The vaccine is Vaxzevria for intramuscular injection, also known as Covid-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca Injection, an adenovirus-based vaccine with new coronavirus spike protein genetic material co-developed by the University of Oxford and Vaccitech, a U.K.-based biotechnology company.
Touching Noi Bai International Airport at 10 p.m. Wednesday on Nippon Airways flight NH897, all of them will be given to Ho Chi Minh City to vaccinate priority groups.
Presenting at the airport to receive the vaccine, Vietnam’s Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said Vietnam is the first Southeast Asian nation to receive vaccine support from Japan.
He said: “Vietnam is committed to using this batch of vaccine most effectively and quickly. Within Thursday, the vaccine will be transported to HCMC to inject local people and especially factory workers,” to enhance the pandemic prevention in the nation’s biggest city.
Ho Chi Minh City has been dealing with complicated pandemic developments with multiple clusters of unknown sources. The city recorded 99 local cases on Wednesday, its highest daily number since Covid-19 broke out in Vietnam.
Yamada Takio, Ambassador of Japan to Vietnam, emphasized that Japan wishes to cooperate with the international community, especially Vietnam to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic together.
“Try your best Vietnam, let’s beat the pandemic,” the ambassador said at the vaccine reception ceremony.
With the additional source of Covid-19 vaccine, Vietnam now has about four million doses.
By Thursday morning, the country’s mass Covid-19 vaccination campaign has inoculated around 1.77 million people since early March, mainly frontline workers of the Covid-19 fight. Of the vaccinated, 72,325 people have received two doses.
Vietnam aims to secure 150 million vaccine doses this year to cover 70 percent of its population.
