The decision marks the first time that final duties were issued in a trade remedy case initiated by the U.S. government since 1985. The Trump administration has promised a more aggressive approach to trade enforcement by having the Commerce Department launch more anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties on behalf of private industry. “We will continue to do everything in our power under U.S. law to restrict the flow of dumped or subsidized goods into U.S. markets,” said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in a statement. Trump threatens to raise tariffs on Chinese goods to 25pc, up from 10pc
The United States may jack up the tariff rate on the next US$200 billion in Chinese imports it plans to target as it pressures Beijing to reform its trade practices, US officials said on Wednesday (Aug 1). President Donald Trump has asked the US Trade Representative to consider increasing the proposed tariffs on Chinese imports as part of a plan to pressure Beijing into reforming its trade practices. (AFP Photo) President Donald Trump asked the US Trade Representative to consider increasing the proposed tariffs to 25 per cent from the planned 10 per cent, USTR Robert Lighthizer said. "We have been very clear about the specific changes China should undertake. Regrettably, instead of changing its harmful behavior, China has illegally retaliated against US workers, farmers, ranchers and businesses," Lighthizer said in a statement. Officials however downplayed suggestions the move was intended to compensate for the recent decline in the value of the Chinese currency, which has … [Read more...] about Trump threatens to raise tariffs on Chinese goods to 25pc, up from 10pc
US slaps heavy duties on Chinese steel shipped from Vietnam
The U.S. Commerce Department on Monday slapped steep import duties on steel products from Vietnam that originated in China after a final finding they evaded U.S. anti-dumping and anti-subsidy orders. The decision marked a victory for U.S. steelmakers, who won anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties against Chinese steel in 2015 and 2016 only to see shipments flood in from elsewhere. The industry has argued that Chinese products are being diverted to other countries to circumvent the duties. U.S. customs authorities will collect anti-dumping duties of 199.76 percent and countervailing duties of 256.44 percent on imports of cold-rolled steel produced in Vietnam using Chinese-origin substrate, the Commerce Department said in a statement. Corrosion-resistant steel from Vietnam faces anti-dumping duties of 199.43 percent and anti-subsidy duties of 39.05 percent, it said. The department has said it would apply the same Chinese anti-dumping and anti-subsidy rates on corrosion-resistant and … [Read more...] about US slaps heavy duties on Chinese steel shipped from Vietnam

Photo by Reuters/Thomas White The efforts are part of Trump's intellectual property remedies, which include China-specific investment restrictions.
