A good working environment goes a long way towards improving labour productivity, Photo: Le Toan After three working sessions, the National Salary Council, and representatives of employers and employees last week reached a decision to propose for the government approval of the region-based minimum wage hike applied at private companies by 5.3 per cent, equalling an average increase of VND175,000 ($7.74) per worker per month. This hike is a compromise between the 6.1 per cent proposed by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) representing employees, and the 5.1 per cent proposed by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) representing employers. The council’s chairman Doan Mau Diep stated that this 5.3-per-cent increase would help labourers cover their daily living expenses, even with a 4-per-cent rise in the consumer price index (CPI). Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL] said on Tuesday it fired 20 employees and was improving management training following an investigation by a law firm into sexual harassment allegations and other claims at the ride-hailing company. Uber fired the staff following a report by law firm Perkins Coie, which Uber hired to look into claims of harassment, discrimination, bullying and other employee concerns. The law firm has been working in parallel with a broader investigation by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder into company culture and practices. Perkins Coie investigated 215 staff complaints going back as far as 2012, Uber said, taking action in 58 cases and no action on 100 more. Other investigations are continuing. Binh Son Refinery (BSR), the operator of Vietnam’s only oil refinery, Dung Quat, was valued at VND72.88 trillion ($3.2 billion) at the end of 2015, with the State holding a 60 per cent stake, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade. An affiliate of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam), BSR is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) later this year. CEO Mr. Tran Ngoc Nguyen said BSR will sell 5-6 per cent of the company’s shares to the public in an IPO scheduled for November. The operator of the Dung Quat Oil Refinery will also allow its employees to buy a combined 0.07 per cent stake within the year and will look to attract strategic investors next year. An Gia Investment and Japan’s Creed Group Investment Fund completed the acquisition of seven blocks of the Lacasa project in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 7 from the Van Phat Hung Group (VPH) on March 12. In March 2015, An Gia bought two blocks of the Lacasa project to develop its Angia Riverside and Angia Skyline projects and then bought the remaining five blocks. This is the sixth merger and acquisition (M&A) deal An Gia has concluded in recent years. Vietnam’s real estate market has witnessed a flood of capable developers intensifying their M&A activities in order to secure projects with favorable locations. According to some experts, many property enterprises lack sales experience and have been unable to continue projects because they aimed at the wrong segment.
