At noon, when the temperature reaches 37oC, the solar panels on the roof of Hoang Long’s house in Nha Be district, HCMC run at full capacity. With 16 kWp solar power generated daily, Long’s household appliances such as electric fans, refrigerator and washing machine run well. Long installed a rooftop solar power system three months ago and found that the system allows him to save 30 percent of expenses on electricity. With an app on smartphone, he can watch the electricity output generated at different moments of the day and switch to using electricity from the national grid when necessary. According to the Electricity of Vietnam HCMC, there are 1,432 rooftop solar power systems with the total capacity of 17.46 MWp in the city. Households and administration centers in other provinces/cities such as Binh Phuoc, Ninh Thuan, Ha Tinh, Binh Thuan and Binh Dong have also begun using solar power in daily life and production. An increasing number of solar power plants are placing mounting pressure on Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) by developing power grids and connecting them with plants over a short period, officials said. 88 solar farms set to begin commercial operation in June Solar power: one dong in capital can bring four dong in profit Solar power projects mushroom in Vietnam Technicians install a solar power system on the roof of a solar power plant An EVN report revealed that solar power projects, which have so far added to the Power Development Master Plan VII, have a combined capacity of some 15,000 megawatt peak, thanks to the attractive power sale price. According to an April 2017 decision of the prime minister, State-owned utility EVN is required to purchase all output from solar power projects connected to the national grid at VND2,086, or 9.35 U.S. cents, per kilowatt hour, excluding value-added tax. With 88 solar and wind power plants going to join the national grid by June, Vietnam’s renewable energy industry is taking shape. Under the current policy, the renewable power plants providing electricity to the national grid prior to June 30 will be able to sell electricity at 9.35 cent per kwh for 20 years. As for the projects to join the market after that time, EVN will buy electricity from them at 6.67-7.09 cent per kwh. Power generators are racing against time to put their plants into operation before the historic moment. It is expected that 88 solar power plants will become operational in the time from April to the end of June. By the end of April 2019, Vietnam had only four solar power plants with the total capacity of 150 MW. Meanwhile, by May 26, the figures had risen to 34 and 2,200 MW. The other 54 projects will connect the national grid in the time to come, which means that 10 plants join the grid each week. It is expected that 88 solar power plants will become … [Read more...] about Who is leading in the renewable energy sector?
