The $500 million Sai Gon Safari Park in Cu Chi District, 50 kilometers from the city center, was planned to span over 456 hectares as Vietnam's largest ecotourism park that can be on par with Southeast Asian destinations in terms of wildlife perservation. It said the HCMC People’s Committee did not follow legal procedures when appointing the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden Company the main investor for the project, and that the company was incompetent. It held members of the city's Department of Planning and Investment during the 2001 and 2006 terms mainly responsible. Inspectors found the city's administration in 2004 did not follow legal procedures when transfering the project land to the Saigon Zoo firm. Starting next year, the city will formulate plans on its own and call for investment later, the city's party leader Truong Quang Nghia said at a Tuesday meeting with almost 1,000 city residents. He said reviewing the city's general urban plans has been a key task undertaken by the municipal administration for the past two years. Based on advice from the two firms, Da Nang, considered the third major city in Vietnam after capital Hanoi and southern metropolis Ho Chi Minh City, will make development plans on its own. It will invite businesses to invest in projects that have already been designed instead of "letting investors tell the city to do this and that and the city revising its plans following their proposals as has been done before," said Nghia. They can't give their land to their children. We need a concrete solution from the city," resident Huynh Su said at a meeting with Da Nang’s Party chief Truong Quang Nghia on Tuesday. Nghia said the relocation had been stalled due to the lack of funding. But some investors have expressed interest in the project recently.
