stockpiling or hoarding goods, and gathering in public places.

The MV ends with images cut from top 20 videos from the video making contest “Hát Lên Việt Nam Ơi!” (Let’s Sing Together) launched by the Health Ministry.

Minh Beta worked with the non-governmental organisation Hear-Us-Now to provide sign language on the MV.

Minh said: “We hope the MV transfers its message of solidarity to individuals in Việt Nam, and sends our appreciation and gratitude to doctors, soldiers, police, journalists and scientists.”

He added: “When your motherland calls upon you, all you can do your best to stay where you are. Việt Nam never leaves anyone behind.”

Singer Hà Linh has released a music video entitled Thế Giới Cùng Chống Đại Dịch Corona (Unite to Fight Coronavirus Pandemic) in both Vietnamese and English.

The song was composed by amateur writers Doctor Mạnh Thắng and teacher Trần Phương.

“As an artist, I think I have a responsibility to do something for the community even if it is a small thing,” said Hà Linh. “I thought a lot about what I could do to help everyone in this difficult time. I’m not rich enough to donate billions of đồng, I can’t cure people and I don’t have time for charity work, so this was the answer.”

She said she has been moved to see health workers and volunteers working tirelessly at hospitals and quarantine centres.

Doctor Thắng wrote the lyrics to spread basic knowledge about how to prevent COVID-19 and convey the message to believe in a bright future.

Despite many challenges, the whole world’s coming together to find a cure for corona, according to the lyrics.

Teacher and musician Phương and Linh worked together about ten years ago.

Linh won the 2007 Sao Mai Singing Contest. She is known for her powerful vocal and in 2014 she released her first album entitled Hồi Sinh (Revival).

She was the only female singer to participate at the Asian Music Festival 2019 in China. At the end of 2019, she released her latest album Nàng Thơ (Muse), which is the first in Việt Nam to combine jazz with recital.— VNS

Vietnam to declare national coronavirus epidemic, stops public transport

March 31, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc asked citizens to stay home and limit travel.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on March 30 agreed to the Ministry of Health’s proposal on declaring Covid-19 a national epidemic given the fast and wide spread of the coronavirus in the country.

Accordingly, the PM required local authorities to suspend public transportation and limit private vehicles.

He asked people nationwide to stay at home, practice social distancing of at least two meters, and notably, to not to travel to other places in the context that people in big cities have been moving to the countryside for shelter against the pandemic.

State agencies and businesses are required to allow employees to work from home except for special units and manufacturing facilities.

The PM said this is a decisive time for the fight against the epidemic that requires all forces to participate in.

Further action

At the meeting, Phuc asked Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung to take charge of the supply of medical equipment, especially ventilators.

Meanwhile, he asked related ministries to ensure sufficient supply of essential goods and food without price hikes.

The PM said that the government will have a gathering on April 1 to discuss support to very low-income earners who face difficulties due to anti-pandemic measures.

He also agreed with the National Steering Committee on Covid-19 Prevention and Control to ask insurance companies to stop launching coronavirus-related insurance packages.

Earlier, at the PM’s order, Vietnam has closed non-essential services from March 28 until April 15.

In early February, Vietnam declared the national epidemic after the country found six infected cases, including one under human-to-human transmission.

According to media reports on March 8, the Hanoi city government asked for the Ministry of Health for a green light to declare Covid-19 an epidemic in the city after four coronavirus cases were confirmed, but no information has been announced.

As of March 30, Vietnam confirmed 203 people infected with SARS-CoV-2, including 55 cured. No death has been reported.

Hanoi eases social distancing on public transport since March 8

March 8, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Passengers on public transport are encouraged to install Bluezone applications and make medical declarations with QR codes in accordance with regulations.

Hanoi will ease social distancing on public transport since March 8, according to the municipal Department of Transport.

However, the department still requested to apply Covid-19 prevention measures on public transport in accordance with the guidance of the Ministry of Health and strictly implement regulations to curb the pandemic spreading in transport activities.

Transport companies, vehicle owners/operators must require drivers, service staff and passengers to properly wear face masks.

Hand sanitizer solution (with at least 60% of alcohol content) must be provided on vehicles which is also disinfected before and after the trip.

Passengers are encouraged to install Bluezone applications and make medical declarations with QR codes in accordance with regulations.

Hanoi had not detected any new Covid-19 infections for 20 consecutive days. In the coming days, the capital city will relax its social distancing measures to help resume normal activities, but will continuously control, inspect and strictly handle violations of pandemic preventive measures.

With the alert level lowered, Hanoi will allow the opening of several non-essential services on condition that preventive measures are ensured.

The city reopened schools from March 2 for students from kindergarten to high school levels, while colleges and centers for vocational training and education will also reopen since March 8.

The city continues to lay eyes on the prevention and control of the Covid-19 with a number of protective measures like wearing face masks at public places, and no mass gatherings.

The city’s mayor said that strict punishment remains effective to people failing to wear face masks in public places and those violating social distancing requirements.

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam expects to see women holding key leadership positions in 60 per cent of state management agencies and local administrations at all levels by 2025 and 75 per cent by 2030.

The target was set in the National Strategy on Gender Equality for the 2021-30 period recently adopted by the government.

The strategy also defined a number of new goals for the country to further make progress in gender equality in various areas and fulfil its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

The number of paid women employees in Việt Nam will increase to 50 per cent by 2025 and around 60 per cent by 2030, while the percentage of women working in the agriculture sector among all employed women will decline to below 30 per cent by 2025 and less than 25 per cent by 2030.

The rate of female directors or owners of businesses is expected to reach at least 27 per cent by 2025 and 30 per cent by 2030.

The country also aims to reduce the average time women spend doing unpaid housework by 1.7 times by 2025 and 1.4 times by 2030 compared to that of men.

By 2025, 80 per cent of women suffering from domestic and gender-based violence will be given access to at least one of basic support services, and the figure is expected to reach 90 per cent by 2030.

The sex ratio at birth will be 111 boys per 100 girls by 2025 and 109 boys per 100 girls by 2030. The maternal mortality rate will drop to 42 per 100,000 live births by 2025 and below 42 per 100,000 live births by 2030.

Gender and gender equality are planned to be integrated into curriculums at schools and pedagogical universities from 2025.

The country will hold a month-long campaign for the promotion of gender equality and gender-based violence prevention and response from November 15 to December 15 every year.

Campaign for “women’s smile” launched

The Vietnam Women’s Union, the Institute for Development & Community Health (LIGHT), and the UN Women in Việt Nam jointly organised a virtual programme to celebrate International Women’s Day (March 8) and launch the campaign “For Women’s Smile” in Hà Nội, central Thừa Thiên-Huế Province, and HCM City on Saturday.

The campaign aims to honour unyielding efforts of Vietnamese women to overcome difficulties and challenges, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic, to contribute to the nation’s development and prosperity.

With the companionship of scientists, artists and social activists, it hopes to encourage the aspirations to rise up, overcome difficulties, increase the desire to learn and the creativity of women.

The campaign also creates a space for women to expand the use of information technology, exchange information towards women’s happiness and promote gender equality.

Speaking at the event, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Women’s Union Hà Thị Nga said the International Women’s Day this year was marked in a special context when the COVID-19 pandemic still developed complicatedly, affecting the life of billions of people around the world. However, women as well as Vietnamese people have proved their solidarity, kindness and ability to adapt and willingness to cope with difficulties to “turn challenges into opportunities” in the fight against COVID-19.

Each member of the women’s union at all levels have promptly adapted to the new normal by increasing the application of information technology in managing and implementing the union’s activities, she said.

Application of information technology would not only help women not lag behind in terms of technology but also help to raise their spiritual and physical health, bringing in happiness, joyfulness and smile for themselves, she said.

“When we have confident, healthy and happy women, we will have more happy families. That is also the objective of this year’s campaign for women’s smile,” she said. — VNS

HCMC to stop auctions for bus advertisements

March 8, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

The proposal was made after the 3-year bus advertising contract with Japanese advertising agency Koa Sha Media ended this January.

Koa Sha Media was the only company that won the bid for a bus advertising package in 2017, allowing the company to advertise on the side of 492 buses for 3 years.

Since then, the transport department has made several changes to the advertising package for the auction, including allowing a flexible payback period and reducing the number of buses included in the package to attract small enterprises. However, all auctions were a complete failure, with not a single party bidding for the packages.

The failure is attributed to the fact that bus advertising is not as attractive as advertisements on social media and websites. It is also more expensive than other forms of advertising. Moreover, companies have to bid to be able to advertise their products on buses, which is a time consuming process.

The transport department has also said that the operations of buses have been unstable due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the city is in the process of replacing old buses and upgrading the public transport system. Thus, it has proposed to the municipal administration that the auctions for bus advertising be temporarily stopped pending a review on pricing the packages in accordance with demand.

HCMC currently has over 2,300 buses operating on 137 routes. If it is able to put ads on all its buses, it can earn over VND100 billion ($4.3 million) per year, it has been estimated previously.
