At the event, the Vietnamese PM congratulated Laos on the positive results in the country’s fight against COVID-19 and reopening, and highly valued the two countries’ sound cooperation in the bilateral framework as well as at regional and international forums. The Lao PM spoke highly of Vietnam’s important achievements in the recent time, especially in bringing the COVID-19 pandemic under control and promptly reopening its borders for socio-economic recovery and development, and thanked Vietnam for cooperation and support for Laos over the years. Vietnam and Indonesia share waters in the resource-rich and disputed South China Sea. Indonesia Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto said in his ongoing visit to Hanoi on May 12-14 that Vietnam and Indonesia are determined to continue strengthening defense ties that have been well established so far in terms of cooperation between navies, coast guards, and military industry. At the meeting, Son said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, who arrived in Washington D.C. the same day, will attend activities within the summit, slated for May 12-13. Vietnam will coordinate with other ASEAN countries to make contribution to the event, he said, stressing that maintaining ASEAN’s solidarity and unity, promoting its centrality,  as well as its stance, principles and common voice, maintaining the grouping’s equal approach in relations with partners, and enhancing substantive, effective and mutually beneficial cooperation should be further affirmed by the bloc.
