Vietnam protests China’s bomber deployment to Paracel islands

August 21, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Vietnamese foreign ministry said deploying weapons and fighter jets to the Paracels not only violates Vietnam’s sovereignty but also complicates the situation in the East Sea. Vietnam has voiced objection to China deploying one of its modern bombers to Hoang Sa (Paracel) islands, saying that the act has violated the former’s sovereignty and jeopardized stability in the South China Sea. Silence is not golden when it comes to sexual harassment

July 7, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

I have been reading a lot about sexual harassment in the workplace recently. I want to share how I deal with similar incidents at work so that people could stop becoming victims. I am a woman who has been working in a male-dominated field for over a decade. No unfortunate incident has happened to me, and this was not because I am surrounded by nice people but because I know exactly how I should act in such situations. The first thing I do when I am being harassed is to make my stance known to the other party directly and immediately. I do not fear losing my job by protecting myself. If push comes to shove and I end up being singled out at the workplace, so be it. So I always choose to stand my ground instead of compromising. It should be noted that I am not a rich person. But if I ever end up being in a situation where I am short of money, I am willing to do any work to put food on my table, even menial work. Secondly, I believe fear and weakness will only be fuel for an … [Read more...] about Silence is not golden when it comes to sexual harassment

Leniency for criminals willing to pay up? No, thanks

July 7, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

It was good question, asked in reaction to a recommendation by the nation's top prosecutor that people guilty of corruption be allowed lighter sentences in exchange for money and assets. But I didn't know how to answer that question right off the bat. I don't think that the proposal, which was put forward by Le Minh Tri, head of the Supreme People's Procuracy of Vietnam, at a conference to review last 10 years of the anti-corruption movement, can be boiled down to "right" or "wrong". Tri argued that the fight against corruption should be more about preventing it and less about punishing the crime ; and that those guilty of corruption and economic crimes can be given opportunities to fix their misdeeds. That would not only allow the state to recover its lost assets, but also be a humane gesture. There is some merit to this argument, I thought. After all, we haven't been able to seize back much of the lost assets in recent economic and corruption cases that have been prosecuted … [Read more...] about Leniency for criminals willing to pay up? Digesting fintech sandbox draft rules

July 7, 2022 by vir.com.vn

Steven Jacob - Of counsel, Indochine Counsel The draft decree broadly applies to two types of technology: that used by credit organisations that act as banks according to the Law on Credit Institutions; and independently developed tech in the banking sector from financial institutions. While the draft applies to technology, there is a further restriction on which companies can participate in the sandbox, namely credit institutions and fintech companies that receive authorisation from the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV). Fintech in banking consists of innovative creations and current financial services on tech apps. Related companies are organisations that are not credit institutions, branches of foreign banks with authorisation to act in Vietnam, those which independently provide fintech or information cooperation with credit institutions, and foreign banks that provide fintech to the market. If a company is an eligible company as defined, it must also demonstrate that they … [Read more...] about Digesting fintech sandbox draft rules
