The People’s Court of An Giang Province in southern Vietnam on Thursday sentenced four people to death and one to life in prision for trafficking 34kg of drugs from Cambodia. The death penalty was handed down to Nguyen Thi Bich Diem, Mai Vinh Hau, Huynh Van Tung, and Le Dang Huy. All four were convicted of the illegal transportation, trading, and possession of narcotics. The fifth defendant, Nguyen Do Thanh, received a life sentence in prison for the same offense. The indictment showed that on June 14, 2020, at around 2:30 pm, police in An Giang Province stopped six individuals traveling on two motorbikes who they believed might have entered Vietnam illegally. Ngo Quoc Hung was arrested by the police while he was recieving a fan box containing heroin cakes inside According to information from the Provincial Border Guard of Quang Tri, the functional forces detected a passenger coach traveling from Vientiane to Da Nang carrying fan boxes with suspicious signs. The Provincial Border Guard of Quang Tri decided to track and check the consignment above. U.N. Women, Japan launch project to reduce COVID-19 impacts on women and girls
The project aims to support about 5,000 poor and vulnerable women in nine provinces and cities, including Hanoi, Da Nang, Dien Bien, Ha Tinh, Ho Chi Minh City, Tien Giang, Nghe An, Thai Binh and Lao Cai. The priority targets are women at risk of violence, those with disabilities, migrant workers, ethnic minorities, people working in the informal sector and those living in disaster-prone areas. Apart from receiving the COVID-19 prevention kits, which include test kits, medical masks and anti-bacteria gel, the beneficiaries will also be equipped with the necessary skills to prevent and respond to COVID-19, disasters, gender-based violence and information about the available support services. Women survivors of gender-based violence at shelters and the Peace House will be supported in COVID-19 medical examinations and treatment. Evidence over the past year confirmed that the pandemic had a regressive effect on gender equality. As many as 5,000 poor and vulnerable women in Vietnam would benefit from a one-year project against the Covid-19 impact launched on August 2 by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the Government of Japan.
