Only in the USA (and Canada) does the word "football" conjure a rather violent sport involving an oblong ball and heavily padded hulks colliding with great purpose and force. That's football, American style - not to be confused with Latin America's futbol or European football. World Cup, which has engrossed perhaps a billion fans around the world. This includes millions of new American fans, in part because of valiant, close-but-no-cigar efforts of USA goalie Tim Howard. The second is baseball, "the great American pastime" that is growing in popularity around the world. Why? One night I caught "Million Dollar Arm," a film inspired by the true story of a contest in which baseball scouts tried to find and train the best throwing talent in India. (Two javelin throwers scored minor league contracts.) While following my favorite pro teams, the Dodgers and Angels, I also checked Facebook for updates on the Hanoi Capitals under-12 youth team, which (I'm told) exhibited great heart playing … [Read more...] about Which is beautiful? Talk Around Town (01-10-2006) Is it true love or just putting on a show? by Le Thu Ngan Apparently I've ascended to the age bracket that believes love is an expression held between the two people doing the actual loving - not a loud, expensive effort that is a show for the couple's peers. Two weeks have passed since love's labours let loose at the Ha Noi University of Technologies when a senior student named Quyet decided to bare all (and spend all) by buying enough roses to spell out "Dear Tr, Love you forever Tr, XXX" in red petals on the ground below his girlfriend's classroom. Seeing a young man so willing to put in the effort to make this type of private declaration has led the younger generation to fight back against attacks from elders that they are too material, and don't understand romance. In fact, entire blogs have been dedicated to the subject. "They scream, they shout everywhere. [The sound] may be strong enough to crumble the new library. Some professors left their … [Read more...] about Is it true love or just putting on a show?
Travellers Notes (28-03-2008) Strong euro, weak dollar decide tour preferences Many Vietnamese tourists are choosing to visit the US instead of Europe after the dong weakened against the euro but strengthened against the dollar. Tran Thuy Dung, deputy director of Carnival Travel agency, says though it is now the high tourist season in Europe, with a number of spring festivals taking place there, the number of clients booking tours to the continent has been low. Clients are carefully considering whether to travel to Europe since the prices are set in euro instead of the dollar. The European currency has strengthened from VND23,600 at the beginning of the year to VND24,800 recently. With the greenback falling well below VND16,000, US tours are becoming very popular. The HCM City-based Hoan My travel agency has stopped bookings for tours departing in April despite doubling capacity by operating four instead of two monthly tours. According to Hoan My, 85 per cent of people booking tours to … [Read more...] about Strong euro, weak dollar decide tour preferences

Working for Jiangsu since last July, he is now the “hottest man” since convincing club’s leaders to pay hundreds of millions of USD for stars from Europe, such as halfback Ramires from Chelsea, Alex Teixeira from Shakhtar Donetsk or striker Jo, a former player of Manchester City club. Photo: thethaovanhoa.vn “Binh Duong is the champion of V-league, had competed at AFC Champions League for years. So, it is a really strong rival for us. Neglect will kill us. Of course, Jiangsu’s target is a victory. However, Binh Duong is to play in the hosting stadium, thus creating a lot of pressure”, he said during a press briefing on February 22nd, in Binh Duong province. By adding … [Read more...] about Coach Dan Petrescu: Binh Duong club is a really strong rival
TuoiTreNews received this article from Dr. Kim Huynh, a lecturer and researcher at the Australian National University. The views and opinions expressed herein are those of Kim Huynh and Tran Hoang Tuan, a freelance writer and translator, and do not necessarily reflect the position of TuoiTreNews. Stan lived on the top floor of my apartment building in Vietnam and was, without a doubt, a very impressive individual. He was tall and fit, had lived in many countries and was a highly regarded doctor and manager. Stan had not come to Vietnam to make money; but rather, to help the Vietnamese, and was therefore in very high demand. While he was successful at work, Stan was often frustrated when he returned to his apartment. A putrid smell emanated from the drain in his bathtub, the air conditioner was constantly malfunctioning and he was never able to receive BBC World on his television. Most of us in the apartment complex encountered similar issues, but had long given up trying to do … [Read more...] about Who is more civilized: Vietnamese or Westerners?
