‘Help, 40 days here’: Photos show migrants crammed into U.S. border facilities

July 3, 2019 by tuoitrenews.vn

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK — Government investigators warned of dangerous overcrowding at more migrant facilities on the southwest U.S. border, publishing photos on Tuesday of packed cells in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley where some children have no access to showers or hot meals.

A report issued by investigators for the Department of Homeland Security said supervisors raised concerns for the health and safety of detainees and agents, warning that the overcrowding represented a “ticking time bomb.”

The DHS watchdog issued the report after June visits to five U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency facilities in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) sector, the busiest area of the border for migrant arrests.

It came as President Donald Trump’s administration pushed back against criticism of its migrant detention centers on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Conditions at the centers have been a flashpoint since May when the watchdog warned of similar conditions at facilities in the El Paso, Texas sector, west of the Rio Grande Valley, with migrants held for weeks instead of days, and adults kept in cells with standing room only.

Security incidents among men at RGV facilities included detainees clogging toilets in order to be released from cells, migrants refusing to return to cells, and special operations teams brought in to show that Border Patrol was prepared to use force, the report on Tuesday said.

Migrants banged on cell windows and shouted when investigators visited. Most single adults had not had a shower despite several being held as long as a month. One photo showed a man in a cell with 88 men, that was built to hold 41, holding a message reading: “Help 40 Day(s) Here.”

The watchdog’s report recommended CBP accelerate transfer of single adults to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency responsible for long-term migrant detention.

Border Patrol stations have been overwhelmed after migrant apprehensions hit a 13-year high in May during a surge in Central American families.

Migrant flows have since dropped after Mexico deployed thousands of militarized police as part of a deal with the United States to avoid U.S. tariffs on Mexican goods.

Border-wide apprehensions fell 30% to 100,037 in June from 144,278 in May, including people who appeared at border crossings and were deemed inadmissible, the Mexican government said on Tuesday, citing U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.

Drink out of toilets

Members of a congressional group visiting facilities in El Paso on Monday said migrants were being kept in deplorable conditions.

The delegation had been told to surrender its phones ahead of the tour, but Democratic U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro smuggled a device into a Border Patrol station and took video of women in a cramped cell.

Some said they had been held for 50 days, some separated from children, denied showers for up to 15 days and in some cases, medication, Castro tweeted.

According to Democratic U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, women were told to drink out of a toilet.

“I don’t know what Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is talking about,” White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said in an interview with Fox Business Network, calling members of CBP “some of the bravest men and women on the planet.”

“They provided three meals a day to people who are here illegally and unlawfully, two snacks in between,” Gidley said.

Trump has made a crackdown on illegal immigration a centerpiece of his domestic policy agenda and 2020 re-election bid. But his efforts to build a wall on the southern border have been blocked in Congress, and he was forced last year to backtrack after his “zero tolerance” border policy of separating migrant children from their parents provoked widespread outrage.

A federal judge in Seattle on Tuesday blocked a Trump administration policy that would have kept thousands of asylum seekers in custody while they pursued their cases.

The American Civil Liberties Union, and other immigrant rights groups, sued the government to stop the policy of denying bond hearings to asylum seekers.

U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman ruled that people detained after entering the country to seek asylum were entitled to such hearings.

In New York, several hundred people gathered on Tuesday to demonstrate against the Trump administration’s treatment of migrants, part of a planned nationwide day of protests by rights groups targeting members of the U.S. Congress.

The demonstrations were fueled by fears the Trump administration is preparing a roundup of immigrants who are in the country illegally. Trump last month delayed the raids by two weeks.

Unique Tet trays showcase national delicacies made from clay

September 2, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

Trays featuring food from the country’s three regions and various offerings for the Lunar New Year festival, known locally as Tet, have been vividly created using clay by an artisan in Ho Chi Minh City.

Nguyen Tan Dat from District 3 in Ho Chi Minh City says he has spent more than a month completing collections of Tet trays.
Traditional Tet offerings from northern localities include Banh Chung (a sticky rice cake), thịt đông (pork jelly), dưa hành (pickled onions), giò nạc (boiled lean pork sausage), and boiled chicken.
Unlike northerners, people in the central region prefer displaying few items such as nem chua (fermented pork roll), boiled pork and tré (a combination of sliced boiled pig ears and beef, pepper, salt, minced garlic and powdered grilled rice) on the tray. However, a boiled chicken is more popular these days.
Thit kho (simmered pork) is a typical southern delicacy each Tet.
Like Banh Chung in the north, Banh Tet (cylindric glutinous rice cake) is a specialty in the south.
A tray featuring a variety of traditional food items is said to bring both prosperity and good fortune to a family in the New Year.
Xoi gac (steamed momordica glutinous rice) and Banh Chung are among the favourite dishes that can be enjoyed during special occasions, such as Tet.
Making these food items requires skills and a meticulous eye for detail.
Dat says that he hopes to preserve the country’s traditional culture for young generations through this clay collection.
The artisan also has other clay collections featuring different kinds of local noodles, such as Bun Mam (fermented fish noodle soup), Bun Cha (vermicelli noodles with grilled pork), and Hu Tieu Nam Vang (pork and prawn clear noodle soup).

Bayern Munich eye historic joy of six in Club World Cup final

February 10, 2021 by www.vir.com.vn

The German giants are bidding to become only the second club after Barcelona, who managed it in 2009, to win all six domestic and international titles available in a single season.

Having already claimed the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, German Super Cup, Bundesliga and German Cup titles in 2020, Bayern want to complete the set.

Bayern captain Manuel Neuer has made it clear the German giants are “up for it, we can make history,” sentiments echoed by head coach Hansi Flick.

“We came here to win the title. That would be the icing on the cake and also a special success in Bayern Munich’s successful club history,” said Flick ahead of the final in Al Rayyan, on the outskirts of Doha.

After brushing past African champions Al Ahly of Egypt with a 2-0 win in Monday’s semi-final, thanks to two Robert Lewandowski goals, only Tigres now block Bayern’s path.

The CONCACAF champions beat Brazilian giants Palmeiras 1-0 in Sunday’s other semi-final and are also hoping to make history of their own.

“No other Mexican team have gone this far, but now we want more,” said Tigres forward Carlos Gonzalez after veteran French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, 35, scored the winning goal against Palmeiras.

“We came here hoping to lift the trophy and now that we’re close, we’re encouraged and motivated that we can achieve our goal.”

Flick gave his Bayern stars Tuesday off to prepare for the final in which he expects a much tougher test against Tigres.

“They are a very dynamic team, very athletic with a lot of power. We have to counter that well,” he warned.

Bayern’s top scorer Lewandowski continues to send goal records tumbling having netted 29 times in 27 Bayern games this season, but he wants more.

“I hope we play even better football – it will be a big game, we are ready for it,” he said after his man-of-the-match performance on Monday.

Bayern are without midfielders Leon Goretkza and Javi Martinez, who had been due to fly to Qatar for the final, but remain in Munich under quarantine after testing positive for Covid-19.

“It’s important that they train in Munich and be ready for Monday,” Flick added, referring to Bayern’s next Bundesliga game against Arminia Bielefeld four days after the Club World Cup final.

Looking ahead to robust ties between Mexico and Vietnam

February 12, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Celebrating the 45th anniversary allows the two nations to reflect upon the past as it is a great opportunity to look ahead to the future of ties.

Mexico and Vietnam celebrated in 2020 the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. During this time, ties have continued to broaden and strengthen: both countries have enhanced their political dialogue, expanded their economic and trade links, promoted technical and cultural exchanges. As topics in the bilateral agenda have diversified, so have the coincidences on a wide array of topics in the global agenda.

Political dialogue between our relevant authorities is outstanding. A mechanism providing institutional framework, overall direction and purpose to the relationship was established in 2002 and meets regularly in Hanoi and in Mexico City. This dialogue extends to multilateral fora, such as the United Nations Security Council where both countries participate as non-permanent members in 2021, sharing their commitment to the rules-based multilateral system, as well as common interests and values, i.a.: the promotion of peace and security and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

In 1993 bilateral trade was US$10,700 whereas in 2019 it reached US$6.275 billion, according to the Mexican government’s data. The Comprehensive and Progressive Transpacific Partnership Agreement (CPTPP) in force since 2019 is the cornerstone of our economic ties. A joint committee to promote new trade, business and economic cooperation opportunities was established in 2016.

Cultural and educational exchanges have gradually increased over the years; Mexican artistic troupes have participated regularly at the Hue Festival; Mexican and Vietnamese artists and creators have had a chance to visit each other’s countries and present their work to audiences in both nations; literary works by Mexican authors have been translated from Spanish to Vietnamese language; and local students and graduates have benefitted from scholarships provided by Mexican institutions. People to people contacts play a very important role in our relations.

Celebrating the 45th anniversary allows us to reflect upon the past, as it is a great opportunity to look ahead to the future of ties between our nations. I believe there is still a great potential to build closer and deeper links. Sustained political dialogue underlies progress in all areas of our relations -more so during these trying times, setting the foundations for the next stage in the partnership. Continuous engagement between actors in both countries can lead to a valuable exchange of views, both at the bilateral and the multilateral levels, in those topics of mutual interest, including ways to overcome the challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic and to promote a much-needed economic recovery.

Mexico and Vietnam must continue their efforts to fully implement the CPTPP and to make businesspeople in both nations more familiar with this agreement in order to encourage new business opportunities and contribute to economic recovery. Thanks to this agreement, companies in Mexico and Vietnam can tap into preferential access to each other sizable markets. Furthermore, based on their strong manufacturing sectors and extensive networks of trade and investment agreements, they could integrate their value chains to introduce their products to other regions, including the US and European markets. I invite Vietnamese firms to consider investing in Mexico or establishing joint-ventures with Mexican partners in order to explore this possibility.

Further people-to-people contacts through cultural and educational exchanges will deepen mutual understanding. I am confident that both parties could use the existing legal framework, and conclude those instruments currently under negotiation, to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields, opening new opportunities for joint research and innovation projects.

Notwithstanding the bilateral relation is conducted at the central government level, there is scope for local governments in both countries to establish and maintain fruitful contacts with each other. This could result in focused cooperation actions on topics of mutual interest, taking advantage of best practices and expertise developed at the local level. Various authorities in Mexico are eager to explore possible partnerships with the City of Hanoi. The Embassy of Mexico looks forward to working the city’s leaders to enhance friendship and cooperation, enacting their great potential for the benefit of both our peoples.

On the occasion of the Lunar New Year (Tết), I wish Hanoians Chuc mung nam moi!
