Appreciating efforts to attract more overseas capital
Charles Kaye - CEO, Warburg Pincus Last month, I had the opportunity to sit down with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in New York City after his visit with President Biden in Washington. After the prime minister explained his economic priorities, he asked me a simple question, one that I had not heard so succinctly put by a head of government before. What attributes do you look for in a country considering investing in? I improvised an answer at the time, but the framework of my response captured the critical ingredients we look for – an entrepreneurial spirit, stable macroeconomic conditions, solid infrastructure – both hard and soft, and government policymakers with a practical mindset and commitment to dialogue with business and investors. As Vietnam evolves to meet each of these challenges, it is poised for a significant transformation that will cement its reputation as an economic model for other nations in the region and around the world. First and foremost, we seek … [Read more...] about Appreciating efforts to attract more overseas capital
Attempting to balance green ideas with profit
Roongrote Rangsiyopash, president and CEO of SCG What is the current state of the circular economy in Vietnam, and the role of the private sector in accelerating it? I am so thrilled to see many developments here, and most importantly, it is encouraging to see the Vietnamese government’s commitment to sustainability. We all know that the development of physical infrastructure alone is no longer adequate, unless such development is combined with the advancement of human capital and commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. A path to a low-carbon society, combined with development in the circular economy, leads to sustainable prosperity. Vietnam’s sustainability targets and the passing of the Law on Environmental Protection in 2020 emphasised the importance of international collaboration. Scientific data has suggested a strong correlation between climate change, global warming, and an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, we are seeing the … [Read more...] about Attempting to balance green ideas with profit

Thanh Cong Textile Garment - Investment – Trading JSC in Tan Phu District is in need of more than 1,000 workers. The employees are to make up for those that have already submitted their resignation and to serve the company’s plan to expand 20 of its branches in various cities and provinces. Yet the company has had trouble recruiting new employees unwilling to work on assembly lines and deal with the pressure of meeting product quality and quantity. Nguyen Huu Tuan, the firm’s human resource manager, said the textile-garment sector is no longer attractive to laborers. He said "a significant number" of staff at the company has either quit or is about to, without revealing the specific figure. In most cases, those employees switch to work in other industries that can guarantee them higher salaries or move back to their hometown now that the living cost in the city has grown increasingly expensive. "With a monthly income of VND8-9 million ($340-385), workers would not be able … [Read more...] about HCMC short of textiles, footwear labor
