During weekends, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m, many streets of the central town are crowded with groups of visitors. On average, Hoi An attracts more than 1,000 visitors over weekends, three times more than on normal days.

The surge in tourist numbers has been credited to the country’s good handling of its latest Covid-19 outbreak that began on Jan. 28. All 13 affected localities including hotspot Hai Duong Province have passed many days without new community transmissions.

Motorbikes and cars are banned from the town center for large parts of the day – from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., making bicycles the most ideal choice for town explorations.

Hoi An has pioneered pedestrian-friendly streets since 2004, with most hotels, restaurants and homestay facilities offering bike rental services.

Many visitors prefer the tranquility of biking through narrow alleys and past yellow houses decorated with old red-tiled roofs. Rental prices range from VND20,000 to VND40,000 ($0.87 – 1.73) a day.

Lan, the owner of a sweet shop on Bach Dang Street, said it has been a long time since she has served such a large number of weekend customers. In January and February, there were no customers, so she only opened her shop on weekends, though selling little.

“From March 8 till now, the number of customers has tripled, so I now keep my shop open every day to increase my income,” she said.

At night, a series of boats on Hoai River are lit by lanterns, attracting many tourists to enjoy Hoi An from the water.

“Every weekend I serve a few passengers and earn more than VND200,000 ($8.8),” said Hung, a boatman, who wished for more tourists to come to Hoi An in the coming time so the local tourism industry could thrive.

The Hoai River area has become more crowded, but by mainly domestic tourists.

The number of foreign visitors to Vietnam in the first quarter fell 98.7 percent year-on-year to 48,000 with travel restrictions in place to mitigate the impacts of Covid-19.

The government has closed its borders and canceled all international flights since March 25 last year except for special cases like f oreign experts and highly-skilled workers and repatriation purposes under stringent conditions.

Indonesia calls on D-8 to play a part in fighting COVID-19, pushing economic recovery

April 9, 2021 by en.vietnamplus.vn

Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian President Joko Widodo urged members of the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation (D-8), which comprises eight Muslim-majority countries, to play a major role in ending the COVID-19 pandemic and recovering the global economy, particularly through expanding vaccine production capacity.

The President also called for efforts to boost the equal distribution of COVID-19 vaccines as well as concerted efforts from the D-8 in rebuilding the global economy. In order to facilitate trade within the D-8, trade barriers must be minimised, he said.

Widodo emphasised the need to develop digital technology and artificial intelligence, saying that in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, D-8 member states should utilise these trends to keep up with robust changes in the world.

He stressed the importance of investing in the D-8’s young population, which totals around 323 million people, or 27.3 percent of the total population.

The D-8 is an organisation for development cooperation among Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey./.

Google, Microsoft to step up production in Vietnam amid Covid-19

February 28, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

‘Made in Vietnam’ Pixel phones and Surface laptops from Google and Microsoft are expected to start shipping in the first half of 2020.

Google and Microsoft are accelerating efforts to shift production of their new phones, personal computers and other devices from China to Vietnam amid the worsening Covid-19 epidemic, Nikkei Asian Review reported.

Source: Reuters.

Google is set to begin production of its latest low-cost smartphone — expected to be dubbed the Pixel 4A — with its partners in northern Vietnam as soon as April. The IT tech giant also plans to manufacture its next-generation flagship smartphone — the Pixel 5, as it is expected to be called — in the second half of 2020 in the country.

Google is the world’s No. 2 smart speaker maker after Amazon and its Pixel phone, though ranked No. 6 in the US market last year, grew more than 50% in shipments globally.

Microsoft, which began its foray into PC hardware in 2012, is scheduled to start producing its Surface line, including notebook and desktop computers, in northern Vietnam in the second quarter of this year at the earliest, another two sources familiar with the matter said.

“The volume in Vietnam would be small at the beginning, but the output will pick up and this is the direction that Microsoft wants,” a supply chain executive with direct knowledge of the matter told Nikkei.

Until now, most if not all Google smartphones and Microsoft-built computers have been made in China. The US-China trade war caused many industries — especially technology — to consider the risks of overreliance on China for manufacturing. The Covid-19 has only added to concerns about concentrating production too heavily in one place.

“The unexpected Covid-19 hit will definitely push electronics builders to further seek production capacity outside their most cost-effective production base of China,” a supply chain executive was quoted by Nikkei as saying. “No one could ignore risks after this. It’s more than just cost — it’s about continuity of supply chain management.”

Google even asked its suppliers to evaluate the feasibility and cost implications to uninstall some production equipment and ship it from China to Vietnam via land, sea or air transportation after virus fears left production facilities unable to immediately return to work in February, one of the sources briefed on the matter said.

Microsoft also kicked off its production plan in Vietnam earlier than planned in the wake of the spreading epidemic, sources said.

Google started its effort to move some production out of China last year. It asked one of its partners to convert an old Nokia factory in the northern Vietnamese province of Bac Ninh to handle the production of Pixel phones, Nikkei first reported.

Another factory in the northern Vietnamese province of Vinh Phuc also has been approved by the American company to make smartphones, the Nikkei has learned. Working with multiple partners, Google also moved its data center server production to Taiwan last year and started to manufacture other smaller smart home products such as its Nest Wifi internet router in Vietnam at the end of last year.

Japanese organisations and individuals honoured for supporting the Vietnamese community amid COVID-19 pandemic

April 8, 2021 by en.nhandan.org.vn

Speaking at the function Lam Thi Thanh Phuong, Envoy at the Vietnamese Embassy in Japan, conveyed her sincere thanks for the valuable support, both material and spiritual, of Japanese benefactors to the Vietnamese community in the country.

She reported the COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant difficulties for nearly 500,000 Vietnamese people in Japan, with many Vietnamese labourers having lost their jobs.

In this context, many kind-hearted Japanese individuals and organisations have provided prompt support to Vietnamese workers and students, helping them overcome many difficulties.

According to the Minori Murata, Head of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Association in Ibaraki Prefecture, the Vietnamese are one of the biggest foreign-born communities in the prefecture.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the association has provided aid for pandemic-hit Vietnamese workers and students in Ibaraki.
