The game fervor has cooled. Launched in Vietnam on August 6, the mobile game Pokemon Go initially drew thousands of Vietnamese youngsters into a virtual world. Two months later, many say they're sick of the game. Use of the keyword "Pokemon Go" has declined sharply in the past month on Vietnamese social networks. The number of members joining game groups on Facebook has plateaued and many are now leaving their groups. “I’ve deleted the game and unliked the Pokemon Go Vietnam fanpage," said one user. "The more I play, the more bored I feel.” Central areas and public spaces have ceased drawing mobs of Vietnamese players staring at their phones or scurrying around to hunt for animated animals. “I go running around trying to catch Pokemons while others achieve the same results, at home, using cheating software,” said Hoang Tuan, a university student. In addition, a large number of users say they've satisified their curiosity about the game. … [Read more...] about Pokemon Go loses steam in Vietnam

As the popularity of lion dancing is declining, lion head producers in Ho Chi Minh City are finding it hard to survive. Imported into Vietnam by Chinese immigrants in the last century, lion dancing has long been a favorite pastime of southern Vietnamese children. In summer, during the Lunar New Year or Mid-Autumn Festival, children would dance happily with lion heads on sidewalks or in parks and playgrounds. For many years, a lion head was the best gift parents could buy for their child. A fading game Sadly, lion head producers say sales are low now as children prefer video games and high-tech toys to traditional lion dancing. Only five or six lion head shops now dot Luong Nhu Hoc Street in Ho Chi Minh City's Cho Lon area. A lion head shop owner there said the scene was very different ten years ago. Then, hundreds of lion head shops jostled for attention along Luong Nhu Hoc and Nguyen Trai streets, widely considered the center of lion head production in the … [Read more...] about Traditional dance losing steam
Rumors about a Taiwanese man wearing contact lenses being hospitalized with eye trauma after eating hot pot - the steam apparently melted the lenses - has prompted Vietnamese doctors to warn about the poor awareness of eye safety in the country. There are no confirmed cases of lenses melting or sticking to the eye, but doctors say wearers have to be vigilant near heat and fire. Dr. Le Thi Hai Chau, a member of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and the Asia-Pacific Prevention of Blindness Association, says people wearing refractive glasses, especially contact lenses, are always warned by doctors to stay away from fire and heat. "But people usually forget this," Saigon Tiep Thi quotes her as saying. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Ngan, an ophthalmologist at Vietnam Military Medical University, says there are two kinds of contact lenses, hard and soft, of which the latter, made of silicon hydrogel and easily deformed in high temperatures, including steam, is more popular in … [Read more...] about Do hot pots melt contact lenses?
Spain one of the pre-tournament title favourites ensured they made their first final for 24 years when they demolished Russia 3-0 here on Thursday in their Euro 2008 semi-final. Xavi, Daniel Guiza and David Silva scored the goals as Spain brought Russia quickly back down to earth following their surprise win over Holland in the quarter-finals to give them a chance of a second European crown after the one they won in 1964 - they also made the 1984 final where they lost to hosts France. Spain's Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas was a standout player creating two of the goals after coming on for leading scorer David Villa in the first-half, and said that the task was not over. "We came here to win the title, and the most difficult match is to come," said the 21-year-old. "It was kind of strange coming on that early and also as I am not a natural striker a strange position for me to take up. "Will I play in the final? Well he (Luis Aragones) is the boss and I will be there if … [Read more...] about Classy Spain too good as Russia run out of steam in Euro 2008
Spanish hopes of a mouth watering Champions League final between Real Madrid and Barcelona evaporated this week with both sides crashing out at the semi final stage but at least Real have the consolation of being on the verge of claiming their first la liga title since 2008. Jose Mourinho's side now prepare to face Sevilla after their elimination by Bayern Munich knowing that they need just six points more to win the league and so if they win and Barca lose against Rayo Vallecano they will be champions. It will be a tough task for Pep Guardiola to raise his Barca side after a couple of morale sapping games where they lost any realistic hope of winning the league with defeat in the El Clasico last weekend and then followed that up by defeat by Chelsea on Tuesday night. An impressive run had seen Barca reduce the gap at the top to four points and they knew that a victory at the Nou Camp over Real would really put the pressure on the leaders but instead their star players looked … [Read more...] about Real Madrid focus on La Liga after Euro heartache
