Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and authorities in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre organized a ceremony to mark the official export of the first batch of Vietnamese green-skinned pomelos to the U.S. on Monday morning. As planned, the first shipment includes two containers of green-skinned pomelos shipped by sea and two to three metric tons transported by air to the U.S. market. This is the seventh fruit of Vietnam allowed to be officially exported to this market, after mango, longan, lychee, dragon fruit, rambutan, and star apple. Vietnam obtained the license from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the export of fresh pomelos after nearly six years of negotiations. After over five years of negotiations, the U.S. Department of Agriculture officially licensed the import of the fruit earlier this year, making it the seventh fresh fruit of Vietnam permitted to enter the market, following mango, longan, lychee, dragon fruit, rambutan, and star apple. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and authorities of the southern province of Ben Tre held a ceremony to announce the export of the first pomelo lot to the US this morning, November 28. Six years after registering pomelo exports to the US, US and Vietnamese agencies finalised procedures, including phytosanitary issues. The US has officially agreed to accept the import of Vietnamese pomelos. Ben Tre has become the first locality to be allowed to export the fruit to the US. With the event, pomelo has become the seventh Vietnamese fruit allowed to enter the US market following dragon fruit, rambutans, lychees, longans, star apples and mangos. Vietnam is home to 105,400 hectares of pomelo with a total output of nearly 905,000 tonnes per year.
