Announcement ceremony for Chu Dau Ceramic Village tourist attraction

January 2, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Chu Dau Ceramic is an ancient ceramic line in Vietnam, originating from as early as the 12th century.

Recognizing Chu Dau Ceramic Village as a top 5 tourism attraction in Nam Sach district of Hai Duong province, a ceremony was held on December 17 to announce Decision No.3009/QD-UBND and attach a signpost for the site in Thai Tan commune.

Chu Dau Ceramic is an ancient ceramic line in Vietnam, originating from as early as the 12th century but fully developing in the 14-15th centuries. With this long history, Chu Dau Ceramic plays an important role in the history of the country’s handicrafts and is currently being preserved and promoted by Chu Dau Ceramic JSC – a member of BRG Group.

According to many documents, the first female entrepreneur in Vietnamese history was Bui Thi Hy – the grandmother of Chu Dau Ceramic. From seeing her signature on a Hoa Lam ceramic pot displayed at the Topkapi Saray Museum in Istanbul, Turkey, it was established that the ancient Chu Dau Ceramic was discovered during the 1980s.

Recognizing the meaning and value of Chu Dau Ceramic, in 2001, Hanoi Trade JSC (Hapro), a member of BRG Group, decided to establish Chu Dau Ceramic JSC with the mission of restoring the lost ancient art as well as building Chu Dau into a high-class ceramic brand consumed at home and abroad, together with promoting the village as a traditional tourism site.

Along with current focus on restoring and making efforts to develop the ancient ceramic, Chu Dau Ceramic JSC has made significant contributions to the construction of the ceramic village. After nearly 20 years of development, the company has restored hundreds of ancient designs and achieved success in developing new and valuable ceramic products which satisfy customers.

Under the development orientation of BRG Group and the business network throughout the country, Chu Dau ceramic products including spiritual items, daily consumption items, and gifts are trusted and loved by Vietnamese consumers.

Along with Hapro’s strength in the import-export business across over 70 countries and territories, in addition to Chu Dau Ceramic pieces displayed and preserved in 46 famous museums in the likes of Tokyo and Istanbul, Chu Dau ceramic articles have been exported to more than 30 countries and territories worldwide. Besides that, the products are selected to be gifts for the leaders of foreign countries during important diplomatic events, which has contributed to bringing the Vietnamese culture to the world.

Further to the success and development of Chu Dau Ceramic under the leadership of BRG Group, on 9th September 2019, the company was honored with a world record for a dish with 1,000 versions of the Vietnamese word for “dragon” written in calligraphy style under ceramic glaze. The dish not only honors the talents of Chu Dau artists but also glorifies the Vietnamese ceramics profession which was found worthy of 10 golden words presented by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc: “Chu Dau Ceramic – Vietnamese national character, shining over five continents.”

In recent years, the Chu Dau showroom and workshop have become an attractive destination for tourists. As a result, the Hai Duong People’s Committee issued the decision to declare the village as among the most valuable tourism sites of the province.

Recently, Chu Dau village has attracted over 500 local laborers, with turnover estimated at VND400 billion annually. In addition, Chu Dau also has developed other trade and service sectors, making a positive contribution to restructuring the local economy.

Being recognized as a top tourism destination is great encouragement to Chu Dau Ceramic JSC, Hapro, and BRG Group in the restoring of the ancient Chu Dau ceramic style as well as the ceramic village itself. In addition, it also draws attraction from tourists as well as financiers wishing to invest in tourism activities in both Nam Sach district and Hai Duong province as a whole.

Lodgis Hospitality, the investment partnership between the leading global Private Equity Firm Warburg Pincus and Viet Nam’s leading investment manager, VinaCapital – is focused on Viet Nam’s tourism industry, with the strategic aim to support the development of Viet Nam as an international tourism destination by delivering a range of high-quality hospitality real estate developments and services.

Viet Nam – timeless charm

Viet Nam – a truly fascinating country, offers a 3,260 km coastline, connecting the North and South with white-sand beaches. Beyond its significant coast, the country boasts overlapping ranges of mountains, primeval forests, and world-famous caves. The destination is also known for its rich history, deep culture and arts, and unique street food cuisine.  More than its diverse natural landscape, Viet Nam also has vibrant cosmopolitan cities such as Ha Noi and HCM City, each with their own distinct ambience and rhythm. Ha Noi offers a traditional setting with heritage dating back 1,000 years. HCM City is a high energy urban and business centre with skyscrapers and a bustling streetscape. There are also the idyllic landscapes of the Vietnamese countryside and craft villages. These include bountiful fruit orchards across the Mekong Delta; narrow Hoi An streets adorned with bright red Bougainvillea trellises of ancient yellow houses; and the terraced paddy fields in Sapa.

Viet Nam and its timeless beauty

Viet Nam has become one of the top destinations in the Asia-Pacific region, attracting tourists from all over the world. The US-based Go Overseas website ranked Viet Nam 8th in its list of top 10 travel destinations for 2019, saying the nation is “filled with beauty at every turn”. As a home to eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, Viet Nam was also rated as one of the 10 most unique destinations in Southeast Asia in 2019 by The Quarterly Tourism Monitor, while Condé Nast Traveler ranked Viet Nam 9th out of 20 favourite destinations of 2020.

Factors that accelerate Vietnamese tourism into an economic juggernaut

Prior to 2020, global demand for travel and tourism was booming around the world, with growth of roughly 4 per cent per annum expected over the next decade (2019-2029). In addition, Viet Nam’s GDP growth, young population, and rapidly expanding middle class are factors driving tourism. According to World Bank statistics, between 2002 and 2018, GDP per capita in Viet Nam increased by 2.7 times, while real GDP grew by an estimated 7 per cent in 2019 – one of the fastest growth rates in the region. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Viet Nam’s GDP per capita ranks 5th in ASEAN, reaching US$5,212 by 2025.

Demographic change with a population of 96.2 million in 2019 is expected to increase to 120 million by 2050. Moreover, the proportion of the young population under 35 is around 55.5% according to the Census Report 2019; while Viet Nam’s new middle class is expected to reach 26% of total population by 2026. All these factors will drive robust demand for tourism. Domestic tourism has experienced an excellent surge – a four-fold increase in the number of domestic traveler-trips, from 20.5 million in 2008 to 80 million in 2018. Generally speaking, in the 2015-2019 period, the tourism industry had a significant growth rate of 22.7%. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2019 Tourism Competitiveness Index (WEF), Viet Nam ranked 32nd globally (out of 120 countries) in terms of quantity and attractiveness of natural resources and culture, and 3rd in Southeast Asia (after Indonesia and Thailand).

The direct contribution of tourism to GDP is also increasing. If in 2015, tourism contributed 6.3% to the national GDP, the rate in 2019 was 9.2%. Tourism is gradually aiming to become a key economic sector according to the Politburo’s Resolution 08-NQ / TW dated January 16, 2017.

Despite the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, Viet Nam’s tourism has remained relatively resilient thanks to strong local demand and the Vietnamese Government’s leadership and success in limiting the number of cases, contact tracing and social distancing. Once international travel resumes, Viet Nam’s tourism will grow further, creating significant economic opportunities for Southeast Asia travel destinations.

By 2030, tourism is set to become a key industry, making Viet Nam one of the top 30 most competitive countries in the world in terms of tourism with an average growth rate of 11-12%/year, contributing 15-17% to GDP.

Local lacquer to take on the world

Vietnamese lacquer painting, or sơn mài , has become a precious and unique artistic craft over the course of thousands of years.

Its global reputation is to be fostered now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has officially approved a project on building and publicising a national brand for Vietnamese lacquer art by 2030.

The project aims to boost its development and growth as well as present the land and people of Việt Nam to international friends via cultural exchange activities.

A report from the ministry’s Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition notes that the project has been in place since last year and has primarily focused on preparations for surveying and collecting opinions from experts, researchers and management officials.

KEY CRAFT: Villagers focus on the lacquer painting process in Hạ Thái Village in Hà Nội’s Thường Tin District. Photo thuongtin.hanoi.gov.vn

Department Director Vi Kiến Thành touched on lacquer painting’s long history in Việt Nam. Boasting unique artistic features, the traditional craft has the conditions needed to become a distinctive art genre of Việt Nam and contribute to boosting tourism and socio-economic development.

Under the project, relevant agencies and localities are to focus on developing logos and identifiers for Vietnamese lacquer paintings and on issuing standards relating to materials and creative style.

Investment in growing sơn (lacquer) trees in the northern province of Phú Thọ and the promotion of lacquer production in Hà Nội’s Hạ Thái Village will also be given focus.

A host of events will be held to promote the brand name of Vietnamese lacquer works, including international and national festivals, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, and tours introducing and exploring the traditional craft.

Books, documents, and videos on the art form will also be published to promote sales as souvenirs.

An international lacquer art festival will be held every two years to promote the local brand name in global markets.

Training in creating traditional lacquer artworks is also a major target of the project.

Other project elements include preservation and promotion based on the application of new techniques and experience from other countries in the region and the world.

The culture ministry is to provide funding for the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition to coordinate with relevant agencies, organisations and localities in implementing the project.

Two traditional lacquerware villages will be targeted for preservation and development: the Hạ Thái lacquer craft village in Hà Nội and the Tương Bình Hiệp lacquer painting village in the southern province of Bình Dương’s Thủ Dầu Một City.

Fine art schools, vocational schools, and training institutions must improve in quality and renew training programmes on lacquerware with a focus on professionalism, according to a decision of the ministry.

Training centres on lacquerware production need to integrate traditional skills with new techniques to foster Vietnamese lacquer artworks and introduce them both in Việt Nam and abroad, the decision states.

Storied history

More than 2,000 years ago, during the time of the Đông Sơn Culture, Vietnamese already knew how to process raw lacquer for use in everyday goods.

Lacquer, the sap coming from some species of trees growing in northern Việt Nam, was used primarily on furniture, boats, weapons, and objects of worship in the past. It later became popular in decorative works at palaces, temples and pagodas.

Increasingly, though, households began to be decorated with pictures coated in lacquer.

Lacquer works have also been found in ancient tombs discovered in Việt Nam’s north. As far back as the Lý Dynasty (11th century) or perhaps even earlier, lacquer was used widely in the ornamentation of palaces, communal halls, temples, pagodas, and shrines.

Dâu Pagoda in Bắc Ninh Province, which was built during the 2nd century, is among a few ancient places of worship to retain Buddha statues from different dynasties painted in gold – proving that lacquerware had been a profession in Việt Nam for some time.

Among the more fascinating examples are lacquer objects discovered in shipwrecks that belonged to the Nguyễn Lords in Việt Nam’s south, which remained intact despite being submerged in saltwater for more than a century.

The department’s research shows that lacquer paintings possess the highest level of artistry in the lacquer craft overall and evolved from traditional handicrafts in certain villages.

“While lacquerware tends to be a main fine art product in other countries, in Việt Nam lacquer paintings are considered unique,” painter Lê Thiết Cương once acknowledged in talking about the value of lacquer painting in the country.

The precise process of lacquerware production was always kept secret and handed down within clans of artisans, who were held in high regard by all.

With increasing sophistication being seen in the craft, the next logical step was to introduce specialisation, either in terms of production steps or the specific application of the lacquer.

In turn, such specialisation led to the foundation of guilds. One may have excelled in processing lacquer while another distinguished itself in gilding or in making vermilion powder.

Guild members lived and worked together, producing lacquerware in wards or along streets named after the craft. Today, in Hà Nội and some neighbouring areas, many streets and villages have preserved their traditional lacquerware production.

Lacquer is found in a range of Vietnamese art, not just in paintings but also in other arts and crafts.

One lacquer product requires artisans complete a set of processes, each with certain skills, in particular dexterity, perseverance and enthusiasm.

Only a few lacquer craft villages are home to highly skilled artisans today, including Hạ Thái in Duyên Thái Commune in Hà Nội’s Thường Tín District, Cát Đằng in Yên Tiến Commune in Nam Định Province’s Ý Yên District, and Tương Bình Hiệp in Bình Dương Province’s Thủ Dầu Một City.

Though Hạ Thái Village was not the first to become involved in lacquer painting, it has long been a centre of the art form in Việt Nam. Started by Vietnamese painters at the Indochina College of Fine Arts in the 1930s, it was introduced to people in the village and many artisans found fame in the craft.

Meanwhile, the lacquer products made in Cát Đằng Village were often hung in ancient tombs and imperial palaces in Hà Nội and the former imperial capital of Huế. Most of these products can now be found along the souvenir streets of Hàng Bông and Hàng Gai in the centre of Hà Nội.

Tương Bình Hiệp, meanwhile, is one of the oldest lacquerware villages in the country, with many products now considered national intangible heritages.

Lacquerware production is now in decline in the village, however, as few younger people wish to follow in the footsteps of their ancestors and preserve the craft, as earning a living from the occupation is anything but easy.

Many cultural preservationists and artists are indeed warning about the decline of lacquer artisans all around the country.

“The traditional lacquer art is in danger of dying out, primarily because there are too few artisans these days,” Cương said.

The painter explained that lacquer painting is quite a complex job and much time and effort is needed from craftsmen while raw materials are expensive.

“There have been fierce debates in the arts community over recent years about the tendency to alter some of the processing stages and use raw materials improperly when making traditional lacquerware,” he said.

Meanwhile, painter Bùi Hoài Mai is concerned about the limited supply of quality materials, mostly those from the lacquer trees growing in the country.

“There are not many areas growing lacquer trees anymore,” Mai lamented.

According to both painters, Thanh Sơn District in Phú Thọ is the only area in the country where good lacquer trees can grow.

“Autumn is the only time to harvest the best lacquer sap,” Cương said. “Many Chinese traders buy the best quality lacquer, with the remainder, of lesser quality, being bought by domestic artisans.”

In order to preserve traditional lacquer art, he said, raw material supplying areas must not only be preserved but expanded, with support provided to lacquer tree growers.  VNS

Buoyant steelmakers still hoping for more

March 2, 2021 by www.vir.com.vn

1533 p15 buoyant steelmakers still hoping for more

The results were contributed by recovered domestic consumption and steel export benefits. In the stock market, the shares of listed firms witnessed strong growth, such as Hoa Phat Group (HPG) up 114 per cent, Hoa Sen Group (HSG) up 193 per cent, and Nam Kim Steel (NKG) up 122 per cent at the end of the year (see chart).

For the galvanised steel industry, it was difficult for any business 6-8 months ago to imagine the price of hot rolled coil reaching $700 per tonne in 2020, especially when prices plunged just before then. Hoa Sen and Nam Kim reported strong growth in this area too, while Hoa Phat continues to firmly build a leading position in the construction steel segment with market share increasing to 32.5 per cent in 2020. The company achieved net revenues of nearly VND91.3 trillion in 2020 ($4 billion) and a record net profit of VND13.5 trillion ($587 million).

Vietnam-Italy Steel JSC (VIS) returned to profit after two years of heavy losses. Steel trading companies such as SMC Commercial Investment (SMC) and Tien Len Steel (TLH) simultaneously reported big profits in the last quarter of 2020 thanks to favourable changes in steel prices, thereby ending a year of success.

As the only company in the industry that owns a distribution network of hundreds of points across the country, Hoa Sen plans to expand its business product portfolio through the development of a home furniture and building materials retail chain with a strategic partner.

At its January annual general meeting, Hoa Sen chairman Le Phuoc Vu said that the group will no longer be a mere manufacturing enterprise, but move towards becoming a distributor of building materials and interior decoration items.

While it would continue to produce the same items, it would not expand production capacity but instead invest in opening new Hoa Sen home stores and upgrading existing ones. The group is expected to reach VND33 trillion ($1.43 billion) in revenues this year and post-tax profits of VND1.5 trillion ($65.2 million), 20 and 30 per cent higher than in 2020 respectively.

Nam Kim Steel meanwhile said it will focus more on distribution in the south, with plans to build a warehouse and steel pipe factory in the first quarter in the southern province of Binh Duong. Elsewhere, SMC Steel Ltd. wants to go deeper in the field of processing, becoming a supplier for manufacturers operating in Vietnam. Earlier this year, SMC together with Samsung C&T agreed to establish a steel processing joint venture with a planned factory located Ba Ria-Vung Tau province’s Phu My Industrial Park.

Vietnam’s steel industry sales volume is expected to increase by nearly 16 per cent in 2021, three times higher than originally forecast thanks to new demand including infrastructure funding and foreign investment inflows, which are also helping to promote civil engineering along infrastructure and foreign-invested projects.

According to a Mirae Asset Vietnam research report, it is estimated that output of the Dung Quat project will add 2.2 million tonnes of total output to the country’s steel industry, while the Pomina Phu My plant will increase construction steel output by 1.1 million tonnes.

The report noted that in 2021 the real estate industry “will gradually recover alongside the recovery of the global economy, which would benefit Vietnam’s steel industry. Output in 2021 is expected to reach 28.67 million tonnes, an additional 15.7 per cent on-year”.

More stable global supply is likely to lead to more intense competition in the market, and with the risk of COVID- 19 still present, the increases could also affect the overall recovery as well as production capacity and export markets.
