(Photo: AFP/VNA) New Delhi (VNA) – Scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)’s National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune are training experts from Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand to tackle monkeypox amidst escalating concerns over the disease. As part of India’s response to protecting its population from the new threat, NIV scientists are training their counterparts in these countries on testing, clinical symptoms, case definitions, sample collection, and equipment required for testing. NIV Pune has been conducting such training programmes for other countries from time to time, like it did during the COVID-19 pandemic and even before for biosafety and bio-risk mitigation, said Dr Pragya Yadav, a senior scientist at NIV Pune. If these countries develop the capacity to diagnose and detect monkeypox cases, that would … [Read more...] about Indian scientists helps build capacity for Vietnam on monkeypox control

Medical facilities must not consider homosexuality as disease: Vietnam health ministry

August 9, 2022 by tuoitrenews.vn

The Ministry of Health recently requested local authorities to correct medical facilities that advertised the treatment of homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality. In a document sent to health departments of provinces and cities last week, the Ministry of Health said it had received information that some medical facilities and doctors claimed to be able to ‘cure homosexuality.’ The health ministry quoted the American Psychiatric Association and World Health Organization as affirming that homosexuality is not a disease, thus it cannot be cured, does not need to be cured, and cannot be changed. On May 17, 1990, WHO officially removed homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses. Homosexuality has been neither considered a disease nor included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) since 1994. WHO defines homosexuality as a sexual orientation in which people are attracted to other people of the same sex, stressing that it … [Read more...] about Medical facilities must not consider homosexuality as disease: Vietnam health ministry

Being gay is not a disease, Vietnam tells medical workers

August 10, 2022 by dtinews.vn

Being gay is not a disease, Vietnam has told its doctors, as it called on medical workers to end discrimination against the LGBT community. A couple pose for a photo ahead of a bike rally in Hanoi, Vietnam, in a September 24, 2017 file photo, to promote LGBTQ rights during the annual pride festival. Campaigners told AFP on Tuesday the statement was a major step forward for LGBT rights in the Southeast Asian nation, where gay, bisexual and transgender people have long felt marginalised. In an official document released last week, the health ministry said that "homosexuality cannot be 'cured', does not need 'to be cured' and cannot be changed". It urged medical professionals to be "respectful" of gender and sexual orientation after receiving reports of doctors claiming they could treat gender minorities. "Do not consider homosexuality, bisexuality or being transgender a disease," it said. Although Vietnam is seen as relatively progressive on LGBT issues … [Read more...] about Being gay is not a disease, Vietnam tells medical workers
