Apple partner Pegatron mulls US$1-billion investment in hi-tech projects in Vietnam

September 20, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – These projects are expected to create 22,500 direct jobs and manufacture products that are supplied to Microsoft, Sony, Lenovo and Apple.

Taiwan-based Pegatron, manufacturing partner of the world’s major tech firms such as Microsoft, Apple or Sony, has plans to invest US$1 billion to build a manufacturing complex at Nam Dinh Vu industrial park in the northern city of Hai Phong, according to a report from the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI).

Taiwan-based Pegatron is set to invest US$1 billion to build a manufacturing plan in Vietnam.

Following the report, the investment would be channeled into three projects which are:

The first one is the Pegatron Vietnam 1 that will have an investment of US$19 million. The project already acquired investment license from the Management Board of Hai Phong economic zone on March 17.

For the Pegatron Vietnam 2 (US$481 million), the investor is currently applying for an investment license.

The Pegatron Vietnam 3 (US$500 million) is scheduled to be implemented in the 2026 – 2027 period.

Meanwhile, Pegatron is also planning to move its R&D center from China to Vietnam in an appropriate time which should be around the realization of the Pegatron Vietnam 3 in 2026 – 2027.

At present, the Taiwanese firm is submitting a proposal of the Pegatron Vietnam 2 to the Management Board of Hai Phong economic zone. Once completed, the plant would produce household appliances, computers, phones, electronic components, among others.

These projects are expected to create 22,500 direct jobs and contribute around VND100 billion (US$4.31 million) to the state budget per year.

With the move, Pegatron would join Apple’s two other iPhone assemblers — Wistron Corp. and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. — in developing manufacturing facilities or building extra capacity in Vietnam.

The report also revealed that the MPI is working with Universal Global Technology, a member of ASE Technology Holding (Taiwan, China), in investing in a manufacturing plant specialized in making circuit board for watches, smart phones, headphones for Lenovo and Samsung.

The total investment of the first phase of the project is estimated at US$200 million, and the amount could rise to US$400 million after three years in operation.

The MPI suggested these hi-tech projects would lay the foundation for Vietnam to further attract investors being suppliers of transnational tech giants and form an electronic production hub in Hai Phong.

Taiwanese companies have been particularly active in their search for options, with companies from Inventec Corp. to Foxconn Technology Group either moving production back home or to more distant regions around Asia, seeking to escape US tariffs.

Head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hanoi Richard Shi in a meeting with the MPI’s representatives on August 31 said a second wave of investment from Taiwanese investors to Vietnam is happening following the first one in the 1990s.

According to the social publishing platform Medium, hackers got access to nearly 4GB of source code of the delivery system Giao Hang Tiet Kiem and sold it online.

Speaking about the data they are selling, the hackers said they got it because there was a major flaw in the GHTK system. This flaw allowed them to view, edit and modify the codes of any projects. As the result, they downloaded all of the system’s data.

Medium said the flaw could be the result of mistakes in the DevOps practices of the system’s programmers and administrators. It could also be caused by the system’s password low level of security, which made it become untrustworthy.

A cybersecurity expert said the hackers could probably use the technique social engineering. This is a form of attack that targets the employees of GHTK, deceiving them to break into the system and steal data.

GHTK is a professional e-commerce delivery company in Vietnam founded in 2013. It specialises in providing convenient door-to-door delivery services for online shops and businesses.

With a wide range of operations with more than 1,000 branches nationwide, GHTK currently has more than 20,000 customers, serving millions of orders per month. The delivery company is also keeping a large amount of data including important information such as name, phone number, and address of users.

At present, there is no information on whether personal data of customers using GHTK’s services has been exploited. However, that scenario is highly possible, according to Medium.

GHTK is not the first company to suffer from data leakage and system source code issues. More than 50 companies, including Microsoft, Adobe, Lenovo, AMD, Qualcomm, MediaTek,… have also been victims of cybercrime organisations.

Vietnam becomes destination for technology giants

February 22, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

Foreign media and international institutions say that Vietnam is an attractive choice for manufacturers and investors who are seeking to diversify supply chains in Asia.

Vietnam becomes destination for technology giants

According to Nikkei, Intel has invested $475 million in its Intel Products Vietnam (IPV), the largest chip assembling and testing center in the world.

The additional investment was made in the second half of 2020. It aims to produce 5G products and Intel Core processors with Intel Hybrid technology, and the 10th Intel Core processor.

IPV’s CEO Kim Huat Ooi said IPV had manufactured more than 2 billion products to provide to clients all over the world as of the end of 2020. The figure showed the important role played by IPV in helping Intel satisfy customer requirements. This also explains why Intel continues to develop facilities and staff in Vietnam.

IPV is one of Intel’s 10 production facilities in the globe. The plant in the HCMC High-Tech Park (SHTP), with 2,700 workers, is an ATM (assembly, test and manufacturing) plant with the largest cleanroom in Intel’s system. Its export value has reached $50.2 billion in the last 10 years.

Export turnover reached a record high of $13.1 billion in 2020, which accounted for 68 percent of export turnover of SHTP.

Intel is the biggest hi-tech investor in Vietnam. The American company has poured $1 billion into Vietnam since 2006 and another $475 million in the last 17 months.

Vietnam is becoming an increasingly important link in the global technology supply chain with the presence of many manufacturers, from Samsung to Pegatron, in the country.

Foreign media and international institutions say that Vietnam is an attractive choice for manufacturers and investors who are seeking to diversify supply chains in Asia.

Nikkei reported that Apple is speeding up the diversification of production activities with two major destinations, namely Vietnam and India. The US technology giant will make iPads in Vietnam, slated for mid-2021.

It will also expand the production line of HomePod mini smart speakers. The product has been made in Vietnam since the day it hit the market last year. AirPod output is also expected to increase in 2021.

In late 2020, Foxconn, an Apple vendor, spent $270 million to build a plant in Vietnam. Luxshare Precision Industry, which assembles iPhone and AirPods, is also moving ahead with the plan to make HomePods in the north of Vietnam.

According to Savills Vietnam, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Pegatron has invested $19 million in Hai Phong for the first phase of its expansion plan in Vietnam.

When the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, some multinationals announced plans to relocate to Vietnam or scale up production in Vietnam. These included Sharp, Nintendo and Komatsu from Japan and Lenovo from Hong Kong.

Multi-billion dollar investment wave

In its report titled “Rising star: Vietnam’s role in Asia’s shifting supply chains”, EIU commented that Vietnam remains an attractive option for manufacturers and those who seek to diversify supply chains in Asia.

The 2020 Vietnam Real Estate Market Report also says foreign enterprises are stepping up investment relocation and Vietnam is one of the alternative destinations.

The Vietnamese industrial real estate market has favorable conditions to develop, including the stable growth of the economy, Vietnam’s membership in many FTAs, and investment incentives offered by the government.

CEO of JLL Vietnam Stephen Wyatt commented that Covid-19 is a catalyst accelerating the relocation process. He said Southeast Asia in general and Vietnam in particular will become more attractive in the future.

JETRO (Japan External Trade Origanization) affirmed that the shift will improve supply chain efficiency, fill the gap created by pandemic effects, and strengthen economic relations with ASEAN countries.

According to John Campbell from Savills, in order to attract investors, some factors need to be improved, including infrastructure, logistics and land prices. Land prices have been escalating in recent years as many foreign investors have been heading for Vietnam.

Samsung plans to shift Chinese PC production to Vietnam: Nikkei

August 4, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – The move is expected to help the South Korean tech giant stay competitive.

Samsung Electronics will end Chinese personal computer production as it looks to shift production to Vietnam to cut costs and remain competitive in the PC business, Nikkei Asian Review reported.

The move is expected to help the South Korean tech giant to stay competitive.

The plant in the city of Suzhou will close as soon as this month and convert part of the facility into a research and development center, while Samsung informed employees of the factory stoppage and job cuts at the end of July, Nikkei reported.

The South Korean tech group looks to shift production to an existing factory in Vietnam. A spokesman said the decision to shut the Chinese plant was based on the need to find a cost advantage.

Samsung Electronics Suzhou Computer, the unit that runs the Chinese plant, was established in 2002 as a PC assembly center. The computers made at the factory were sold mainly in South Korea, North America and China.

At its peak, Suzhou Computer employed 6,500 people, South Korean media say. The headcount has since shrunk to 1,700.

Global PC shipments inched up 0.6% last year to 261.23 million units, research firm Gartner said. China’s Lenovo Group holds the top share at 24.1%, while US rival HP ranks second at 22.2%.

Japanese makers have left the business as top players dominate the market. Samsung will continue to make PCs, but the company will cut labor and other costs by relocating production.

Samsung once operated three smartphone factories in China, but the group shut down all Chinese production at the end of 2019. The capacity has been transferred to Samsung’s Vietnamese facilities or delegated to contract manufacturers.

According to Samsung’s statistics, around 50% of Samsung’s smartphones and tablets are produced in Vietnam and exported to 128 countries and territories, including the US, Europe, Russia and Southeast Asia.

In the 2008 – 2018 period, Samsung increased its total investment in Vietnam from US$670 million to over US$17.3 billion, a 26-fold increase.

In early March, Samsung Vietnam started construction its largest R&D center in Southeast Asia in the west of Hanoi at a cost of US$220 million. The company expected Vietnam would not only be its largest production hub, but also a strategic base for R&D.
