ASEAN defense senior officials meet in Phnom Penh

The high-ranking Vietnamese military delegation to the meeting was led by Deputy Defense Minister Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien. In his opening remarks, General Nem Sowath, Director of the General Department of Policy and Foreign Affairs under the Cambodian Ministry of National Defense emphasized the importance of this meeting in preparation for the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM). The Cambodian mentioned a draft joint statement to submit to the ADMM and discussions to enhance the defense cooperation among the ASEAN member states. At the event, heads of delegations heard reports on the outcomes of the ADSOM Working Group, the 16th annual meeting of the Network of ASEAN Defense and Security Institutions (NADI-16), the 19th ASEAN Chiefs of Defense Forces’ Meeting (ACDFM-19). Vietnam Museum of Military History receives artifacts

The event was attended by Defense Minister General Phan Van Giang, Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court of Vietnam Nguyen Hoa Binh, Deputy Chief of the General Department of Political Affairs (GDP) Lieutenant General Trinh Van Quyet, and delegates from agencies of the Ministry of National Defense and the GDP. At the handover ceremony, Chief Justice of the Supreme People's Court of Vietnam Nguyen Hoa Binh, on behalf of his families, handed over a pair of brass candlesticks related to the revolutionary career of his brother, Hero of the People’s Armed Forces martyr Nguyen Kim Vang. On January 26, 1972, Nguyen Kim Vang was ambushed by the enemy while carrying out a mission with his comrades and died near a revolutionary base in Lien Tri village, Binh Kien commune, Tuy Hoa town (present Tuy Hoa city), Phu Yen province. Defense leader meets with U.S. and U.N. officials

The Vietnamese general led a high-ranking Vietnamese military delegation to accompany Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh who was on his working trip to the U.S. to attend the ASEAN - U.S. Special Summit. On May 16, at the U.N. Headquarters, Sr. Lt. Gen. Pham Hoai Nam worked with General Birame Diop, military adviser and assistant secretary-general. At the meeting, the Vietnamese general thanked the U.N. for choosing and supporting Vietnam in deploying the Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 4 and the Engineering Company Rotation 1 to the U.N. peacekeeping missions in South Sudan (UNMISS) and Abyei (UNISFA). He hoped that the U.N. will continue backing Vietnam to deploy its military medical and engineering forces to suitable U.N. peacekeeping missions as well as to run for high positions at U.N. missions and headquarters. Deputy Defense Minister Hoang Xuan Chien meets Japanese counterpart

At the meeting, the two officials expressed their delight at the flourishing development of the Vietnam-Japan extensive strategic partnership and effective cooperation in different areas, including bilateral defense ties. They emphasized that over the past time, despite the COVID-19-caused impacts, the bilateral defense cooperation has been maintained and boosted, especially in exchange of delegations, military medicine, training, U.N. peacekeeping operations, and mutual support at multilateral forums. Both Vietnamese and Japanese deputy defense ministers consented to strengthen concrete and substantive defense cooperation with a focus on all-level delegation exchange, war legacy settlement through projects using the Japanese Government’s official development assistance (ODA) and non-refundable aid, and improvement of maritime law enforcement capacity. Former soldier’s museum of war artifacts

PANO – Over the past years, the small house of former soldier Bui Dinh Thu in Chi Tien commune, Thanh Ba district, Phu Tho province, with thousands of war objects relating to the resistance wars has been the venue for war veterans and locals, especially young people. Vietnam stresses importance of maritime and aviation security in East Sea

Hoang Xuan Chien made the comment while delivering a speech at the ASEAN Defense Senior Officials’ Meeting Plus (ADSOM ) in Phnom Penh on May 18. He stressed the need to comply with the Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and accelerate the early signing of a practical and effective Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC). Vietnam consistently pursues resolving disputes at sea by peaceful means, on the basis of international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), he affirmed.
