The ceremony was attended by teachers and students from universities and schools in many northern provinces. A book fair for the Year of the Dog (Xuan Mau Tuat) 2018 was also kicked off following the ceremony. It will run through March 3, or the 16th of Lunar January. “Khai but”, literally translated as pen-opening, is practiced annually at the temple to promote the tradition “ton su trong dao” – piety to teacher, an important part of Vietnamese culture. Teacher Chu Van An was born in Thanh Liet commune, Thanh Tri district, Hanoi in 1292, during the reign of the Tran dynasty. In the early life, he passed the doctoral examination – “Thai hoc sinh” – but refused to become a mandarin. Instead, An opened a school and began his career as a Confucian teacher. His teaching played an important role in spreading Confucianism into a Buddhist Vietnam at the time. More efforts to help locals mitigate flooding consequences
Hundreds of households in Nhan Ly village, Nam Phuong Tien commune, Chuong My district, have been isolated. Nearly 1,413ha of rice, 250ha of other crops and 598ha of aquatic farming have been flooded. Meanwhile, many canals and dyke sections were also eroded. Accordingly, the Steering Committees for Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of the district asked Chuong My district Military Command to set up a rescue team at the People's Committee of Nam Phuong Tien commune to grasp weather situations and promptly mobilize military forces stationed in the locality to support flood victims. More troops were sent to the locality to evacuate residents from flood-prone areas and ensure food and safety for locals. Apartment projects mushrooming in Hanoi
While no new major roads have been opened in Hanoi over the last few years, apartment projects, collectively comprising several thousand apartments, have proliferated in the Vietnamese capital. Hundreds of new apartment projects and high-rise buildings, both on stream and under-construction, can be found along such streets as Belt Road No. 3, Le Van Luong, Hoang Minh Giam and Nguyen Trai in Ha Dong District. At the Trung Hoa-Nhan Chinh Urban Area, currently considered the capital’s fastest-growing construction development spot, new buildings are being constructed at lightning speed and with high density. This only puts more pressure on the already overloaded traffic system surrounding the area. Just because an area already houses numerous apartment buildings does not mean no more projects are planned there, at least as it seems in Hanoi. Several major condo complexes, including the 40-story Thang Long Number 1, 35-story Ecogreen City, 27-story Vinaconex 1, and Kim Van-Kim Lu … [Read more...] about Apartment projects mushrooming in Hanoi
Vietnam’s tech-based xe om industry scrambles for safety in wake of multiple tragedies
Two recent cases of xe om (motorbike taxi) drivers working for Grab in Vietnam being attacked, with one ending in murder, have sent a shockwave through the local ride-hailing community as drivers scramble to find ways to protect themselves on the job. When technology-based ride hailing was first introduced to Vietnam in 2014, drivers rarely gave a second thought to the idea of getting robbed or assaulted during a pick-up. Now, the industry is seeing the dark side of a massive boom – more drivers means more opportunities for criminals to take advantage of unsuspecting drivers, particularly during trips to secluded areas late at night. The October 19 murder of Le Nhat Hao, a student and GrabBike driver, was a wakeup call for local drivers: times are changing and caution can no longer be thrown to the wind. From all walks of life It was only recently that xe om driving made the leap from lower-class employment to side-hustle for university students, manual workers, … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s tech-based xe om industry scrambles for safety in wake of multiple tragedies
