Many UK businesses are looking into electric mobility industry in Viet Nam which is expected to grow by double digits in the next few years. — VNS Photo Mai Huong Many British investors are seeking investment opportunities in Viet Nam in the hope of cashing in on free trade agreements (FTAs) that Viet Nam has signed with the UK and other economies worldwide. The UK-Viet Nam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), which officially took effect in May 2021, was one of the first trade deals inked by the UK after it left the European Union by the end of 2020, which reflected the importance of Viet Nam in the UK’s trade policy. Climate change driving unprecedented forest fire loss
Forest fires supercharged by climate change are burning twice as much global tree cover as 20 years ago, according to a data Wednesday showing the equivalent of 16 football pitches are now lost every minute. The research showed in unprecedented detail how wildfires have progressed over the past two decades, with the blazes claiming an estimated three more million hectares each year -- an area the size of Belgium -- compared with 2001. The study showed that the majority of tree cover loss is occurring in the boreal forests that blanket much of Russia, Canada and Alaska, which are among the largest storers of carbon on Earth. Researchers from the University of Maryland used satellite imagery to map areas of tree cover lost, including that burned by what are known as stand-replacing forest fires. These are fires that kill all or most of the forest's canopy and which cause long-term changes to forest structure and soil chemistry. The data showed 2021 to be one of the worst years … [Read more...] about Climate change driving unprecedented forest fire loss
The art of motorbike repairs in Vietnam
Well you got caught with a flat? Well, how 'bout that Well babies, don't you panic By the light of the night, it'll all seem alright I'll get you a Satanic mechanic (Lyrics from the Rocky Horror Show) You hear that chunk and feel the dump and know you’re in trouble. Yes, it’s that wonderful time when you get a flat tire and need to find the repair shop pronto. Murphy’s Law (anything that can go wrong will go wrong!) applies here: 1) it nearly always happens when you are the furthest away from a repair shop; 2) it will happen when you are in a hurry to get somewhere; or 3) just when you’ve achieved that perfect mood to get through the day… (A note for English learners – ‘tire’ is used in America and Canada, however most of the rest of the world spells it ‘tyre’ – the rubber outside part of a wheel.) S.Korea continues refusing guest workers from Vietnam’s Thanh Hoa due to visa overstays
South Korean authorities continue to reject work visa applications from residents of two districts in Thanh Hoa Province, north-central Vietnam, due to rampant visa overstays, according to a statement made at a conference in Hanoi. Workers from Hoang Hoa and Dong Son Districts in Thanh Hoa Province will likely continue to have their South Korean work visas rejected, said Le Dinh Tung, deputy director of the provincial Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs at the conference on Vietnamese workers and experts working abroad held in the capital city on Tuesday. The event was jointly organized by the Central Economic Commission, the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, and the International Labor Organization (ILO) Office in Vietnam. As these districts are home to a number of workers who have continued living in South Korea despite their labor contracts having expired, South Korean authorities have suspended accepting workers from these locales until further … [Read more...] about S.Korea continues refusing guest workers from Vietnam’s Thanh Hoa due to visa overstays
Will the sorting of waste at source become a non-starter?
That worries me. Seven years ago, I got to spend nine months living and studying in Ghent, a small, beautiful ancient city in Belgium with many well-preserved medieval castles and churches. I rented a cheap room for students. On the first day, the landlord gave me a tour of the house, showed me how to use the heater and kitchen utensils. In the kitchen, there was a corner with two steel frames holding a blue plastic bag and a yellow plastic bag with "IVAGO" printed on them, as well as a cardboard box next to the bags. The landlord told us that our waste must be sorted thus: the yellow bag for daily household waste; the blue for plastic waste, aluminum cans and milk cartons; and the big box for cardboard, pizza boxes and glass bottles, especially beer bottles. Then, after posting a waste collection calendar on the kitchen wall, he asked us to check the dates then decide among ourselves who would take out the garbage on which day. The calendar was colored yellow, blue and … [Read more...] about Will the sorting of waste at source become a non-starter?
