Japan’s GDP expands in Q2 after Covid curbs lifted
The world's third-largest economy grew 0.5% quarter-on-quarter due to stronger consumption and capital investment. While the country never imposed strict stay-at-home orders during the pandemic, the government in March lifted virus restrictions primarily targeting business opening hours. Inbound tourism remains limited to group tours, however, and the economy is facing headwinds — from the energy price crisis to fears of a global recession fueled by biting inflation. From April to June, private consumption grew 1.1% compared with the 0.3% registered in the January-March quarter, according to the data released by the Cabinet Office. Capital spending expanded 1.4%, compared with a 0.3% contraction in the previous quarter. Tran Xuan Bach, a 11th grader at the HUS High School for Gifted Students, Vietnam National University, won a gold medal at the competition. The three silver medalists are all 12th grade students, including Duong Minh Khoi also from HUS High School for Gifted Students, Le Huu Nghia from Binh Long High School for Gifted Students in Binh Phuoc, and Truong Van Quoc Bao from Nghe An’s Phan Boi Chau High School for Gifted Students. FDI flows into Malaysia top 188 billion USD in Q2
Kuala Lumpur capital of Malaysia (Illustrative photo: themalaysianreserve) Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia recorded 836.2 billion RM (over 188.1 billion USD) in foreign direct investment (FDI) at the end of the second quarter, up 24.1 billion RM from Q1, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia. The manufacturing sector remained the largest recipient with a value of 360 billion RM or 43.1%, followed by financial activities 189.8 billion RM (22.7%) and wholesale and retail trade 53 billion RM (6.3%). Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the FDI sources were largely from Asia, which amounted to 431.1 billion RM or 51.6%, mainly from Singapore and Hong Kong (China), followed by Europe and the Americas. Northern Vietnamese provinces seek approval for construction of airports
Authorities in Lai Chau and Son La Provinces, northern Vietnam are seeking the prime minister's approval for the construction of airports there. In a document sent to PM Pham Minh Chinh, the Lai Chau People’s Committee mentioned its plan to build Lai Chau Airport, which is designed to cover 167 hectares and have the capacity of 500,000 passengers per year, in Tan Uyen Town during the 2022-30 period. The administration stressed that the project plays an important role in promoting the province's socio-economic development as well as contributes to ensuring national defense and security in border areas. The province has carried out necessary land use planning and site clearance to attract the interest of investors in the project.
